orclover: that much smoke would indicate black powder (fark explosive expert brigade!), but it would take ALOT to produce that much carnage.  If you buy a canister or two of black powder, nobody cares, you are probably going hunting with your musket that weekend. If you buy 3 or 4 canisters, the gun store employees will raise their eyebrows, specially if you pay in cash, questions will be asked, notes taken.  Hit 2 or 3 stores like this and you will find out that gun stores talk to each other.  This is a hellova lot more than 3 or 4 cylinders.  If it was black powder, it was a shiatload.  Enough to fill a backpack or hell a trashcan, that flash is fricking huge.  Which would give credit to the theory that it wasnt black powder. Ammonium Nitrate however is not that hard to get ahold of in farm areas and not as secured as you would hope.  A tractor supply store near a buddy of mines ranch even leaves the shed they keep it in unlocked with a cat nearby, keys in ready to load.

For the ignorant among us, how much is a "canister" of gunpowder?  Is it the size of a Coke can?  Paint can?  Just curious.  It's remarkable to me what you can buy?

Yes.  I knew people who made their own shotgun shells and would buy gunpowder in bulk.

Same here, you can buy powder for reloads in 8lb units. Don't know why every one is going on a bout black powder, other than it's something you gan make at home. There are a lot of different materials you can buy, at least in the mid-west that you can make explosives out of.

luxup: I have a (probably naive) question but I have always been curious of the whole bomb signature thing.  They always look for one as it helps to locate who did it.

I always thought it was like pulling off a robbery and being dumb enough to leave your fingerprints everywhere.  So I wonder if bombers know about the whole signature thing which they of course must, why not try and put enough variety in your work to help make you that much more undetectable?

Or is it mostly a psychological thing where they think they are smarter than the legions of people they must realize will go after them?

Or can it just not be avoided due to the nature of the bomb making culture?

It has to do with "go with what you know."

Someone else put it well: If you attempt to build a bomb, and it doesn't end up blowing your own hands off, you're probably going to stick with that design.

That, along with essentially limited bomb building knowledge, certain "schools" tend to build their bombs one way, whereas people who get their info from internet how-tos build them a different way, etc.

It's like an amateur cooking a meal, the first time you make a sauce that doesn't taste bad, you're unlikely to attempt different variations.

Kentucky Fried Panda: OK, you may be a master troll, and I might have taken the bait. But here goes...
Yesterday was a message to Americans. The point of terrorism is to terrorize. As Americans, we were very loudly told "you are not safe. we can strike anywhere and at any time." As a part of this message, otherwise innocent people were destroyed. Could have been you, could have been me, could have been my kid, your kid, etc. See here is the deal. You have either lost something or simply never had it. Americans, like it or not, are one large dysfunctional family. Despite our reality TV-worthy behavior, we care about and protect our own. We can't drive to Boston, mend limbs and catch the bad guy. But, we can say we care. We can shout out to the darkness that evil will not win. Of course these are just words. But they mean something individually and collectively as well. I don't know who did this or why. But I echo the sentiment. Evil will not win.

sorry to have bothered.  i wasn't trolling.  and i guess i'm just not terrorized by the off chance i could die in a terror attack (and am more concerned that i will die in a traffic accident or from cancer).  now, i'm not being a tough guy.  hell, if i had been there yesterday i probably would have shiat myself and avoid crowds for long while.

so i'll go back to posting snarky theories of who did this.  currently after the man on the roof photos yesterday, which looked a little like sasquatch, i'm leaning towards the fact that all the pranks lead to the jack link's beef jerky sasquatch snapping.  this is what happens when messing with sasquatch goes wrong.  that or some amateur ass pissed off anti-us government types of the white or muslim (or both) variety.

I wonder how many people attempting to blame the "right wing" were trying to debunk the connection between a certain attack in Libya that happened on the same day that some people flew planes into office buildings years earlier....

That's funny, I was just going to ask why the same people who were losing their shiat over that event and demanding to know WHY Emperor Fartbongo hadn't called out the military to solve the case in minus 4,000 seconds all while instantly divulging all information regarding the perpetrators aren't banging the drum for the same thing right now.

Maybe because unlike then, they fear it could be one of their own....?

MmmmBacon: FullMetalPanda: What if it's the Syrian rebels, the Jihad faction?  Be interesting to see the US asking the Syrians permission to bomb the hell out of the rebels.  I'm going to assume Assad would be more than happy for the US to join the war.

