Buttercrud: The first inside pitch you get, lean into it and let it hit you.

Rudi: I don't want to get hurt.

Buttercrud: All right. But you want to win the game.

Rudi: Yeah.

Buttercrud: Engelberg is up after you. We need runs. He's been murdering the ball lately.

Carlos Quentin doesn't know how the game is played. He thinks they waited until a full count to drill him on purpose?

2013-04-13 09:26:11 PM
Sure Quentin has a stance that leads him to get hit at an above average rate. But ultimately if the pitcher hadn't lowered his shoulder like a complete moran all this would be a non issue.

2013-04-13 09:26:44 PM
Why could Quentin either try to doge the pitch or just take his base without incident?

B/c when you have a chance to knock out a division rival's second ace for ~12 starts, for an only 8 game suspension, you take that chance.

I already used up all my cares about Greinke in another thread today. Quentin is a dink but so is Greinke.

2013-04-13 09:43:16 PM
I really enjoyed Greinke's statement later.  "I don't know why he thinks I hit him on purpose.  None of the times I've hit him have been on purpose!"

If that's true cool, but you can see why he might think you did since you've hit him a bunch of times and are supposed to be a hot-shiat pitcher.  I can  especially see it given that you dropped your glove and decided to get tough with a guy who outweighs you by a full 50 pounds.  Even if you DID do it on accident and there's no animosity, you just hurt the guy and gave him the impression you did it on purpose.

Shockingly he didn't like that and beat you up.  Whoops.

Is anyone actually still defending Quentin?  Greinke may be a douche, but 1) there's no farking way he was trying to hit him in that situation and 2) Quentin was already on his way to the mound before Greinke did his tough guy routine.

We better hide Erik Bedard and Jon Lester too, since, like Greinke, they have hit Quentin three times. And just to be on the safe side, maybe the fourteen guys that have hit him twice. Man, it seems like everybody has had it in for this guy. No wonder he snapped.

Greinke wouldn't have broken his collarbone if he hadn't lowered his shoulder into the charging Quentin. That and Greinke is made of glass, he hurt himself playing a pick-up game of basketball a few years back.

When you make a career out of getting hit by pitches on purpose, you have no business charging the mound.

When Quentin gets back from his eight games off, the Padres will be playing in Baltimore, with a DH. It'll be interesting to see where the first pitch he faces will go.

Supposedly Quentin's been trying to find out for years why Greinke likes to throw pitches at him.  He asks friends that are on Greinke's teams to find out what his problem is, and he always avoids giving any sort of answer.  Greinke is a coont, and so when yet another one of his pitches smacked into Quentin, and Greinke had the douchitude to mouth off, Quentin finally snapped.

Hell, he's been hit by a TON of pitches in his career, and yet this is the first time he's rushed the pitcher from what I understand...doesn't that strike anyone as odd?  If he were a serial hot-head, sure, be mad, but if Greinke didn't have the bone density of an 80 year old woman this would be a non-issue.

But keep up with the retarded-ass argument that he should be suspended for the length of Greinke's DL stay...

Nick Hagadone did something similar last year. He's a pitcher, he has no excuse. That's one of the key lessons from Bull Durham, for chrissakes.

It was his wrist after slamming a bat because fouling off a pitch huwt his widdle feewings.  Either way, the mountain of evidence against him being a goddamned moron who deserves a few HBP's waved off for leaning into them is pretty damning.

If he gets his suspension lifted, expect to see a LOT of cops at Dodger Stadium this week, because he's going to get his ass handed to him otherwise. And he will get plunked again that series, whether he wants to or not.

I'm just excited to see all the "Quentin was a prick for reacting violently" Dodger fans show up on Monday and act violently towards not only Quentin, but anyone wearing an "SD" on their clothing.  That'll show everyone the true brain power of the Dodger-nation.   Your post kind of helps to highlight that mentality.

Won't have to worry about that, padres fans are practically nonexistent as it is, they barely show up to home games, much less road ones. Case in point, there's been a few threads about this already, and I've yet to see one padres fan post. However plenty of giants fans putting their garlic fry stink and hate on the comments page, but that's due to their team starting a long slide to irrelevance this year.

2013-04-14 05:28:28 PM
And Angels and Padres fans usually have a good safe time at Dodgers games, as do most fans of other teams. It's just giants fans being their doughty selves that end up with mustard all over their Barry Bonds throwback. And I'm not talking about Stow, that was tragic and completely different, and his attackers were not baseball fans, just cowards who were looking for trouble. That's like calling all niners fans homicidal maniacs based on one stabbing at candlestick.

www.baseballprospectus.com

Greinke's pitches to righties that day.  The pitch that hit Quentin is the '6' in the upper left.  It's about 6 inches inside and 5 inches high.  He missed the strike zone by that much on a bunch of pitches, including two much more inside.

It was an 89-mph pitch on a 3-2 count in a 2-1 game between division rivals.  That's not the moment for an intentional beaning.  Greinke isn't a guy who hits lots of batters-- he hit 2 in 212 IP last year, and averages about 6 per full season. He happens to have hit Quentin twice before... in 2008 and 2009.  If he's a headhunter, he's a really patient one.

Carlos Quentin was hanging over the plate, and got hit by an inside pitch.  It's his thing, and he's been the leader in HBP the last two seasons.  He made no effort to evade the pitch.  It's a valid strategy, but you can't get mad when you get hit.

Plus, when you crowd the plate, guess where the cold spots are in your strike zone map?  They're high and inside, because you can't get your arms around that tightly with any force.  Quentin crushes balls middle-away and low-away, because he can easily square them up with his sweet spot.  Just like Quentin's strategy is to take away the outside edge and rack up HBPs, the pitchers' strategy will be to throw inside, and accept a few extra HBP for all the weak ground balls he'll produce.

Quentin charged the mound, and Greinke made no effort to attack, or do much of anything besides protect his pitching arm.  For that, he got slammed to the ground, breaking his other collar bone before his teammates arrived.  It's ridiculous that Quentin's suspension is so short.

If you make no effort to evade the pitch, it's a ball (out of strike zone) or strike (in strike zone).  It's never called, but here's the official rule, 6.08b:

"The batter becomes a runner and is entitled to first base without liability to be put out (provided he advances to and touches first base) when ... He is touched by a pitched ball which he is not attempting to hit unless (1) The ball is in the strike zone when it touches the batter, or (2) The batter makes no attempt to avoid being touched by the ball; If the ball is in the strike zone when it touches the batter, it shall be called a strike, whether or not the batter tries to avoid the ball. If the ball is outside the strike zone when it touches the batter, it shall be called a ball if he makes no attempt to avoid being touched. APPROVED RULING: When the batter is touched by a pitched ball which does not entitle him to first base, the ball is dead and no runner may advance."

In this situation, the difference would be academic-- the pitch was on a full count, so it's "Ball 4, take your base" anyway.

No rules change needed.  File this under:
