Yeah, shut up and take subby's money...cause you're not getting mine.

/disappointed since FC2

Far Cry was a fun game.

I didn't play anything else that came after it.

Yeah, no.

Blood Dragon is amazing, and you're missing out if you previously wrote off the series.  I pirated it, beat it, and then immediately hopped on Steam and bought two copies: one for myself, and one to give away to a friend.  I was that impressed.

I really want to want this but the reviews people were giving after the leak make it a pass.  This seems like the kind of game that would be better suited to a corridor shooter than FC3's open world setup.

I am still playing through Alan Wake and Spec Ops: The Line. Afterward, I wish to finish The Walking Dead (the TellTale game), Just Cause 2, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky, Crysis, The Witcher, The Witcher II, Braid, Limbo, and Bastion. Additionally, the Leisure Suit Larry remake and Shadowrun Returns are both due out in the coming months.

Once I finish those, I will investigate Far Cry 3.

I like Far Cry 3 and they were right that it is like Skyrim with guns.  In that you can get so overpowered towards the end that you have to make up little challenges for yourself to keep from getting bored.  I'll probably pick this one up too, depending on how long it takes for the price to go down.

Nice list of old-ass games there!

I normally don't pay attention to reviews, but since so many people gave Hitman:Absolution bad reviews i decided to skip it, even though i had played and enjoyed all the previous ones. Then i picked it up on a steam sale a couple weeks ago, and was pleasantly surprised to see reviewers still have no idea what they're talking about. A lot of the things they said had no bearing whatsoever on the game itself. As if they were just making things up.

/will definitely be getting this

By my last count, I have around a 110 game backlog. I still put 4 hours into Far Cry 3 because it's a good game. I stopped playing it because I still have to get through my backlog.

So, is this game just "Far Cry 3 reskinned, leading to something that plays more like Crysis without the open-ended feel and the awesome graphics"?  That's what I saw in the time I spent watching video of it.

Far Cry 3 was a lot of fun.  My only complaint is how they dealt with boss fights.  Similar to how Deus Ex: Human Revolution did, the choices you made while developing your character throughout the game in no way impacted how you fought the big baddies.  I would have preferred they made them elaborate cut-scene instead of what they were.  The one's in Far Cry 3 were more like playing Dragon's Lair.

i've pretty much decided to wait to get the game of the year version (with all dlc) of whatever game i want on a steam super sale.

Far Cry 3 was better than 2 but farked it up with the bosses. The fights felt really weak.

Corridor Digital really outdid themselves on that one!

I'd move Bastion up the list. It's not a very long game, and it has probably the best ambiance/narrative structure I've seen in a long time.

Far Cry 3 was pretty open-ended gameplay-wise, and based on what I've seen in the gameplay trailers/demos and whatnot, I'd imagine that Blood Dragon would be similarly so, albeit in a smaller overall area.

2013-04-17 04:31:59 PM
Far Cry 3 was an overall okay with some great stealth action gameplay ruined by some of the worst writing and dialogue I've seen in a while.

The boss battle quick time events were pants-on-head stupid, and most of what the game did went against the Far Cry mantra of "your battle, your way."

The multiplayer was broken and unfinished.

I've also never witnessed such a large amount of "new users" and "provisional" accounts proclaiming how "great" the game was while flaming anyone who complained before.

I won't be buying this.

2013-04-17 04:42:08 PM
I thought Far Cry 3 was awesome. If Blood Dragon is under $20 I will buy it.

My list is not presented in any particular order. I have not yet decided the game(s) that will become a priority after my current two projects are completed.

I haven't played any Far Cry game.  I've no idea what they're all about, but I got 3 for free with my GPU along with a few other games and it just sits there on my drive.  Maybe I'll have to look at it sometime.

If you liked Alan Wake you should add Alan Wake: American Nightmare to your list.  A little repetitive and on the short side, but worth it for Mr. Scratch.

Electric_Banana: I like Far Cry 3 and they were right that it is like Skyrim with guns.

It's kind of funny hearing that, because I remember when Skyrim came out, some people were calling it Fallout With Swords.
Which was funny because when Fallout 3 came out, people were calling it Oblivion With Guns.

Valeriyance: Far Cry 3 was a lot of fun.  My only complaint is how they dealt with boss fights.

They need to just get rid of the phenomenon when you spend 2 hours sneaking around and disabling guards to be the ultimate sneaky bastard, and then when you get inside you walk brazenly into a trap and get knocked out with no control of your character. Also, for a game that lets you "go your own way", one of the plans your buddy comes up with late in the game (won't reveal here in the spoilers) is so obviously pants-on-head-retarded that going along with it feels disingenuous. Not to mention the "choice" in the end, where you have one choice that any human being on the planet would take and another that is apparently there just to see if you're a psychopath or not.

