I've also learned that what we called "pig tails" as a kid are actually fiddleheads. And that people eat them.

From what I've heard, they're supposed to be delicious. One of my friends just threw a fit on Facebook because she heard there was a very limited supply available at an organic food store, but they were all gone by the time she got there.

I've long-maintained that ANY vegetable is awesome if prepared properly. I'm a big fan of roasting.

Yep...the only thing I still have a little trouble with is alfalfa sprouts. It still seems weird to me because I grew up around alfalfa fields and I know it as hay. Whenever I see people eating it I always picture them as cows just munching away.

So, I've heard of 7 of the vegetables on the list. I don't know if that's because I'm old or whatever, but I don't think having heard of at least some of the vegetables on the list makes you a hipster.

Throw some fiddleheads in a stir fry for the last few minutes.  They add a nice crunch if you don't have snow peas, although can be slightly bitter.

Most of these veg are found at Farm Boy here in Canuckistan which is what I guess Whole Foods is in the States.  The freshness and quality is better than other stores and the price is on par so I have no issues with going there.   Pretty much just regular suburbanites in there, never notice any hipsters, although its not like I live in a trendy area.

Subby obviously has never been into an Asian market. Nearly all the vegetables on that list are common sights at most Asian markets I frequent.

Is this one of those lists that can be deslidafied? I've never actually saved one of those sites because I dont care about celebrities in bikinis or the most stylisg reality stars but this is a list I'd actually like to see.

Growing up in Maine, we would pick fiddleheads in the springtime before they opened up into ferns.
Steam or lightly boil, add butter and a bit of vinegar...food boner material.

My fiancé's father brings those home constantly. It's broccoli (or so he says) but I haven't tried it.

I like my veggies, but living in a vegan household that also includes someone with legit Coeliac (or however the heck you spell that) is next to impossible for someone who wants to enjy real food now and then.

/not allowed in the kitchen, because I'm an evil chicken killer (made mushroom, rice, and chicken for the fiancé one night, and now even the lady down the street knows this is a no chicken household)

Seriously, a fist sized sunchoke I roasted last week gave more gas than the time I went to I chili cook off and gorged for 4 hours on about 20 kinds of chili.

They really should market the broccoli/cauliflower cross as Fractal Broccoli or Mandelbrot.

I feel so out of the loop. I've heard of 4 of those, but only eaten one. (I might have tried fiddleheads too, I remember my roommate making them once or twice).

My grandfather used to eat dulse, dried. It was quite salty and I didn't realize you could cook with it. I would not recommend putting it in your mouth at all, really.

This is loquat. It is the fruit that is in season right now in the panhandle of Florida. Never heard of it before I moved here, but supposedly it's widely grown in Japan. The fruit is about as big a ping pong ball and it has big pits in it, but it is quite tasty--very sweet. I have four trees, they are not real tall but they put out about a five gallon bucket of fruit apiece each spring. And it's nice to have fresh fruit off the trees in the springtime.

I grow it in the garden but only knew the smaller variety.  Then I went to a friend's place and saw these huge ones.  The ones I'm used to get woody and bust open the heads if left to grow too large.  His were the size of softballs.  He explained it's a different variety and I made note of it and plan on planting it this spring.  Only problem is I can't remember what variety that happened to be!  I'll have to ask again.

Romanesco is delicious au gratin; the fractals hold the cheese.

The fiddleheads are carcinogenic, though tasty.

Minor correction--romanesco isn't so much a broccoflower as...well...a member of the general Brassica cultivar clade that includes broccoli, cauliflower and a few other vegetables.  (Species differentiation with the Brassica plants gets....VERY weird and complex at times.)  If memory serves me right, some recent genetic study has shown that romanesco is actually more related to cauliflower than broccoli (enough that it can be classified as a breed of cauliflower); it's actually a very old heritage variety, and brassica classification is squidgy enough that probably we shouldn't call it "cauliflower" or "broccoli" but as "romanesco" as it's really its own thing. :3

And I HAVE seen romanesco specifically marketed as "Fractal broccoli" and "Fractal cauliflower" in past (hell, that's how I actually got interested in trying to grow the stuff; haven't had a whole lot of luck finding it in local groceries) and I think one cultivar HAS been (informally, anyways) named for Benoit Mandelbrot :D

/of course, if I had enough time and romanesco seeds to make my own cultivar, I'd name it after someone a bit more obscure...Koch maybe (of the Koch curve, the fractal that actually has the most resemblance to romanesco) or Sierpinski :D

I have three of those so-called "unheard-of" vegetables in my fridge right now. Can't throw a rock in an upscale supermarket around here without hitting kohlrabi, cassava, sunchokes, or Chinese broccoli.

I had a large loquat tree in my back yard when I was growing up in Los Angeles.  I love the fruit; it's very sweet and has a rather unique flavor.  Not sure why it seems to be so under-appreciated, I never see it in stores and many people grow them only as an ornamental variety.

They're all still technically members of the same species, Brassica oleracaea, but yeah, Romanesco is grouped together with cauliflower and broccoflower in subspecies Botrytis. Broccoli is subspecies Italica. Brassica relationships are completely screwed up though, and hybrids abound. B. oleracaea is a lot like the variability in dog breeds: It gives us everything from broccoli to kale.

Yeah, cassava is not that obscure.

Only thing on that list I've eaten before was nopales, which are ok, but nothing special.

But, speaking of ingredients you might find in Mexican food (actual Mexican food, not Tex-Mex) but nowhere else, huitlacoche is pretty awesome.  It's a lot like a mushroom, both biologically and how it tastes.
