Jesus has been depicted in art as triumphant, gentle or suffering. Now, in a controversial new sculpture in downtown Toronto, he is shown as homeless - an outcast sleeping on a bench.

Prosperity Doctrine Jesus does not sleep on park benches.

Of course not. Christians think they're rich because Jesus was rich.

Jesus is too perfect to ever be destitute.

Wasn't being a poor outcast the whole point of Jesus?

Tigger: Wasn't being a poor outcast the whole point of Jesus?

It was when I went to Sunday school. I've long since recovered from religion, but have to wonder what the hell Bible people have been reading in the past couple of decades. Did they take out all of the stuff about loving your neighbor, blessed be the poor, and healing the sick?

"It was very upsetting because the rectors liked it, but when it got to the administration, people thought it might be too controversial or vague," he says. He was told "it was not an appropriate image."

Well, it does run the risk of inadvertently teaching someone the values of humility, kindness, compassion and/or generosity.

Schmalz, 43, roots the sculpture in his experiences in Toronto, where he trained at the former Ontario College of Art. "I was totally used to stepping over people. You're not aware they are human beings. They become obstacles in the urban environment and you lose a spiritual connection to them. They become inert, an inconvenience."

Just because you callously stepped over the homeless doesn't mean the rest of us did.  Your sculpture's statement is not "look everyone, there are homeless people," it's "oh wow, I just now noticed there are homeless people around."

Besides, the Prophet Muhammed was sharp dressed guy. And he had cats. You'd have this guy in nice silk robes with really nice armchair, a cup of coffee, and a cat. But he would be invisible. But you could draw the robes and hat in.

Not all embrace this interpretation, as Bryan Stallings and his wife Amy discovered. They run a mission in Branson, Mo., called Jesus Was Homeless.... They've been criticized for the mission's name.
"People who have issue with it are usually the staunch religious people," says Stallings, "especially those who follow prosperity teaching and doctrine that says if you are homeless or poor you don't have enough faith."

bigotry = power + discrimination

Religious institutions have power, therefore it is impossible to be bigoted towards them.

Jesus may not have been poor, but he definitely had a quality far worse in the eyes of many, he always sided with the poor, sick and otherwise needy and saw them as equally moral to those who weren't poor, and never put blame upon the needy for their condition. And he didn't exactly like what many of those with money were doing or how they made money.

There's a bible belt, predominately white and very ethnocentric city in Michigan that has this same statue.  I thought they were trying to make him look gangsta but now I understand it -- the Declaration of Independence doesn't belong to non-white statues.  Now it look likes he's dropping rhymes.

And the sculptor is just GIVING it away? Oh no? Yeah that price tag might have more to do with why it was rejected than the content of it. And a sculptor that is surprised that the first two people he tried to sell a sculpture to refused to buy? Welcome to the art industry, now you'll just have to try selling it to a thousand more people before you'll find a sucker I mean client.

[ilol'd]

Now the sculpture stands near Wellesley St. W., outside Regis College at the University of Toronto. It's a Jesuit school of theology, where priests and lay people are trained, with an emphasis on social justice.

As an atheist/recovering Catholic I gotta say the Jesuits have always impressed me as being one religious outfit that "gets" the teachings of Jesus better than many of the others.

What do biblical scholars know about Christ anyways?

'I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.' 37Then the righteous will answer him, saying, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? 38And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? 39And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?' 40And the King will answer them, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.'

It is hard to believe that the prosperity doctrine thing was able to gain ANY traction at all. It is so wildly at odds with the actual bible or anything attributed to early christian teachings. How on earth were people able to persuade themselves to believe it?

Most Christians haven't actually read the bible as people who do have a tendency to not be Christian afterward.

There's a bible belt, predominately white and very ethnocentric city in Michigan that has this same statue.  I thought they were trying to make him look gangsta but now I understand it -- the Declaration of Independence doesn't belong to non-white statues.  Now it look likes he's dropping rhymes.

The theory of relativity is a mathematical system that allows no exceptions. It is heavily promoted by liberals who like its encouragement of relativism and its tendency to mislead people in how they view the world.[1] Here is a list of 24 counterexamples: any one of them shows that the theory is incorrect.

The page for "liberal" had a picture of Hitler at the top for years. Someone decided that cost them credibility. So they replaced it with a picture of John Wayne Gacy--and moved the Hitler picture to the bottom.

I was saddened to see they got rid of the Gacy & Hitler pictures--until I realized they had replaced them with a picture of history's greatest monster.

Dayum, that place is like the Fort Knox of derp.

Loved the last line in the piece.

In practical usage, the term "liberal" is more closely synonymous with "radical," "immoral," "anti-freedom," or "bad."

Liberal = Bad.

Wow, how do you argue with logic like that?

/Oh right, you don't.
//Cos it isn't.
///Never mind.

Ok, this part killed me from their proven right page:

Conservapedia observed that the L.A. Lakers had packed their starting line-up with Overrated Sports Stars, and then hired their preferred coach despite how a better one was available.[55]

Liberals thought these players and the hiring of the new coach were good because the media told them so.

The L.A. Lakers run their record to 15-20, after losing 5 in a row, and in a massive embarrassment are unlikely even to make the playoffs.

GilRuiz1: Schmalz, 43, roots the sculpture in his experiences in Toronto, where he trained at the former Ontario College of Art.

I actually went to high school with this guy.  I remember him as being rather socially retarded, actually, so that take of yours is rather apt, I think.. he really wouldn't have noticed them.  think of him as being an artist with aspergers.  he's brilliant, but not all that aware.  I helped him with his first ever sculpture in grade 9 art class.  it was a demon crawling through a little kid's window in a dream... was freaky.   I read his biography of his life since then, and he is so driven in his work that he ignores sleep and eating, so no wonder he would walk over people.

AJisaff: GilRuiz1: Schmalz, 43, roots the sculpture in his experiences in Toronto, where he trained at the former Ontario College of Art.

The St. Andrews Presbyteran Church here in Ottawa (Ontario) has a statue of Jesus squatting in it's flowerbed (on Wellington Street, part of the main ceremonial drive and home to Parliament, the Supreme Court, the former US Embassy, and the Press) that looks a lot like homeless Jesus, only "at work". In his extended hand there is a hole in which you can insert a coin (a looney fits snugly).

Jesus is not only homeless but panhandling. In bits of Florida and other states, it is illegal for charities to feed the homeless and panhandlers.

When Jesus is outlawed only outlaws will be Jesus!

P.S. The artist's name is Schmalz (schmaltz). Ironic tag? Wo ist?

Biblical schuller...is that like a Harry Potter fanatic minus 2000 years and les blood?

No, it's like being a classicist, except for ancient Israelite texts instead of Greco-Roman ones.  You learn a dozen or so languages, study archaeology, philosophy, anthropology, literary study.  But what you don't learn to do too well is explain yourself to some random buttmunch on Fark.

A college professor who can't explain himself to a random farker? How well do you deal with students?

A Farker who doesn't know the difference between "scholar" and "professor?"

As Ric Romero might report: College students are often smarter than your average person with an internet connection and a login.

DmGdDawg: Jesus was homeless.

Matthew 8:19-20
19And a certain scribe came, and said unto him, Master, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest.
20And Jesus saith unto him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.

This.
