"She could be very charming and convincing," Mr. Schuppert, a private investigator and retired police officer, said this week, a little ruefully. "Also, the other candidates were not very" - he paused - "prepossessing."

"The real reason for doing that was to get a bunch of new members who were in her thrall," Mr. Schuppert said.

I have no real opinion on this article except to note that I really like the words "prepossessing" and "thrall" and think people should use them more.

Rich people who wanted to garden would have their own land to do it on.

Rich people who wanted to garden would have their own land to do it on.

And they would hire a small army of brown people to do most of the gardening.
This is just a bunch of yuppie milquetoast in-fighting - and chances are they're all just vying for the next new "reality"-show contract on BravoTV - "Real Garden Douchebags of New York City".  Should be a major hit.

Hilarious rich douchebag problems - I bet they would be a joy as part of an HOA.

Next step somebody is going to leave a steaming turd in someone's garden plot

I lived next to a food coop for several years where this same silliness was apparent and one thing became clear to me - its not the amount of money you have - its the amount of free time you have.

This was really beautifully written. It perfectly captures the douchebaggery of all parties involved without editorializing in the least. The story, all of it, has no consequence to anyone other than the douchebags involved, yet it was a good read.

There are a few luxury buildings (such as The Octagon), but by and large Roosevelt Island is not a rich people neighborhood.

There's a lot of publicly-subsidized housing for low-income people.  Also, Cornell Med and Sloan-Kettering have a lot of subsidized housing for their postdoctoral researchers, who are definitely not rich either.

It was a nice touch that, when the black soldier's perspective was shown, the scene was exactly the same--except all the ladies were black.
