Oh
My
God

Vancouver in an outdoor game! A dream come true.

Note that they'll have to do something to keep the ice frozen because we just don't get that cold here.

Ann Arbour? I like that, sounds French and classy and stuff.

Let's not cheapen the novelty or anything.

So this takes something special and expands it so that it is not special....if they keep this up ratings will be back to normal hockey levels within a few years spreading out the people who would watch the Winter Classic because, hey there is another one in two weeks between two other teams I don't care about, I can just catch that instead....

Way to kill the one day a year where everyone who likes sports paid attention to a hockey game, realtime

It's actually really easy to keep ice cold in warm weather. Just ensure that the inch or two of air above the ice is kept below freezing and there is sufficient refrigeration below the ice. This can easily be done with modern technology and indeed has been done before.

So, if you were wondering "this Winter Classic thing is awesome, I wonder how NHL management is going to fark it up?" . . . one less thing to worry about!

So far these are just reports nothing official.

I bet they add these games but keep the New Years Game as the only "Winter Classic" with the pomp and circumstance and the old timey unis.

Remember when interleague baseball games were something special because of the rarity and novelty of it? Fast forward to this year when interleague games are being played almost daily....and nobody gives a shiat anymore. Just another game on the schedule.

Congrats NHL. First you followed the NBAs business practices and almost killed the league. Now you're following MLB scheduling and killing interest in your product. Has Bettman had an original thought in his farking life?

2013-04-17 08:03:39 AM
I don't really get the appeal of one outdoor game a year.  The hockey is usually poor because the ice isn't in great shape and all of the sight lines are odd, but fine a once a year event.

I went to the alumni game in Philly.. it was fun for about 10 minutes, then you realise you're kinda cold and you're sitting really far away from the ice.

The 2011 Winter Classic had problems in 52 degree weather http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2011/01/02/AR2011 010200079.html

I'm sure the tech is there and given the right crew, there should be little to no issues but even in the best indoor conditions, the ice can get a little slushy when the outside temp rises above 70.

I'm very happy that we'll get Isles-Rangers, but I agree that this sounds like a bit much.

2013-04-17 08:30:58 AM
Eh, I may be the lone voice of approval, but I like this idea. It gives some of the less traditional teams and markets that wouldn't normally get a winter classic their own outside game. 6 games out of about 3000 (including playoffs) isn't that big of a deal to me.

I think this is what makes the game fun to watch.  The game can be formulaic, get the puck, dump it in the corner, beat the defenseman to the puck, and pass it back to the blue line for a shot. The less than perfect ice throws a wrench into the works that changes the dynamics of the game so unpredictable things happen.

Around these parts, there's a municipal arena that's outdoors.  They get decent ice when the weather is in the upper 40s, low 50s so there's a chance.

I fall into that category.
After doing some research, humidity and precipitation plays more of a factor than temperature.
Which is why playing outdoors with dry air and little chance of rain worked so well.

I've only played outdoor hockey or gone skating in the middle of winter, so I have else nothing to compare the experience to.
I'll also admit my opinions of ice conditions during the Winter Classics or any game I'm watching on TV for that matter, are probably more influenced by the announcers than my own eyes.

/I'll just shut up now.

Speaking on behalf of Rangers fans, I agree.  This is ridiculous.

March in Chicago could be 60 like it was much of last year or 25 like it was much of this year. Personally I'd like to see the disgusting mixture of freezing rain/snow/sleet that we get when the weather fluctuates between 29-34 degrees.

Because nobody would show up to an Islander or Devil game otherwise. Rangers are the NHLs cash cow, yet they dont hesitate to fark them in the ass, because they know they can take it.

The real farked up part is, the Rangers are the road team for both games. Yeah, the only team in the city, and they are 'away'

I'm sure this was Dolan's doing. This way, he get a cut of the money from the Yankee Stadium games, *and* gets to keep all 41 home games at MSG.

Islanders and Devils are as pleased as a pig in shiat, too. They stand to make more from the Yankee Stadium game than they would a real home game in their empty buildings.

Not to mention, i'm sure the players, trainers, and medical staff are just super pleased to have to play twice on shiatty ice in likely bad weather. Who cares about the teams health or on-ice success, right NHL? just keep milking that udder.

I understand WHY they want the matchup, but, I really wish they'd keep the games to regional rivalries. Same goes for Canucks/Senators. I am extremely curious to how they plan on pulling off the LA game, and 2 Rangers games is a pure and obvious money grab.

Really?  I was pretty disgruntled after the lockout, but the games this year have been very good, even if my team has pooped the bed.  The NHL can be frustrating, but once the puck drops it's been entertaining.  The playoffs look to be great too.

Hey, I'm all for adding more outdoor games, I think they're cool. But sweet Jesus, this east coast shiat is annoying. Rags get a pair in the same year, after having the last one in 2012? Pittsburgh getting their THIRD game?

Out of all the Winter Classic games, all of them except Detroit/Chicago were American Eastern Conference teams. C'mon NHL, you wanted to have 30 freakin teams in your league, so why don't you give some of the other ones some exposure? With the exception of the Kings/Ducks and the Canadian game, every single outdoor game on your schedule features a team that's already been in a Winter Classic.

Cycle some of these warm weather teams through the colder markets. It's just good business sense. And why the hell no Minnesota?

And just to biatch about Minnesota a little more...there's already a state "Hockey Day" in Minnesota every year. They play several High School games outdoors during the day. There's always a Wild game and a Gopher game at night staggered so you can tune into the local Fox Sports channel and watch hockey all day starting at like 9am (they televise the HS games). It would make ridiculous sense to give Minnesota an outdoor game on that day.

Its the constant squeezing our balls for money. 6 outdoor games. Ticket prices more than double over five years. removal of video goal highlights on nhl.com when the game is live (unless you are on a verizon partner device!), projected ads on the glass, exploring ads on jerseys, partner deals with stubhub... and all the while claiming poor and saying they have to pay the players less.

I had a lot more fun recently watching NCAA games with teams i cared nothing about.

2013-04-17 11:13:42 AM
Forget about the ice. The real point of an outdoor game should be having to exercise in -20 C weather. Having ice form around your nose, feeling the pain every time you take a deep breath. Your hands hurt like hell when you take a slap shot because their frozen. That's outdoor hockey.

2013-04-17 11:33:00 AM
What the fark?  Is the BCS running hockey now or something?

"Hey people like outdoor games, let's have even more!"

The issue they had in Pittsburgh wasn't the temperature but that it was raining relatively hard all day.

I agree with everyone else, that once a year was cool and a novelty.  Twice would be cool - one east coast and one west coast.  Playing more than that cheapens the entire thing.

And as a Pens fan, I don't understand why we're getting another one.  As with the media's saturation of Sidney Crosby, I can understand that the fans of other teams are sick of seeing the Pens get all of the "special" games.  If they kept the game a novelty, people will watch regardless of the teams.

Minnesota deserves one, how do you have so much passion for a sport and get screwed? oh yeah Gary Bettman is an asshat, that's how.
