netweavr: CNN is reporting ball bearings were used as shrapnel.

Time for CSI:Boston to check who watched Swordfish on Netflix recently.

Lars The Canadian Viking: vudukungfu: Silly Jesus: Who the hell needs 30 ball bearings?

EXACTLY!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M18_Claymore_mine

That uses actual high explosives and non hardened steel balls, whereas this dumbass used hardened steel ball bearings which shatter and gun powder which is subsonic and produces more waste heat and lots of smoke.

"Kincheloe immediately suggested using softer 1/8-inch (3.2 mm) steel "gingle" balls, which were used in the foundry process. They did not spall from the shock of the explosive, but deformed into a useful aerodynamic shape similar to a .22 rimfire projectile. Using a homemade chronograph, the engineers clocked the balls at 3,775 feet (1,151 m) per second. The second change was to use a poured plastic matrix to briefly contain the blast from the explosive, so that more of the blast energy was converted into projectile velocity. After a number of experiments, the engineers settled on Devcon-S steel-filled epoxy to hold the balls in place. With this change, the velocity improved to 3,995 feet (1,218 m) per second.[1]"

Not to sound nutty, but that, to me, implies someone who constructed a device based on what he or she had on hand, or could purchase "safely", and who didn't have a lot of financial backing to do so. Pure conjecture on my part, however.

Mad Tea Party: I think planting farking bombs at the Boston marathon should have been your first clue that this person/persons wanted to murder on a massive scale.

Explosions only go so far, unless you're talking about a nuke.

However, things like ball bearings can turn a bomb into a bomb with machine gun turret.

Omahawg: WizardofToast: netweavr: CNN is reporting ball bearings were used as shrapnel.

Are ball bearings an easy trick for bombs or is it more towards the professional side? I'm dumb with weapons.

I always thought nails were the preferred shrapnel for bombs such as this

Nails do nastier damage, but due to terrible ballistic shape, and low weight dont carry very far or carry much energy. The basically lacerate. Ball bearings have a fair ballistic shape, and good weight for their size, they fly farther and carry a lot of energy, they are basically bullets.

The Incredible Sexual Egg: CNN is reporting the BPD put out a report telling people to be on the look out of a black guy with a backpack and an accent....or every cab driver in Boston

Security footage of the suspect has been found.

Deducing who the culprits might be in such a situation:

1. TERRORISTS: Look at those who are "most likely" to have reason to commit such an act out of hatred.

2. FALSE FLAG: Look at the ENEMIES of category 1, as they might benefit from creating enemies of their enemies.

In other words, you ask the simple question: WHO BENEFITS?

3. CRAZIES: Consider that it MAY have been committed by one or more lunatics with NO apparent motive other than death and destruction.

Yeah it's not as if we don't have an entire generation of Americans with a bone to pick, and firsthand knowledge of how IED's are made and used to maximum effect, now is it.

puffy999: ACunningPlan: I know nothing about how bombs work, so with that in mind: could the bombs have been made weak deliberately to minimize detection with ball-bearings to compensate damage-wise?

I'm just speculating, but it seems that a bomb that would've had enough firepower to blow... "through" more stuff would not have been too terribly difficult to sneak by, if they made it this far.

I'd imagine someone who knew more would have created much more damaging devices... not that these weren't damaging, but it seems that at least one blast was forced upward a bit instead of outward (say, inside of a garbage can or blocked by people/stuff), which may have saved some casualties.

Thanks:)

hockeyfarker: what_now: They keep showing this video, and there's an old guy who's 10 feet from the finish and when the bomb hits, he simply collapses. I know it's not the worst thing that happened, but the idea of a guy of advanced years getting hit by shrapnel 10 feet from finishing a marathon... I don't even.

I saw some aftermath pictures, that guy was okay. Well, he wasn't bleeding, eyes were open and alert, cops were helping him, anyways. No shrapnel. Probably couldn't hear shiat though.

Be more worried about a heart attack honestly.  Old ticker like that pushed to extremes and then given a massive dose of adrenaline, enough to make him feint, yea i'm thinking 24 hour watch at least.

It certainly looks like an eight year-old.

Pic is SFW, just heartbreaking.

That's no 8 yr old, dude.

look underneath..........

I did.  Underneath does not appear to be an 8 yr old.  The outfit / shoes are too big and ugly for an 8 yr old.  More like some fastfood worker.

It's not an 8-year-old, it's an adult woman missing the entirety of her right leg. She's still a live in that photo, so that's good. Someone else posted the pic and it got deleted because ew, gross. NSFW, obviously.

I didn't see the second pic from a different angle. Well, now I did, but when looking at the first one, .....

Now they have an alleged person of interest at some womens hospital.......SWAT showed up and entered the hospital...ATF.......

Yes, but in 9/11 everyone took responsibility, even an obscure Japanese Communist group that claimed it was "just revenge for the nuclear bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki".

Severed arteries contract and constrict, so you don't bleed out right away like you would with a cut artery. If he's alive it's because the arteries were severed so he didn't bleed out on the spot.

Looks like they're getting ready to execute him.

Sad part, might be for his and his family's safety. Combine the bullshiat New York Post headline with that pic unhooded and a guy commenting "hey, I know that guy, he's _______" and you have a house or family at the wrong end of an angry mob.

Al-Jazeera shows no thin skin with graphic footage. Their stuff in Syria and Libya was frightening when I started watching them. Seeing people get shot on video messed with me.

Although I noticed CNN was more passive in the nasty footage and images. Kind of shocking since western media likes to censor a lot of violent stuff.

Probably was backpack delivery though, judging by the lower extremity injuries. Someone dropped a backpack to the ground, went to the second site, dropped a second backpack, then left. Boom.

Special level of hell reserved for this a-hole. F*cking children were there.

These days? Yup.

It is interesting that they had several patrols of bomb snifing dogs at the Raleigh-Durham airport this Monday.  I fly every week and this is the first time that I have seen this. Very unusual. I wonder if the U.S. government had intelligence that something was going to happen this week that led to elevated measures.

I've had national guard, bomb sniffing dogs, full assualt weapons and radiation sniffers at Penn Station in NYC since 9/11.

It's called my daily commute.

There's a difference between being an apologist and pointing out that the IRA was not indiscriminately into terror bombing civilians during the Troubles.

You're also ignoring all the deaths inflicted by the other sides in that conflict.

Here you go:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Troubles#Casualties

And you know what? The worst bombing that occurred, the one in Omagh, had several telephone calls placed warning well in advance that the bomb was going to go off. There was confusion about where the bomb was on the part of the authorities, and that was what contributed to the casualties.

It was a terrible, reprehensible act, that should not have been done, but still, nevertheless, calls were placed warning about it ahead of time.

I remember watching the 60 minutes on NYC security. That city is basically on total lockdown when it comes to terror. Among other measures, they have boats that do nothing but roam around the island of Manhattan looking for unusual radiation signatures.
