Some people are idiots. This is nothing like the IRA bombs sh*t.

Well they are out of practice.

/really doubt it's the IRA

Me too.  If it's at all IRA related, they're down to their C team.  This is bad, but not apocalyptic or anything.

A lot of support for the IRA came from the USA back in the bad old days.  I doubt they'd bomb anyone inside the US unless it was an assassination of someone they really REALLY wanted dead.

The IRA usually called in warnings so no one would be killed, unless some kind of miscommunication occurred such as happened in Omagh.

Um...no.  Just...no.  First thing off wiki:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyde_Park_and_Regent%27s_Park_bombings

I should've been more clear.  The IRA generally stayed clear of killing innocent civilians.  Military targets were fair game.

Again, NO.  You're cruising for an ignoring...today is NOT the day for this kind of apologist crap, frankly.

621 people disagree with you.

Permanently.

Sweet potato jesus, an ignoring?  Please, no.  Anything but being ignored on the internet.

In any case, you're missing the point.  The IRA doesn't bomb marathons.

ursomniac: Apparently they're classified as "home-made" bombs.  Given the coincidence of the Marathon happening on April 15th, I suspect we'll discover that the bombers have Tea Party connections.

I noticed also that Boston= Site of Boston Tea Party.

That said, it could just as easily be Al Qaeda. Multiple bombs at a large, crowded event is kinda their thing.

But it's too soon for such speculation now, really.

Cell phone service is down in Boston to prevent remote detonations (in the case there are more bombs).  Luckily, from what I've seen from videos, runners were not the main people affected by this.  Mostly bystanders.  When the first explosion went off, only 1 runner fell down (either because of shrapnel or possibly just out of shock) and he was damn close to the guard railing.

First responders now have to track down every reported suspicious package bigger than a crumpled pack of smokes.  Bad night for those folks and I do indeed pray for their safety.

These are not equally likely reasons. The Boston Marathon is clearly the reason they chose today to set off the bombs. You're the only person I've seen that has any doubt whatsoever that it was just a coincidence that the bombs were set off at the Boston Marathon finish line, and it could have happened on any random Monday.

Were you there and suffered a head injury from the bombs?

justtray: ColdFusion: justtray: No way only two dead. Go watch the video of the first explosion. At least a half dozen people are within the kill zone of that blast alone. Likely more.

And you know what they say about unconfirmed reports, like stereotypes, they're often correct.

NBC confirmed a suspect is under guard. Police report swollen eyes, broken leg, baton bruises likely do to proximity of the blast.

1)  Two died already, but some of those transported may not make it.  So, that may not be the end of it just yet.
2)  NBC's "confirmation" was refuted by the Boston PD Commissioner. "Those reports are not true, there is no suspect in custody.":   http://livewire.talkingpointsmemo.com/entry/boston-police-commissione r -there-is-no-suspect-in

ontariolightning: Tarl3k: Try not to quote this, as the NY post will probably repeat it as truth, but here are some things to think about:  When has an international terror organization like AQ ever done a terror attack and gone small?  In the grand scheme of things, this is a pretty small terrorist attack.  Second, when has an international terror organization ever let this much time after an attack pass before claiming credit?  This is more than likely a domestic terrorist, pissed that he had to pay taxes, and wanted to take his petty frustrations out on a large number of innocent people and become infamous at the same time...

also because there was no chatter about this attack. You dont get warnings usually of a lone wolf type attack

I know  I am asking to be handed tinfoil for this, but I think the Newtown angle is also at play. It just seems like some lone gun nut (either side).

as an athiest i can hardly keep people in my prayers but i sure am sending my best wishes out to the deceased, their families and friends, the injured, medical personnel, and all the other people affected by this attack in ways both large and small. stay strong, millions of people are supporting you in this time of tragedy, and will continue to have your collective backs as the guilty parties are apprehended and brought to justice.

The Finish line isn't just a finish line, it's a square.  People are always there Marathon or not.
The Library is a public building, the damaged building across the street contains a Bank and a Consulate.
Monday is like any other day.  When a person snaps, they snap.  Specially scheduled publicity events are not considered.

Is it likely that the intention was to hit observers to the race?  Yes.
Is it conclusive?  No.
Making assumptions is not wise, it is not useful, and it rarely leads to the truth.

I apologize for not simply jumping on the "I hate _____ bandwagon" you're driving.  You'll get over it.

fredklein: kmmontandon: Uh, those are pretty standard these days

Perhaps. I've never heard of bomb sniffing dogs at the finish line of a marathon before- what are they looking for? Runners who just ran 26 miles with a pipebomb in their shorts?? And why the National Guard? Doesn't Posse Comitatus apply? (ie: can't use military for police work?)

On the other hand, if they KNEW there were going to be bombs near the finish line- that would explain the sniffer dogs, and the NG. Of course, if they KNEW, why didn't they do/say anything??

Even if they did have some idea that there had been a bomb threat or some indication that someone might do something at the marathon, what is the correct course of action (assuming they didn't have hard info of who and where)?

Shut the whole thing down? Or deploy extra police and national guard and put bomb sniffing dogs out?

This is how conspiracy theories get started.

Yes, so why are you trying to start one?

Watched the whole thing. For those of you afraid to watch this because it might show carnage... it just barely does NOT.

This got me all worked up emotionally. Not 15 seconds after the explosion you hear a cop yell THERE'S GONNA BE A LOT OF PEOPLE INJURED and everyone springs into action - police, national guard, and random persons working together to pull out the barriers so they can get to the 'ground zero' and help. Bunch of motherfarking heroes. It takes a special type of person to run toward the explosions.
