No dad.  Taught myself to drive a stick (after a few pointers from the guy I bought my first beater from) as I drove it home.

This is the sort of thinking that goes along with "lets live in a trailer park".

Places to give a driving experience...
Warehouse district on a weekend.
Empty parking lots.
Go kart track.

I hope nothing else happens to anyone on TPB while they are filming TPB 3. Shiatty Bill and Phil Collins already passed away this week.

CSB- I grew up on a farm and was driving tractors from around age 7-8 onward.  When I was old enough to start driving "for real", my dad decided to teach me how to recover a vehicle from uncontrollable spins.  We took our old farm truck out in the back 40 when it was wet or icy (don't remember which) and drove into and out of spins all over the field.  Learned all about turning into the spin, the different types of spins/recoveries you can do in 2-wheel vs 4-wheel drive, etc.  It was one of the best times I ever had with my old man.

I remember when I was 14. My dad drove me to an abandoned parking lot in an ' 88 Saab 900 5-speed. He said, "Son, today you're going to learn how to drive."

I drove The Dragon in Tennessee less than three weeks later. Probably not that well, but it's nice to have a former motogp racer as a dad and teacher.

Lemme add, we don't get a whole lotta snow in East Tennessee. That winter (98 I think) we got about four inches of snow. Dad says, "Son, get in the car. Today you're gonna learn how to drive on ice. Head for the Smokys."

My teenage kids loved it when I rousted them out of bed in at 3am to go learn to drive in snow after an Atlanta snowstorm. I still do this myself, just to stay in practice. If I'm condemned to be a yankee the rest of my life without any hope of legal naturalization as a southerner, I might as well continue to talk too loud, and drive sanely on snow and ice. A lot of the sane part is going to work at 4am so I don't share the road with idiots. By noon that day the snow's usually gone.

I learned to drive around 10-11. I don't recall exactly but it was mostly around the ranch. I was driving on the road by 12 and by 14 I drove myself to high school every day.

/No, it wasn't legal even then but no one cared in those days.

My grandpa came to ask me to mow his lawn, a job I did regularly. He lived four blocks over the hill from us. I was 8 and was real surprised by his getting in the passenger side and saying, "let's go", He said to just ride the clutch, which i could 'just' get down enuf to get it in gear (a 1949 Ford f-1 with a 3-speed on-the-floor stick) and don't touch the gas. I hopped it to the stop sign and then got it going up toward his house. I lived across the street from a grocery store and I was a little nervous about the cop sipping a pop in the parking lot. I idled on up the hill and the cop pulled up behind me. I was freakin', but grandpa said he could just go around if he was in a hurry. I pulled into the shop and got it stopped. The cop blocked the driveway and watched as I got out of the cab. He laughed at my face and told me I did good for a first time, and said I needed more practice. This was in 1957...try doing it with your kid today.

/I was doing all of grandpa's hauling six years later
//old Norwegian carpenter, so i learnt houses good.
///Named a boy Laverne, which he pronounced,"Lawern"

First time Dad let me drive I was 7. We were hunting on one of his business associate's ranches and I had just killed my first deer. He let me walk the 318 yards back down the sendero and get the truck which was parked perpendicular to the narrow dirt road.

Me getting that thing (4 door Ford F-150 with big iron bumpers on both ends) turned around was like Austin Powers turning around in the hallway.

/Yep, CS.

Hey, Coos Bay makes the news! Ah, my hometown does me proud.  Started to read the article and immediately knew which trailer park this came out of. I got pulled over years ago driving away from there, because of all the drugs and stupidity that goes on there.

Yes, I got pulled over for being seen driving away from a trailer park. State Police trooper and several city cops searched my car and possessions for 45 minutes, before letting me go on about my business. I didn't complain, since I was illegally driving on a learner's permit at the time, with no insurance, and they let that slide.

can't replace the way it made me feel

Just a dirt road with trash on each side
But I was Mario Andretti

Trim?  Sporty?  Mid-sized?  It had a 5.7 liter engine and you could lie down and take a nap on that hood.

I had a friend who had one of these with matching vomit-green interior. He loved it so much he had power windows installed in it. It was a very large auto.

Heh. Similar here. Learned in a 70s era T-Bird. The suspension was so mushy it was very much like driving a boat.
