gadian: We have lists of sex offenders, realistically some of whom aren't really offenders, but not lists of HIV / AIDS patients because "privacy".  Could we at least start a list of "these idiots with HIV knew they had it and didn't bother to tell their partners"?

Negative. That is protected by HIPPA and you should be greatful, because otherwise we could air every little treatment and illness you ever had without repercussion. As despicable as what this guy did is, you cannot put out a list of people who have AIDS. It violates patient confidentiality.

Yeah, HIV is just like the flu. Bed-rest, plenty of vitamins and chicken noodle soup will clear it right up.

Don't forget that he is from Africa. The amount if misinformation on that continent about aids is staggering.

You mean raping virgin female children doesn't cure it!?!?!?

Neither does beetroot or beer but try telling that to the woman, who was the farking health minister,I linked to earlier.
/Then again talking to dead people is a sign you're in a shiatty Shymalamadingdong movie.

Snapper Carr: robohobo: UnspokenVoice: robohobo: Why no murder charges?

Are you... No... I'll be nice.

Because she's not dead.

But she's been handed a death sentence. The foulest, dirtiest disease possible, that will in fact kill her.  Might take awhile, but yeah, it's going to kill her. Through no bad behaviour of her own. So yeah, it's murder. Delayed murder, perhaps, but still murder.

Thanks to modern treatments, life expectancy for HIV (at least in the US) is roughly that of an uninfected person (about 70 years).

This isn't 1986 anymore.

If they can afford treatment. If not, they're maybe using tax dollars. Also they can't have sex. Well, they can, but they risk passing their shiat on to other people. Also there's the possibility of accidental/unintentional infection of others. For all we know, someone spread AIDS through blood-spray today during the marathon. Worse, emergency responders. Assholes like this guy need to be put down.

Lots o' ignorance:

- You can't "spread" AIDS, you can only spread the virus HIV. HIV takes on average 10 years to become AIDS in a normal person.
- Treatment is expensive for lots of "preventable" things-cancer, diabetes, pregnancy, etc. So what? It's covered by insurance plans. And there are public/private grants to pay for medications for those who can't afford them, because the alternative is (a) letting people die a horrible death and (b) worsening the spread of it.
- On treatment your likelihood of spreading HIV is reduced by about 95% and with today's medications you essentially live a normal life and will never develop AIDS.
- Blood spray won't infect anyone unless it gets into open wounds. Emergency responders knowingly put their lives at risk in many ways every day. If they think they may have been exposed, they can get PeP treatment which is extremely effective at preventing infection.

What is wrong with this guy? Everyone in Africa knows all you have to do to cure yourself is rape a pre-teen virgin. He must not care about his health.

/Or there is a shortage of pre-teen African virgins.
//Which is why there is probably so much AIDS

Wow.  The attitudes toward HIV espoused in this thread remind me why I work with HIV-positive individuals.

One of the first lectures in my EMT class bit back was about how rather difficult it is for HIV to be transmitted to a first responder. I've had HIV+ patients and it hasn't changed a thing on how I handled them.

It's not about HIV.   It's about a self centered d*ck that intentionally infected another person.  Now do ya' get it?

/don't call everyone a dickweed just becaue you're stupid.

cheap_thoughts: This is why I tell every guy before they potentially date me that I have herpes.

/not really
//just the ones I can't stand
///had only one still try to pursue me after I told him

I had a former coworker (opposite of my then-presenting gender, my age) tell me that she had herpes...  and then spend the next six months trying to get into my pants before finally leaving for Christmas vacation and never coming back.  Literally, never.  She'd stolen $600 (IIRC) and was afraid of being arrested.

My wife saw a great deal of HIV+/AIDS patients in Tanzania. Many of them also came in with TB. She was treating them all as you would a patient without these conditions. When I visited her there, I went to the hospital...it was pretty disheartening thing to see...but they were getting really good treatment and as a bonus she nor I got TB!

She told me a funny/sad story about one misconception of contracting AIDs among the Masai. Apparently, they were explained condom use by missionaries who used a stick as a model to show how to put a condom on. So, when they went out to these peoples homes after several months, they came across an odd site. There was a row of widely spaced sticks around the perimeter of the hut(s) with condoms slipped over the tops. Quite a disconnect there.

/I really like Tanzania
//Lot of violent crime in the countries that border though.

People who have HIV and then have unprotected sex (although I do not know why anybody would have unprotected sex in this day and age) should be charged with attempted murder and if the person dies due to contracting HIV/AIDS said person should be charged with murder!
