haven't they done studies that show kids who go through the DARE program have higher rates of drug use than kids who don't?

I know the anti-smoking ones simply remind me that I sure could use a cigarette. And now that I mention it..

Aarontology: haven't they done studies that show kids who go through the DARE program have higher rates of drug use than kids who don't?

If I could do it over I would have fought to keep my kid out of DARE like the fundies do over sex ed. It completely undermined my ability to have honest conversations with my daughter about drugs and alcohol for a few years. Also she was in the 4th grade and it amounted to useless brainwashing that is short lived on a child too young to fully grasp the subject.

2013-04-15 03:54:56 PM
Hence the reason the tobacco companies went with funding that last anti-smoking media campaign.

The proper method of reduction is to treat it with conversational intolerance. Make it culturally taboo.

It would also be interesting to see if using truth in anti-drug PSAs might add some credibility to the material.

Maybe because treating people like idiots and treating "drugs" lie cannabis as worse than death kinda comes off as bullshiat.

Long before the egg and just say no, they showed us an anti-drug film in Jr. High.  The scene I still remember was a great looking hippie girl tripping out on the blue flame on a gas stove burner and when she reached out to it it turned into a blue flower, now that was cool.

missiv: Aarontology: haven't they done studies that show kids who go through the DARE program have higher rates of drug use than kids who don't?

Studies have shown DARE has worked as well as the War on Drugs. This is why some school districts have taken dollars meant for DARE and used them somewhere else while quietly shuttering their DARE programs.

But, but, but...the cartoon lion and singing songs?! What could appeal to growing minds better?

I was one of those kids brainwashed by drug PSA's. All the way up until I was about 22 I was convinced drugs were an evil blight on mankind and anyone who did them were unrepentant losers. Then after I was diagnosed with various mood disorders I decided to give weed a shot. I figured, hey, it can't be worse than the pills they want to pump me full of. Now I'm a blissfully happy pothead.

What I would give to see illegal drugs given the full scientific research they deserve. I'd be willing to bet that there is a laundry list of mental disorders that could be treated or outright cured by currently illegal drugs.

2013-04-15 06:04:24 PM
I had a kid on a bike wearing a DARE shirt offer to sell me weed one time.

Not quite true.  Try watching it with Mike Nelson providing commentary.  Even then, being stoned does make it better, but stonedness isn't absolutely required to enjoy it.

that one where the person loses air and sinks into the couch kind of sells it for me. thanks, that is the feeling i am going for... but not like in 'trainspotting' where the guy sinks into the floor, they do a good enough job of showing the rest of the shiat that goes along with heroin to make me not want it.

I bet Degrassi leads to more drug use than any PSA or pharma advert.

Got the anti-drug thing back in 3rd or 4th grade back in the 70's (not sure if it was called DARE then or not). After all that time there is only 2 things that I remember about it:

1. the giant half-globe display that showed what all the different things looked like and the explanation of how each was bad. It was kinda cool because it looked like it was out of The Jetsons.
2. the one scene in the film that they showed: a girl (young teen perhaps) goes and raids the medicine cabinet. They show her downing handfulls of pills. There is a cut to her a few minutes later with her stumbling and holding her stomach. Then she massively pukes all over the place.

The biggest problem with the PSAs is two fold:
1. they try to use scare tactics instead of reason
2. most of the 'information' given is either outright bullshiat or statistical outliers

/the biggest danger of using marijuana is getting caught using marijuana
//it's mostly Maui Waui man, but it's got some Labrador in it

No doubt.

Nancy Reagan had me crushing pretzel salt in 2nd grade so I could snort it.
