I'm gonna go out on a limb and say it's not really important for Dear Prudence to be that mindful of tweets during a crisis.  Heck, I'm not even aggravated by Rick Perry, it is what it is.  Jennifer Rubin's tweet, once you figure out what the hell she's referencing, just makes her look like a twat.  And that "don't respond to trolls" line near the end?  Someone should append that for Erik Rush: "Don't compound an idiotic statement by responding to people who tell you you're acting like a bigot, by calling them a turd."

Also, Rule #0 should be "Perhaps a moment of crisis deserves nuance and introspection that 140 characters will never provide."

Nope.  While I have been exposed to tweets, I've never signed up for Twitter.  Seems like where the illiterates go to comment on things.

They go everywhere.  And one social media site is enough.  My Facebook feed was full of teh stupid yesterday (more so than usual).

I've gone to twitter to look at the feed from one of my favorite XM/Sirius stations who tweets the title and artist of whatever they're playing...that's about it.

While I am quite positive that the majority of us will hold our mouths silent for the lost lives and tragic injuries yesterday at what is an obvious tragedy, we must not be surprised at a nation which holds the 1st amendment dear that some assholes are going to be assholes.

It is however also our sacred duty as patriots to do what is needed, and that is to call these people out for who they are.

Asking if you're the only farker who's never been to twitter is like asking if you're the only farker who still doesn't own/watch tv.

Yes, a forum where you are limited by 140 characters is going to be limitless with its profound ignorance, however, there are artists, and performers and people who do have a quality thing to say, or share, or invite you to and twitter is a quick way to put that kind of thing out. Since everything is instant message or nothing, twitter seems to have found a solid niche, until of course we find ways to communicate in less than three characters and demand that become the status quo because goddamn it, FASTER AND RIGHT NOW.

I am always amazed when people are surprised that someone says something asshole-ish about an event.  In a nation of 300 million where a huge number have a public outlet for their thoughts (facebook, twitter, the 2 people on Google+, fark, whatever), someone is going to be an asshole about anything.  It's not a Republican thing, it's not a Democrat thing, not a black thing, nor a white thing -- it's just people being people.

So call them on it and maybe next time they will think before tweeting.  But someone else won't.

I'm actually working on the next evolution of Twitter, which uses quantum mechanics to transfer information faster than light.  I call it "Qwitter."  However, three characters is a bit too big; each "qweet" will be limited to 0.1 bits, and each bit (ten total messages) will be sent out in aggregate and re-interpreted at the client.

So, learn to shorten your important messages even further, or you'll miss out on the faster-than-light Qweet revolution.

I like twitter. I don't use it because I find it annoying to get tweets all the time and I have nothing of value to contribute but I still like that it exists. Twitter has divorced the truly stupid from their legions of handlers and media spokespeople and let them broadcast their stupidity to the world unfiltered. It's given us an oppertunity to see exactly how worthless some of our celebrities and elected officials truly are. This is a good thing.

I've discovered the secret to Twitter is to ruthlessly maintain who you follow. I unfollow people, even friends, who post requests for retweets, anything about how many followers they have, or biatchy/whiney/mopey stuff. If there's shiat on your feed you don't like, why are you following that person?

Though honestly after something like yesterday social media just becomes worthless for a few days...

It's not required that every person shut down their whole world for a minor act of terrorism. I've got no problem with people who would prefer to go about their day. Also, I find it absolutely amazing and credibility-torching that this reporter has stated a BuzzFeed schmuck quoting the New York Post is "one of the smartest and most conscientious journalists on Twitter".

Lastly, Jennifer Rubin is a douche, and she should leave Sarah Kliff the hell alone.

I wish more people would remember this.

I was certainly concerned with what was going on over there. My parents were in the area. Once I found out they'd flown out an hour before the bombings and reached Chicago safely and that the bombing was a pretty small-scale thing, I went back to work. There was no use in waving my arms and crying and speculating as to what was going on.

All that being said, I will be shocked, SHOCKED to find out that this was a foreign operation.
I know its too early for speculation
But I'm looking at you, Tea Party Patriots.
I think the reason they are all screaming "Muslim Jihad" and "False Flag Attack" right now, is because even they feel it had to be one of their own.
Patriots Day. Tax Day. Liberal City.  Anniversary of Oklahoma City (Patriots Day, not the 19th of April)

I also feel like this was not a 1-man Lone Wolf operation.  There had to be lots and lots of planning and coordination. But who wants to take bets that this was a group of fine, upstanding citizens of the "True" America, who were simply pruning the Tree of Liberty, in their reptilian minds?

Of course I dont have real info. Of course I am just a douchebag on the internet with an opinion.

One of my first thoughts yesterday, immediately after "Tea Party Militia group" was why didn't this happen on 4/20?
In fact, is it just me or does a lot of bad shiat happen in April every year? School shootings, etc?

When it does, I can count on the left-wing echo chamber in Fark to immediately blame Republicans. It was truly pathetic last year as each new nutcase came though, Fark posted 1,000+ comments on how he'd turn out to be a right-winger, and then the crickets that followed the revelation that it was someone who self-identified and/or supported the political left. When one finally cropped up that could be "assigned" to the right, Farkers were having group orgasms.

Here's a hint, though: crazy. Crazy knows no race, creed, color, ethnicity, or political creed. Some assclown who shoots up a school after voting for Romney is no more a product of his political creed than one who voted for Obama. They're both just farked in the head and need better social services (specifically mental health care) than is currently provided. And no, the social services aren't Republicans "fault" either - look at your great urban liberal bastions and their mental health care sucks as much as anyone's.

Every other journalist out there will point to this article and nod their heads piously, maybe even commenting on social media how "we all need to do this next time, because JOURNALISM."

Next crisis actually happens, every single one of these useless talking heads will be fighting to blather the most unhelpful vitriolic partisan derpery from every angle as quickly as possibly, because JOURNALISM.

I would only call you half right.  Like I said, I'm just a douchebag with an opinion.
But that being said, how many Liberal terrorist groups are out there?  How many Liberal Death Squads have been sent out to rape and pillage the countryside in 3rd world countries?  Its not liberals out there blowing up buildings and sending bombs in the mail. Its not liberals who are shooting politicians and judges at political rallies and shooting strangers in a Holocaust Museum.  I'm so sick of false equivalencies that have no bearing in reality.  Terrorism is endemic of the right wing.

I also feel like this was not a 1-man Lone Wolf operation.

...

All this took was to build several bombs and dump them in trash cans.  No fancy watch synchronization (try explaining those scenes to your kids, assuming you get why they are doing it) no passing any real security, just dump items in bags into trash cans.  The only real issue is building the IED, something tragically easy to learn.

Not saying that someone might have wanted an even derpier patsy to dump the bombs, just that it is largely required only if you want to be hanged separately for the cost of destroying your operational security.

I'd expect it to have something to do with the gun issue.  The catch is that it would take some impressive  derp levels to somehow plan an act of terrorism to reduce the availability of extremely lethal guns without using that extreme lethality in their act of terrorism.  Probably not a gun grabber, but you can never tell with the batshait.
