1) It happened in Boston
2) It happened during a marathon in Boston
3) This marathon is actually called the Boston Marathon
4) There were people involved
5) People were taken to hospitals

Is that right?

At the risk of sounding like I'm supporting the NY Post, this article is stupid and useless.  Late the party and brought a lousy gift.

The NY Post is one rung down on the Journalism Credibility pole from writing about video games.

That was stupid. They're just mad they reported about the Saudi man who was detained, then taken to a hospital and released from custody. He was just a dude in the wrong place at the wrong time.

If he was detained, its the first Saudi to be arrested in connection with a terrorist act on American soil...

Things NY Post readers got right about choosing a newspaper:

1. Nothing.
2. They are idiots.

Journalism is basically dead. People have realized that if you want hits and views, you have to cater to the lowest possible denominator.

I don't read the NY Post nor did I see any of its (wrong) headlines, but I did hear John King/Anderson Cooper/CNN give information from "sources" that Boston PD  was questioning a 20 yr old Saudi national who had been injured in the bombing, so it's not like the Post was the only one screwing up in this mess....doesn't excuse them by any stretch, but some of the focused fury could be a little more wide spread, me thinks

The Yahoo "top 100 stories" list today is deeply infected with links from the Daily Caller and The Blaze (Tucker Carlson's vanity blog and Glenn Beck's respectively)  and it's really interesting how desperately they are trying to flog certain aspects of this story like an interview with the ROOMATE of the Saudi national erroneously reported to be a suspect in the case.   Even though he was offically cleared by Boston PD 24 hours ago; in the Blaze's version there's no mention of that and he's still called "a suspect".  Or a whole bunch of links based on anonymous "insider" info about whether Obama hesitated to label the attack "terrorism" or whether he privately blamed the TEA party, etc.

Since this crap is mostly based on misinformation originally reported by Newscorp-owned  NY Post, it's very hard NOT to believe in a right-wing media conspiracy sometimes.

No, they're mad that the NY Post ran a story with absolutely zero journalism to back up their claims. Pretty sad how apathetic people can be about unethical reporting practices.

Hey, Forbes has been doing some amazing reporting on the video game industry this year. For examples see their coverage of the Sim City debacle.

Before the Post hatefest gets too out of hand, remember that pretty much all "news" for at least 48 hours after something like this is crap. It's all "sources" this and "officials" that.  Without resorting to anonymous sources and guesswork, every article from every outlet would have been, "Boston Marathon attacked by bombs. Some people injured. The end."

Why did other outlets have it right or at least way more accurate?

Hit enter too soon. That's all that there should have been for the first 24 hours, if that was all that could be sourced reliably.

2013-04-17 11:09:17 AM
I think they should start fining "news" outlets that spread false information as fact. If you print something using sketchy sources put a huge disclaimer stating the info is unconfirmed. If you blatantly lie... huge fines.

The Saudi thing was completely irresponsible and could have led to misguided vigilantism. I'm assuming they had to divert extra resources to the hospital that guy was at just to keep things from getting ugly. Also I'm sure they'll be a bunch of dumbasses who will blame the durned furreigners even if it's proven that it was domestic because of that crap.
A journalists job is to inform. These people aren't journalists... they are "entertainers".

I fail to see how calling out a purported news organization for not only posting a series of completely unverified "facts" about an important current event, but then sticking with them long after they have been proven objectively wrong, is "stupid".

Yet, somehow, the Post has managed to not only earn a reputation as spreading false information, but to live up to that same reputation with their coverage of the bombing. Amazing how the problem is with journalism in general and not the Post in particular even though most other outlets managed to do better.

Oh god... that is an absolute POS news org. Worse than Fox. They also have a ton of local papers around Canada of different names that spew their crap for them. Many are free and delivered to every damned home to spread their bullsh*t. You gotta be real careful what news source you are reading/watching if it's from Canada. Those SunMedia f*ckers are EVERYWHERE and they are in little Stevie's back pocket.

Good thing you are psychs who decided not to report anything amirtite?

2013-04-17 11:29:03 AM
Shortly after I heard about the story -- maybe an hour and a half after it happened -- I fired up BBC News and you know what? They had the death count at two. Two. Their injury count was also lower at that point.

You know it's bad when your go-to source for domestic journalism is foreign...

/Or maybe the BBC is just exceptionally good.

2013-04-17 11:30:05 AM
Even ignoring the false Saudi rumor, all other sources had 2 dead; the Post had 12 dead.  I guess the number is now 3 dead but the 2 number was right at the time; the 12 number was wildly wrong.

Diogenes: At the risk of sounding like I'm supporting the NY Post, this article is stupid and useless.  Late the party and brought a lousy gift.

Wel, considering they continued to claim that 12 were dead all day long, someone needed to point out the obvious. Nobody is holding news agencies accountable for spreading false information anymore.

2013-04-17 11:43:23 AM
The only thing they really had wrong - wildly wrong - was the number of casualties.  They never reported that a Saudi national had been arrested, only that a suspect, a Saudi national, was under investigation.  This was also reported by numerous other media outlets.  That statement was true, as proven by the subsequent statements from the PD that he had been questioned and released.  There was so much other wrong info reported by other media outlets (cell phones shut down, additional bombs found, to name just two examples) why the vitriol for the Post?  Because it's perceived as a right-wing new outlet?

It isn't?

For those who didn't RTFA, here's the list. Personally I got a major kick out of this...

The New York Post correctly reported that the Boston Marathon takes place in Boston, Massachusetts."Boston" is spelled correctly. The current governor of the state is Deval Patrick.Participants in the Boston Marathon are, in American English, colloquially referred to as "runners."Massachusetts General Hospital is a medical facility.I think #3 was the best...

2013-04-17 11:56:19 AM
I must say that, compared to the other news outlets reporting 5 minutes of news and 48 hours of speculation, maybe the Post has not sunk all that low, but rather, the other news outlets have descended almost to the abysmal depths explored the Post..

2013-04-17 12:09:17 PM
1. Saying they were wrong about the Saudi national being "in custody" is nitpicking: He was questioned and they did search his apartment and talk to his friends. The Post was the first news organization to have this and the ONLY one reporting on it early on.

2. 3 have died. The Post said 12. 1+2 = 3

2013-04-17 12:18:53 PM
The NY Post is the Daily Mail of America.
Just complete garbage.

2013-04-17 12:32:39 PM
All of my awful right-wing derper in-laws linked to the NY Post yesterday and kept screaming about the "damn mooslims."  It doesn't matter that we now know they were full of crap.  These assholes are going to point to that article as proof of a conspiracy from here on out.  Thanks, stupid NYP.  You went full retard and then passed out weapons on the short bus.
