seems like they might have cause and effect messed up here.  a high percentage of people could be considered 'shallow' in any of the varying definitions one could give to the (admittedly subjective) term.  a high percentage of people text, so there's going to be some correlation there.  but I feel more like there's just generally shallow, superficial people out there regardless of technology -  they exist in every generation, and in this current generation the texting may be a symptom, but its very unlikely a cause.   assholes existed before texting came about, no matter how you want to define the term 'asshole'.

I do, however, think that texting, twitter, and social media in general have enabled and tempted people who are already superficial to further embrace a very narcissistic lifestyle where they are never living in the present, they are always videotaping, broadcasting to the world the minutia of their everyday lives as if they are stars in their own reality TV show.  I have facebook and all, but I can never understand why people feel the need to tell me about what they had for breakfast, how many miles their morning jog was, and how many weeks into their pregnancies they are.  I can understand if you went on a vacation to somewhere cool and took some nice pictures to post those, but I don't need your daily itinerary down to the minute. Freud would have had a field day with facebook and twitter (and fark for that matter...)

If you texted less often, would you cease to be a shallow human being?

It's my own fault. I clearly saw the newsmax tag, and I clicked anyway.

Reading that "article" made me 30% dumber, according to the University of Winnipeg.
