Highroller48: "Now the freaks are on television, the freaks are in the movies. And it's no longer the sideshow, it's the whole show. The colorful circus and the clowns and the elephants, for all intents and purposes, are gone, and we're dealing only with the freaks."

He and Williams were on an episode of The Tonight Show in one of Carson's last years on the show (Park Overall was the third guest).  For all the knocks on Williams, he and Winters were tuned into something hilarious that evening; Carson said it was one of the best shows he'd ever done, and his biggest contribution was to "shut up and get the hell out of the way."

I recognize him but I don't think I have ever seen a single film or TV show with him in it ....

Anyways, he was good and old, so that's nice.

kimwim: I'm the only one at work who even knows who he was. I feel fricken old. Damn.

Try mentioning Jack Benny, Red Skelton, Groucho Marx, the Bowery Boys. They put a tombstone on my desk and draped black crepe over my chair. But you know what? I'd rather be old and have grown up with yesterday's comics than be young with today's " funny " men. All trash talk straight from the cess pool.

Banned on the Run: I had always heard about It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World but never saw it until about a year ago.  That is some funny shiat.  49 years old and it still holds up well.

Watch it kids.  I'm sure Netflix will have it available.

lennavan: Jonathan Winters, who was known for his improv work that inspired many a contemporary stand-up comic including Robin Williams

There is no amount of good he could have possibly brought to the world to make up for that.

Yup. This is why I have you favorited as "douchebag", despite your occasional flashes of relative common sense.

Don't.

It's a great movie. One of the all-time great comedies.

But it hasn't aged well. It's much better in your memory than it will be on your screen.

2013-04-12 03:44:12 PM
One of the funniest segments I've ever seen on television took place a very long time ago. It was a 60 Minutes piece on Robin Williams... but for the entire last half of the segment, they turned Robin Williams and his good friend Jonathan Winters loose with a box of props. They'd go back and forth creating a balancing personality for each other's new character, then change almost mid sentence when a new prop came out. The two of them kept grabbing items and shifting into new characters while the producer, cameraman, and sound man could all be heard laughing hysterically in the background.

Mr. Winters had an amazing talent.

Not dead, just delivering a load to Yuma

I've been to Yuma. Same thing.

My father met him once while leaving a gun store somewhere near Ventura, CA.  My dad was leaving with a rifle and Winters was chatting with the staff.  He looked at my father and said, "There's a sniper on that building across the street with his sights on you."

My dad just looked at him and said, "I hope not, I still have money at the Winters National Bank."

Winters just looked at him and frowned and said, "I've got my eye on you."

Between him and Cosby and Mad magazine the world was a funny place for me when I was a kid.  I'll miss him a lot, but he left a lot of funny behind for all of us.

It doesn't get much weirder that Rod Steiger as Mr JoyBoy and his 500 lb mother clawing handfuls of meat out of a roast suckling pig and eating it as a crow pecks out of one of the pig's eyes.
