Well, it sure wasn't 'an act of fluffy-bunny-kindness'.

Begoggle: Mikey1969: smells_like_meat: Boston Athletic Association president Joanne Flaminio previously said there was "special significance" to the fact that the race is 26.2 miles long and 26 people died at Sandy Hook Elementary school

This is perhaps the stupidest statement ever in the history of everything.

There's no way anybody said that, you have to be making that up.

Otherwise, I agree, it's pretty much the stupidest thing ever said. Marathons have been 26 miles long for the entire history of marathons.

26 letters in the alphabet!
Humans have 23 pairs of chromosomes which is AWFULLY close to 26!!

And February only has 28 days, that was just two months ago... Looking glass? Through it.

Did anyone else notice that the bomb went off in front of mostly NATO flags?

ursomniac: Apparently they're classified as "home-made" bombs.

As opposed to store bought bombs? Do they sell those at Home Depot?

I wont ask for a citation because there isn't one.  Nutjob.

Gyrfalcon: People do realize, don't they, that "police dog" =/= "bomb dog", right? Just because there was a police dog there nosing over backpacks doesn't mean it was looking for explosives specifically. In a crowd this size, it's more likely they were there looking for drugs than explosives.

Thank God they protected us from the weed in those backpacks! The death toll might have been... uh, lower of they were looking for explosives.

Good jorb!

2013-04-15 07:21:45 PM

what_now: They keep showing this video, and there's an old guy who's 10 feet from the finish and when the bomb hits, he simply collapses. I know it's not the worst thing that happened, but the idea of a guy of advanced years getting hit by shrapnel 10 feet from finishing a marathon... I don't even.

I don't know the strength of the bomb or even really much about the human physiological condition once they've run for 26.19 miles, but I can imagine scenarios where he collapsed due to weakness and the pressure wave, or was startled by the sound and fell. After such a run, anyone in that position would have difficulty getting up (and at least one runner indicated such a point in an interview).

ds615: Today was the Boston Marathon.
Today is Tax Day.
Today is Monday.
They are all equally likely reasons for a bombing.
I will wait until facts are discovered.

If you visit Wiki for 15th April, there are a whole bunch of events listed, and if one was that way inclined it's possible to make a good creative "reason why" out a good number of them:)  But, it just so happens, this date is the 44th anniversary of NK shooting down a U.S. Navy plane over the Sea of Japan....

Personally, I believe it's more likely to be a home-grown crazy with an axe to grind.

Just proves the ancient Greeks were in on the whole Sandy Hook massacre.

Yeah, why isn't that making it on the news more? Sandy Hook was a long time in the planning stages, and nobody points to the links between Ancient Greece and not very ancient Connecticut...

Yeah; it would probably be prudent for anyone of arabian, north african, or middle eastern lineage to stay inside tonight.  No sense ending up like those Sikhs after 9/11.  Just as people have commented above, this is the time that the irrational, hateful racists will use as an excuse for violence.

Could the blast wave cause a concussion at that distance, on a person of advanced age? That was the first thought I had when I saw the vid.

zippolight2002: I'm going to throw my theory out there for shiats and giggles, just so I can come back to it and see how close I got.

-Single domestic terrorist
-Novice
-Built then stashed the bombs a store/hotel along the marathon path prior to marathon prep, allowing him to get through initial checkpoints without any hassle (assuming they have them)
-Waited for a dog sweep before getting the bombs and planting them 10 minutes prior to detonation before another dog sweep could detect them

i'll pile on that theory - this is feeling like (to my amateur gut - witness to the aftermath of a farkton of aftermath in domestic and foreign terrorism vigils and early stage "analysis" via various media - so unfortunately not aninexperienced amateur gut) a lone dickhead who is kinda smart in a crafty way and has some sort of beef with authority over something minor in comparison to the damage the farker caused. add a bit of simple planning, a bit of luck, and there you go.

remember, a dude killed lennon from less than 10 feet away on his goddamn doorstep. crazy + determined + delusional can sometimes = "success" from a "greater damage" perspective out of all proportion to the pissant doing the damage.

I noticed that in the video too.  Dr Sanjay Gupta finally broke it down and said the pressure wave can cause "concussive" impact to the head, and he seemed to be right next to it.

Having run two marathons, I'd say that when I finished both, I was basically on fumes for the last few miles and couldn't do much other than run forward.  Even if I'd made it past something like that uninjured, I don't think my brain would be able to pull myself together to do much other than fall over the way he did.

Mikey1969: I was wondering, too. I haven't seen a decent video that showed when/where the second bomb went off. That cell phone video someone posted earlier was weak sauce shiat, it was mostly of the ground, and then it shook...

I don't know if this is the one you're talking about but it clearly sounds like the other bomb went off about 12-14 seconds after the first. You can see the smoke of the second blast as it goes off.

God dammit, all i keep seeing is those yellow balloons. You know a kid was holding those. I don't think this was domestic terrorism, that being said, we should not overreact... this was just another successful plot that is a rarity when you look at the big picture.
