Best actor of his generation?  Perhaps, it wouldn't take much to persuade me there.  Best actor they could have picked to play Tony Stark?  I can't think of another who could have pulled it off.

It's Robert Downey Jr.; he could kick me in the balls while fingerblasting my girlfriend, and I'd still think he's cool.

So who do you think could come close? With RDJ announcing that he's done playing Iron Man after this next film, I'm honestly wondering who could take his place. Those are some massive shoes to fill.

Charlie Sheen isn't fun when it's not about him. RDJ lets other people enjoy the limelight as long as he gets his time.

Wait till the bucks come rolling in and we'll see if he's done with iron man. Face it, he's the draw for two franchises.

It may not be modest, but it is the truth. (Although he did say "one of" not "the best.") Even when he was strung out and making movies between jail sentences, the man was a powerful actor. Now, he owns the screen like a boss.

See, I'm pretty sure that's bullshiat because he's also said he'll continue the role as long as he's in the shape to.. *goes googling*

"Let's just say that the only thing I ever let go of had claw marks in it," Downey, Jr. said in that typical Downey, Jr. way. "There's a little bit of soul reclamation going on. I feel that the first time I played Tony, I did it best. Sorry! The affinity with Tony now is: how do you sustain something? I'm not stupid, I like to play ball, I love the company, I love the character, and the business side of things, I'm not [too] picky about that either."

So... I guess as long as reviews stay good he sticks around?

In my opinion, kill the character off.  Don't try and replace him like they did with the Hulk or War Machine, just kill him off if you can't find someone to fill his shoes.  Stop trying to pussy foot around and pretend the next guy is going to be awesome if he isn't.  End him off camera if you must.  Surely they can pay him a million or so for some Audio and have some guy in an Iron Man costume get crushed by Thanos or some one.  I hate this, "let's just fill this void and pretend no one notices," crap.  I know the Avengers have a dozens of other characters that could be fun to play around with.  I am still looking forward to Antman.

Honestly, Iron Man is easily replaceable.

They have Rhodey, right? He was Iron Man while Tony was off being a drunk. Problem solved.

Or, Teen Tony.

Agree with Sean Penn. Leads to the question of which generation do these actors fit? Sean Penn b. 1960. RDJ b. 1965. Daniel Day Lewis (who has often been touted as the best since pick a great actor) b. 1957. Only an 8 year age difference between 3 of the finest actors working today, but are they in one generation or two?

Daniel Day Lewis is the best of that generation (only 7 years older than RDJ).  But, thats the only person I can think of.  Downey Jr. really is great.

He's certainly one of the most popular actors of his generation. But of the BEST? Meh.DiCaprio, Jude Law, Michael Fassbender are all more interesting actors,  just off the top of my head.

Never realized they were that relatively close in age. DDL looks just fine for a 55 year old, but...I don't know, maybe I just think of most other actors in category "X", and put DDL in his own.

Back in his younger days, William Smith could definitely pull it off in the looks department, but I doubt he has the acting chops of RJD.

If you don't think you are the best at what you do then what the hell ARE you trying to do? Be mediocre?

I regularly note that I consider myself to be on of the best elementary school teachers of my era, but work my butt off to be this good. What are you trying to be? Average?

Average describes waaaaay to many teachers in my opinion.

I don't think of RDJ as a great actor.. he'd fine for what he does, but the greatest of his generation?

Phillip Seymour Hoffman blows him away. You need to define the generation, but I'm sure there's a list of at least 5 that could be had.

There's a big difference between confidence and arrogance. Thinking you're the best is one thing. Bragging about it is another.

Also, why can't someone WANT to be better/the best but realize they're not there yet?

Daniel Day Lewis is a great actor, but he's not Tony Stark.

You can't just fill the role with a great actor. It has to be the right great actor.