That would not match the Narrative very well, so I highly doubt it will happen. Even if it were a group linked to the rebels in Syria, it "officially" won't be. "Officially", the most likely group this gets pinned on, in order of likelihood, from most likely to least likely (in my humble opinion):

Lone, angry white guy
Neo-Nazi Militia
Far Right-wing Extremist group
North Korean agents
Iranian agents
Jihadists

The reason I think they will blame this on a lone bomber is simple: There are a lot of people angry with the Government right now regarding potential gun control laws, and it would play well in the media to pin it some pro-gun "nutjob", especially if the FBI can't find the culprits. Not to go all Alex Jones on this, but I could see this being used much the same way 9/11 was exploited by the Bush Administration to try to justify the war on Iraq, especially if no group takes responsibility.

No offence but your lists shows that you know nothing about terrorism or foreign policy. Jihadists and Muslim extremist would rank much much higher than north korean agents!
In case you're not aware White House Down and Red Dawn are fictional movies and not a documentaries.

KJU has already threaten the US like 10000X times don't you think he would gladly take pride if this was his doing and announced to the world? Not to mention NK has NO history or terrorism in the US nor if this their MO. The likelihood or NK agents doing something 'small' like this is about the same odds as Danish eco terrorists doing it.

Shotgun shells would be packed with cellulose powder not traditional "black powder", its referred to as "smokeless" powder, guess why? ;)  You can buy both black and smokeless powder without restriction at gun stores.....but......everybody involved knows what they can both be used for.  Buying certain quantities can get you a HELLOVALOT of attention, fast, farking fast.  From what we see in the pictures, you would need to buy out several stores worth of black powder.  Somebody doing that wouldn't have made it out of the second store without finding themselves in a unmarked van with a light in their face and a lot of questions being asked.  Gun store owners are not morons, and they dont want the heat coming back to them.

Mostly, those working with that sort of thing go with what works.

Remember, their goal isn't to produce a kinetic work of art, it's to kill people and blow shiat up, without killing themselves in the process of building it.  So they find a method that works and is reasonably safe, and they stick with it.

SovietCanuckistan: JustGetItRight: fantasy vision of an American right wing nutjob.

There isn't much fantasy involved when you look at how the right foams at the mouth over everything.
The logic is: You say it enough, type it enough, get angry enough and if it's in the name of Dog, anything is possible.

There's a ton of fantasy involved when you look at the history of this type attack.  If those bombs had gone off at the FBI or ATF offices, an abortion clinic, or some gay rights then I'd be saying right wing actor too.  Again our groups (ALF, Army of God, ELF, BLA, Aryans) and individuals (Unibomber, McVeigh) of similar mindsets almost exclusively engage specific targets related to their particular passion.  In this case, both the target and the weapon both appear to be designed for maximum shock value.  There's really only one class of terrorist that universally embraces this approach.

Oh, and when it comes to frothing at the mouth Ed Schultz, Al Sharpton, Bill Maher, Keith Olbermann, and a whole lot more say hi.  The only meaningful difference between them and the Limbaughs and O'Reillys are that people actually watch Limbaugh and O'Reilly.

/After watching the press conferences this morning, I think they're on the trail of identifying the actors.

What would be the difference between civillian ammo and military ammo?

I'm sorry, I'm no gun expert.  I was working under the impression that military grade ammunition was a different breed of horse than civilian ammunition.

The Geneva Convention limits military ammunition in ways civilian ammunition is not.

But the basic answer is that there's no difference. There's cheap crap that will take your gun harder to clean and harder to stack rounds without jamming your weapon, and the US military tends to stay away from that.

You're first assessment is right of course HOWEVER I think you're giving the BPD a tad too much credit. I seriously doubt those traffic cop types were thinking that when they drew their weapons.

It was more instinctual than OMG! Ambush 101 thought me that the perp or perps will now revert to automatic weapons after the initial blast and disorietation therefore I must now scanned the crowd, analyze individuals, trained my weapon, give a 360 situational awareness and engaged tactically.

Somebody who the store owner has never seen before and doesn't appear to know the first thing about farming or own a farm? Kinda doubt that will go unchallenged. Maybe I'm wrong, I don't know. Also, that does complicate the device considerably as a blasting cap is necessary for ANFO, no?

First time my buddy went in there was two years ago, they had never met him nor heard of his family.  He paid and they just pointed their thumb tward the back and said 'help yerself', he paid cash.  Real eyebrow raising moment for him this being post 9/11.  Pretty rural though.

FLMountainMan: For the ignorant among us, how much is a "canister" of gunpowder?  Is it the size of a Coke can?  Paint can?  Just curious.  It's remarkable to me what you can buy?

Not alot actually.  On can of powder I acquired from a dear friend of mines storage shed after he died is about 24oz, i'll check the safe:  sorry 16oz.  Probably enough for a decent single pipe bomb.  You might be able to buy a couple of those without sweating it but any more and the owner better know you or god help you evading notice.  When I was a much younger and dumber youth I could buy a decent size cylinder, about 1 liter bottle size pretty cheap and canon fuse.   It was for my canon.
