Headline was partially inspired by a friend of my dad's whose fighter was shot down during the Korean War. He woke up in a wrecked plane on the ground, unsure of which side he'd landed on. He was relieved when he saw that a man running toward him through the smoke was black, since the NK's don't have too many citizens of African heritage. The man rescued him from the wreckage and got him the fark out of there.

CSB:
A superintendent I used to work with was heavily involved with rescuing pilots during the Korean war.  One time he got separated from his unit.  He had no map or compass and there was complete cloud cover and fog so he didn't even know which way was north.   He ran into Colombian marine that was also lost.  After a little while they ran face to face with two Chinese officers with one soldier with them.  They stared at each other and tried to talk, eventually finding the only common language between them was German.
"Do you know which way to the American lines?"
"No.  Do you know which way to the Chinese lines?"
"No."

After that, both groups solely started to back away from each other.  After 50' Bert and the Colombian marine turned around and started to run.  After another 50' the Marine asked, "Wait, shouldn't we shoot them?"  "You asshole, they're running away from us too!"

That's kinda the sad/scary thing.  Can you imagine the life expectancy of a pilot in a Mig-17/19 if this turned into a shooting war?

I mean, I can appreciate not having a fair fight (safer for our boys), but DAMN man.  At least in a Mig-21 there would be a pretense of them having a chance, but a farking Mig-17 or 19?

Blackhawk is a UH, not sure how you farked that up.  Besides, the navy won't buy decent aircraft for their marines, that's why they still fly the cobra, that's an AH, by the way.

Those old 50's era MIGs are long gone from NK. They use 70's era MIG-23's from China now.

A plane design obviously reverse-engineered from crashed F-4's (notice the design from nose to the air inlet) and that F-111 that went MIA over Nam.

I dont know if they are difficult or not, not a pilot, but we fly a whole motherfarking shiatload of them, so it makes sense that they would be the most often crashed.  Hell the navy has switched to the UH-60 because the platform is so versatile, that probably almost doubled the number of blackhawks in service.

Cant beat the old "shiat hook" though, for anything that a AH-6 isn't necessary for.

It did say "hard landing", if that means anything.   Also, this was probably part of the wargames we have going on over there, so they're probably trying some trickier things than normal.

1) We fly a lot of them.

2) They (helicopters) are not inherently stable.

I had an 8th grade social studies teacher who was a helicopter pilot in the reserves. One day in class he described what is happening with a helicopters rotors. It was both hilarious in presentation and terrifying in reality.

A good landing is one where you walk away.  A great landing is one where the aircraft flies again.

Not great, but good.

I've heard that while airplanes want to fly and often continue to do so after something happens to the pilot. Helicopters, however, don't want to fly and basically try not to fly.

They have some sort of mechanism to shut the whole thing down when that happens.

Helicopters are generally pretty bad at flying. Having a big rotor that tries to claw the machine through the air is a basically risky design. Add in brownout at low levels in dusty places (too much dust gets kicked up, can't see anything) and bad weather, and you can guarantee choppers are going to crash fairly often by comparison with aeroplanes.

This is all entirely before people start shooting at them. This is not to say helicopters aren't very, very useful, but if they go against an opponent with a decent airforce or even just SAM capabilities they'll last about as long as a snowball in lava.
