It was approved as a foreign aid package to Detroit.  It helps people get the hell out of Detroit.

The new bridge means people driving to Canada can avoid most of Detroit.

Another Bridge to Nowhere?

The Detroit-Windsor border crossing is one of the busiest border crossings in the world in money terms.  Add in the fact that the one existing bridge is owned by a crazy mean-spirited old coot, and it actually makes a ton of sense to build an alternative crossing.

I've visited Detroit many times, I had friends that lived in Ypsi for a few years. But I never truly realized how absolutely farked up it is.

Especially when the new bridge will have better freeway access on both sides of the border.

This is good and with any luck the old bridge won't collapse into river before the new one is done.

The new bridge is going to be one-way ..........out of Detroit

If I remember correctly there is a tunnel as well as the bridge. Not sure of the rules but they might not let trucks go through the tunnel. I am on the west side of the state and have gone thought once. If Canada wants to pay for most of it and build it... all good with me

Because the Ambassador Bridge is ancient and decrepit, smits.

Because that's what old guys do. How much will the life of the Koch brothers improve if they're able to make a few more millions by screwing over the employees of one of the companies they own? Not much but they'll do it anyway.

Yup.  What you said.  Canada is such an important trading partner that commercial traffic alone warrants another bridge.  And I'm not going to lose a lot of sleep over Moroun's reduction in revenue.  I'm sure he'll survive.

Thrakkorzog: If I remember correctly there is a tunnel as well as the bridge. Not sure of the rules but they might not let trucks go through the tunnel.

Yup. They used to allow truck traffic, but I think they stopped in the last 10 years. I used to cross there all the time (lived in US, worked in WIndsor) and I still prefer it to the Bridge.

The best time through was when I was behind a truck carrying a Dumpster that was just a little too tall and it threw sparks all the way through as it scraped the tunnel roof.

Fun fact: that bridge is actually the Chain of Rocks Bridge that carried Route 66 across the Mississippi from Madison, IL to St. Louis. It's now used as a pedestrian/bike trail bridge.

A lot of Escape from New York was filmed in East St. Louis, IL (which makes Detroit look like a nice place to live).

What they need to do is build the new bridge specifically to handle all of the truck traffic. Keep all passenger vehicles on the Ambassador and all the trucks on the new span.

Did I miss the part where the Ambassador Bridge has insufficient capacity?

Trucks are often backed up for hours waiting to cross. Yes, it has severely insufficient capacity.

Subby needs to do their homework:"One-quarter of all U.S.-Canada trade, which is the world's largest two-way trading relationship, crosses at Windsor-Detroit"

Considering that the total trade between Canada & the USA is about $600 billion a year, that comes out to about $150 billion dollars per year passing through Detroit & Windsor.

But hey, don't let that keep you from thinking of the city as "worthless" because there's not enough white people to soothe your racist insecurity.

I said a few days ago in another thread, but Detroit seems too far gone. I agreed to work in the highland park projects for some reason last Friday, and as a guy who has been going to concerts in the D for years, I was shocked at the conditions there. Harbage piled 10 ft high on the corners, people living under makeshift tents, every damn house of McNichol st in the projects have caved in roofs. The stores main ads outside are for bedbug spray. Everyone looks 3rd world desperate. The hardware, and corner carryout sells everything in affordable single serving sizes. Contractor screamed at a crew for staying after dark. Have to use buddy system to walk to the store. On top of that we seen a car chase with a dozen cops in persuit. They can't pay me enough to go back there. Very scary, and sad.

I have had to wait 3 hours as a car, the longest wait I can remember for trucks was in the 27 stationary miles range.  I wouldn't put it past Maddman Maroon to create backups and only allow his own trucks through.

I really think that Canada and the USA should pass a law that forbids felons from owning international boarder crossings.  I don't know if he is a felon, but he isn't far off.

I read it about a month ago. I couldn't put it down.
I live in Northwest Ohio, so I've spend a decent amount of time in and around Detroit. The area around the ballparks and some other tourist traps is nice, but once you go off the beaten path, well, "RoboCop" starts to look like a documentary.

I still don't understand that.  How can you have so much money that you can feel justified being such a dick/evil ass to make a minor amount more?

Charlie LeDuff was just on the Colbert Report.

The people of Detroit & Michigan WANT this bridge. One of Mouron's delaying tactics was to try to get a measure passed via statewide referendum that would have forced all international crossings to be approved by a statewide referendum before they could be built. Despite Mouron spending over $33 million on the campaign and the opposition spending almost nothing the measure was rejected by a huge margin. The only people who oppose it are the guys who own the current bridge. The reason Snyder has had so much trouble with the state legislature over this is the massive campaign contributions Mouron has made to a number of its members. Mouron has probably lost on the new bridge, but he's going to continue to fight because every day of delay is more money for him.

How does a private person own a bridge at a border crossing ?? I mean, if he gets pissed, can he just shut it, screwing up commerce big time ?

Don't forget the guy who spent millions on an ad campaign trying to mislead the public before the vote on approving a new bridge.

Word is that he's already working on filing another lawsuit in Washington DC to try to block it.