...but other than those things I thought it was a good game, and I enjoyed it.

Yep, loved FC3 until ...
[SPOILERS]
Vaas gets out of the picture after an epic QTE/Max Payne 1 moment and we get to face a poor man's Scarface for the rest of the game
[/SPOILERS]

Also, the stereotyping of the indigens was not racist but damn it if it didn't looked as stupid as a 20-year old serving at Starbucks with a tribal tattoo.
But the open world was great and was very well implemented. If only the same team had developed Fallout: NV instead of those morons at Obsidian...

Blood Dragon looks like a correctly implemented Duke Nukem Forever. Nothing to write home about but I'll give it a try.

/If you liked Vaas' character like I did, you should definitively check out Ubi's promo/viral around him: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBQSxTjPrHc

Problem with most game reviews is that reviewers tend to try and guess what gamers will.think of the game instead of using their own honest opinion. The game review blogs though, they just hate everything.

Yeah, the way that the two big bads die is just beyond stupid. "Here, take some LSD, do a QTE, then... yeah, it's over." If I see a room full of bad guys dead at the end of a game and have no idea how my character did it, you've failed. Vaas didn't deserve that.

/Rest of the game was amazing, though. Most fun I've had in an FPS in a long while.
//The promo videos are awesome purely to see how insanely close Vaas's voice actor looks and acts like him

They based the character on the actor, not the other way around. Vaas was meant to be a mindless brute but the actor's performance during the tryouts had them change their mind. He also did the motion capture.

Huh... in that case, companies should do it more often. He was one of the most fun FPS villains ever, which made the way he went out all the more disappointing.

This although the problem with Far Cry 3 is that this point occurs much, much earlier in the game.

Is it a bad thing that I didn't give a shiat about the video itself, but got all nostalgic at the near perfect Tangerine Dream-esque soundtrack?

The music in the video is all sampled from the game.  Check it out.

Oh, minor note, only three of the game's tracks were released freely on the artist's Soundcloud account.  It's too bad the rest of the tracks aren't all on YouTube, right now, as we speak, or anything.

Dear God THIS.  Vaas was awesome, right behind Handsome Jack for villain of the year.

Speaking of DLCs, anybody played The Knife of Dunwall?  Thinking of grabbing that.

They really should of cut the "Far Cry" out of the title, considering it's not based on Far Cry, plays nothing like Fry Cry and doesn't require Far Cry 3 to play. Seems to be confusing people.

Always up for something new, so I will be picking it up.

I must be the only one who doesn't like the kitsch. An "ironic" Duke Nuke'em is still just as obnoxious as an overboard Duke Nuke'em.

I see I'm not the only one with 100 farking games in my "unplayed" category on Steam.

/ Read nothing about Spec Ops, assuming it hasn't already been spoiled for you.
// Just Cause 2 may as well be played on a console; it's a lot of (very stupid) fun, though.
/// Bear with The Witcher--the early bits are kind of like the Temple of Trials section of Fallout 2, in that they suck but are not representative of how fun the rest of the game is.
/\ It's all kind of pointless anyway since Frog Fractions was both the highest purpose and the end of the very concept of "video games".  GOTY 2012, that one.

I agree with this entirely. Blood dragon just was not funny. Winking shiat is still shiat.

Far Cry 3 is a great game but everything related to the story including this dlcs story just doesn't work for me.

Surprised at the amount of butthurt gamer comments in here.

I thought it was refreshing to take such a turn with the content of the game. Beats having the so manieth "Dead Island" or whatever DLC.

I thoroughly enjoyed FC3, though real life is interfering with my plan to beat it a second time using no bullets (knife, explodies, bow). If my schedule opens up I'll happily drop $15 on this.

nerftaig: Far Cry 3 is a great game but everything related to the story including this dlcs story just doesn't work for me.

I thought most of the story was pretty great, with some glaring problems.  Vaas died too early for such an awesome villain.  I hope to see the actor get more work - he was outstanding.  There were some great bits of Hoyt but overall he couldn't fill the hole left by Vaas.  Also, the Rakyat story line veered so hard it felt like a different game entirely, and the ending was just a waste.  If they had another few hours of story to tell they could have made it work and turned the ending into this kind of "open your eyes and look at the hell you've created" kind of thing, but as it was the choice you are given makes no sense.

Because it is retro. All the cheese of an 80s action movie in a state of the art FPS.

Blood Dragon is unpretentious and fun.

Sand box should mean sandbox. Put Vaas on his island with a thousand guards and let the player decide when to ice him.

But yeah, FC3 was really good.

My only complaint is that FPS are getting away from the STALKER genre and into the cinematic arcade type of game.
