Gosh, doctor Chanie, thanks for the medical advice.

Oh, she's not a doctor?

Chanie Kirschner has spent most of her journalism career writing advice columns -- to the lovelorn, to aspiring fashionistas, to pregnant soon-to-be mommas. And now she's giving advice to you, the environmentally-conscious but curious. So send her your quandaries -- she's sure to give you exactly what you're looking for ... or at least something close to what you're looking for ... or at least something.

Chanie -- who loves Reeses' peanut butter cups, a good chick flick, country music, and of course, giving advice -- lives in New Jersey with her husband Michael, and their baby Jakie. She's also the future author of the book, Chanie's Guide to Everything.

My mom calls them "potato farms." And yeah, harvest has to be every day on my kids, they get unmitigated junk in there. I swear there's an earwax fairy that comes by every night!

I haven't actively cleaned my ears in years. so i'm OK in that department. The occasional dig with some paper when it completely clogs is just about all i do.

Occasionally I'll lose hearing in one ear or the other because of it, usually after a cold. The drops don't work, peroxide doesn't work, nothing works. And the only advice you'll get from a doctor is: "Whatever you do, don't do anything!"

2013-04-13 12:16:15 PM
I find using one's finger tip as a sort of plunger with short, shallow jabs just outside the actual canal will draw excess wax out, then just wipe clean with a wet cloth

I used to have occasional pain in my jaws all the way up to my ears. Someone recommended an OTC ear cleaner and I gave it a try. Each ear had a hard lump of wax about the size of a corn kernel fall out. I haven't needed it again since. Now I let them fill up with soapy water while I shower and then go in deep with q-tips to dry them out.

You know what works?  Baby oil.  Drip some baby oil in your ear, plug the ear with a cotton ball or two.  In ten minutes you'll feel the clump of earwax glorp down your Eustachian tube.

Try laying down on your side, with the non-hearing ear on top. Had this one or two times and this usually helps, since it's most likely fluid from the cold stuck in the nasal passages around the ear which need to drain.

Um, do you have eardrums? Because the Eustachian tube is on the INSIDE of the ear, and generally the earwax is on the OUTSIDE, and the two sides are blocked by the eardrum.

That peroxide stuff works pretty well, and it's really fun to hear it fizzing.

This. I used to have a lot of otitis as a child because of buildup. Peroxide works wonders; the thing with peroxide is if you do it too often it can lead to infection after it fizzes out.

I have no idea where I read it, but I remember reading that having your ears covered for extended periods of time causes increased earwax buildup.  I've always taken that as true because I wear headphones a LOT of the time, and I feel the need to clean out my ears at least once or twice a week.

Protip: Don't use Qtips in your ears.  It's only a matter of time until some cotton breaks off and gets lodged in there.  It feels like you have water stuck in there and is quite annoying.  /it happened to me

Earwax, as TFA notes, is perfectly fine as long as it isn't forming gross visible clumps in your outer ear. The only time I ever mess with mine inside my ear canal is when it builds up so much as to interfere with hearing. Which has happened, like, twice in 50 years. One time I had to go to the doctor, where they used water irrigation to clean off a lump the size of a pea from my eardrum.

Once earwax has served its purpose, it travels from the inner ear to the outer ear

Looks like someone hasn't heard about the anatomy of the ear.

Ugh.  My uncle has cerebral palsy and had parents that didn't give a crap about treatment so he spent his life deteriorating in their house.  When my grandmother finally passed away my mother took him to the doctor (my grandparents were anti-medicine).  Well, my uncle complained about his hearing so the doctor took a look.  He ended up pulling out multiple layers of blood, pus and wax encrusted cotton with layers that he figured had been in there for years.  Seems as though my grandmother would soak cotton balls in alcohol and shove them down in his ear canals to clean them out.  As she got older she just started to forget to take them out.

Yes I did know that, but too much buildup will just gum up the works.  Usually the excess falls out by itself but every once in a while, maybe once or twice a year, if an ear won't unclog I give it a power-washing with a warm hydrogen peroxide-water solution and a rubber bulb.  The giant chunks of wax that come out are pretty gross, I have to say.

/Candling is stupid and doesn't do anything

I have trained earwigs for that job, sometimes they make their way through to the other side. You just have to make sure it isn't a pregnant female.

In the same way some people save balls of string or tinfoil I save earwax. My family donates happily ( they say it keeps me calm ), but the neighbors are sometimes reluctant. Harvesting earwax from strangers can
be difficult but doable ( may be humiliating for some ). I now have a ball the size of a small grapefruit perched on my dresser with other trophies I have taken. So far my family won't let me place it on the dining room table for holiday meals but I'm sure they'll come around soon. Any Farkers/Farkettes want to contribute? I won't tell, I promise.
