Takehito Yamamoto at Waseda University said North Korea's threats have "severely weakened" repulsion felt by Japanese about bolstering their military.

Wouldn't it be great if Japanese militarism were reawakened somehow?

This can only end badly. The region needs to step back and realise that NK poses no appreciable threat and china would not object to US aegis cruisers acting if NK launched anything

Meh, why not? They have just as much right to have a standing military. Unless there's a Hirohito in charge...

"Japan" didn't claim the right to anything. One dude said that they "should have the right," and since America's been doing the same thing for the last 60 years, anyone who doesn't like it can stuff it.

Anyway, it would take a national referendum and years of debate in the Diet before the constitution could be amended to allow that, so people should chill the fark out.

I honestly think that KIm wants to make the country Western but can't do it. So this is what he can do and he knows they can't win.

So all of this is going to lead to someone invading and saving the county

Not even that much.  One dude said they should have the capability.  The Japanese military is structured so that they don't have any long range strike ability.  Even if they really, really wanted to hit North Korea with a preemptive strike, they couldn't with their current equipment.

Give Japan a "legitimate" reason to change its constitution.

Our last two proxy wars with China didn't resolve the issue. Let's attack them now so we don't have to defer this inevitable conflict any longer.

And since it's obvious that Russians, who are part Asian in heritage, will jump in on the side of the Chinese, we should be ready to destroy them as well.

Well, technically they could. They have almost two hundred pieces of artillery that could hit Pyongyang from Tsushima. I'm not sure the South Koreans would be very happy about Japan shooting over top South Korea though.

It would be hilarious if NK's threads made Japan decide to become a nuclear power. China would go apeshiat. Just seeing that would make it worth it.

Lend Lease to Japan.  We let them borrow our B-2s (and aircrews and support personnel, etc).

I was surprised at how serious and dark the first Godzilla movie was.  It's actually very good.  Make sure you watch the original and not the North American version, and it's not because of the subtitles.

Released only 9 years after Hiroshima.

Go go Gojira!!!

No they dont have the ability for an extended strike. I sure the US can trade 100,000 camrys for a used aircraft carrier, though. Its another replacement ship to build in Norfolk. Jobs jobs jobs

I said it before, but as a result of China's policy of supporting NK, they are just going to end up with a nuclear armed SK and Japan right on their doorstep as a result of this.

Anyone who thinks the recent statement from the Chinese leadership about the Korean peninsula was pointed at North Korea is an idiot.

It doesn't matter that the Chinese agreed to sanctions recently.

That remark was pointed at Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, India, the US, and lots of other nations. And statements like these from the Japanese about preemptive war (thanks Cheney and Wolfowitz) are only encouraging the Chinese to prove that they were talking about someone other than North Korea.

Are they pissed at North Korea? Sure. Are they pissed that the US and the other nations are starving North Korea and forcing illegal immigration into China? You bet. China owns North Korea and they will deal with them the way they like. And they will deal with the foreign devils when and how they like. That recent speech was the shot across our bow and we missed the significance of it.

Actually from a technology standpoint they're one of if not the most advanced in the world. Their constitution limits their involvement outside their country though so very few actually see the defense force in action. They're very well disciplined and man for man I'd put them against any country in the world. That said they have a limit on the number of men, their culture has shifted to a non direct confrontational mindset and they lack the logistics to actively invade another country without using our equipment.

However if they were serious reality is we'd cover the logistics and provide troops.

And yet, the only aggressive military moves made by China are on the border of NK.  Hmmmmm
