He was one of those who either really annoyed me (mostly in his later years) or made some of the funniest spots I can remember. I will definitely miss him, and I can't think of any current comedian whose material is as unique as his always was.

He stole that movie, and when you consider that cast involved, that is quite a feat.

"When I find that man, the yellow-belly who double crossed me, when I catch him, I just hope that you look away. That's all, I just really hope that you look away."

"Look, Pike. I 'm really sorry we left you out there. I wanted to pick you up, but my mother in law..."
"Listen. Anything you have to say about your mother in law, you don't have to explain to me. Like if you were to tell me that she was the star of a really crummy horror movie, I'd believe it."

Doing the math, it's still amazing to think he was just 37 in "It's a Mad..."

Then again he served a couple of years as a Marine in the Pacific during WWII and that tended to add 10+ years of looks to most men.

I am a devoted fan of dirty comics, but Jonathan Winters proved you didn't have to always hit the lowest bar to get the biggest laughs.

Along with Victor Borge, Winters was one of the great comedic icons of my childhood.

"Now the freaks are on television, the freaks are in the movies. And it's no longer the sideshow, it's the whole show. The colorful circus and the clowns and the elephants, for all intents and purposes, are gone, and we're dealing only with the freaks."  Q.F.T.

Very true, the pictures of my Grandfather as he graduated from basic training and 2 years later when he was discharged show a lot of aging and he was a radar man on a Destroyer Escort.

One of the funniest segments I've ever seen on television took place a very long time ago. It was a 60 Minutes piece on Robin Williams... but for the entire last half of the segment, they turned Robin Williams and his good friend Jonathan Winters loose with a box of props. They'd go back and forth creating a balancing personality for each other's new character, then change almost mid sentence when a new prop came out. The two of them kept grabbing items and shifting into new characters while the producer, cameraman, and sound man could all be heard laughing hysterically in the background.

Mr. Winters had an amazing talent.

I've been to Yuma. Same thing.

My father met him once while leaving a gun store somewhere near Ventura, CA.  My dad was leaving with a rifle and Winters was chatting with the staff.  He looked at my father and said, "There's a sniper on that building across the street with his sights on you."

My dad just looked at him and said, "I hope not, I still have money at the Winters National Bank."

Winters just looked at him and frowned and said, "I've got my eye on you."

And, despite the looming demise of the series, when he joined Mork & Mindy, some of the funniest parts were the times they just let him and Robin go nuts and riff off each other.  Sitting in Mindy's Jeep, and suddenly they were a big game hunter (Jonathan using a very snooty British accent) and his native guide (Robin, instead of a stereotypical broken English-speaking guy, a smart-ass with the voice of Rochester).  Using all sorts of firearms, escalating through bow and arrows, spears, rifles, elephant guns, finally breaking out a bazooka, and accidentally blowing up Marlon Perkins.  Those two should have put together at least one comedy album together, it would have been epic.

BKITU: addy2: Louisiana_Sitar_Club: "Longtime family friend Joe Petro III says Winters died Thursday evening at his Montecito, Calif., home of natural causes,"

"Montecito, Ca - Home of Natural Causes" is far and away the worst city slogan I have ever seen.

I've lived there. It's true.

He must have been set up very, very well. Montecito requires some serious f*ck-you money to afford. Oprah has a home there. Housing there ranges from "gated mansion" to "palatial estate."

lots like that and then the places that have been owned for years that sold for $30k as a friend of mine owns. I was able to rent there for $850 a month. Depends on what nook or cranny you can find there. But yeah, lots of money.

I know how you feel.  I work with a bunch of college students, whose knowledge is pretty much limited to reality television celebrities and whoever's the latest internet sensation.

mjohnson71: fat boy: Gonna watch It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World this weekend, who's left from the cast?

Doing the math, it's still amazing to think he was just 37 in "It's a Mad..."

Then again he served a couple of years as a Marine in the Pacific during WWII and that tended to add 10+ years of looks to most men.

That was Jonathon Winters comeback after he left the business to fight his depression. They took a risk that he wouldn't be able to pull it off.  He was hesitant to take the job.

Sid Caesar and Mickey Rooney

Honestly thought Caesar had died.

Worth watching. Deep weird.
It doesn't get much weirder that Rod Steiger as Mr JoyBoy and his 500 lb mother clawing handfuls of meat out of a roast suckling pig and eating it as a crow pecks out of one of the pig's eyes.
/Momma's little Joyboy loves piggy piggy
//Momma's little Joyboy loves suckling pig

"They tell me,
My dear uncle.
They tell me
You were hung,
With red protruding eyeballs
And black protruding tongue."

Winters/Steiger did Waugh's book justice
/merciless level of parody for `65 - in the same neighborhood as Strangelove

That's when Mork and Mindy jumped the shark. THe plot device bringing in Winters turned me off the show at the time.

I was also 15 at the time.

This.

Much like Jack Nicholson, Winters didn't need "act" crazy.

Huge Winters fan here.

The man was certifiably insane - and a comic genius. He could morph into any character literally on demand.

I always knew Winters was alive, RIP. But I thought for sure Sid Ceaser died a long time ago

I thought he had been dead for decades. Sad, but got about 20 years more than I would have bet on.

The first comedians whose names I learned - and this will show just how old I am - were the Smothers Brothers, Bill Cosby,...and Jonathan Winters.  He was a ray of delirious, demented sunlight in a dark world, and I know of no one who can fill his shoes.

2013-04-12 09:03:21 PM
Carl Reiner, Jerry Lewis, Stan Freberg (!) also on that list posted above... still, the MAD MAD movie was 50 years ago. They have a better longevity record than the Different Strokes cast

One of the smartest, and definitely the funniest, celebrity I ever had the pleasure of meeting.

Goodnight funnyman and a heartfelt thank you for all the cheer and sunshine you brought to our lives. If you see Charlie up there (doubtful at best) please kick him in the butt as you promised.

He'd have appreciated that headline

From the Smurfs 2 wiki: "This will be Jonathan Winters' final film after his death on April 12, 2013. It will be dedicated in his memory. "

Because we weren't sad enough.

I saw "Mad mad..." when I was a youngster. Many years later I was trying to remember the movie with the "W" in it. Then I saw it, and remembered most of it from the first time. The best part was Winter's line "he was ugly...I mean REAL ugly".

First, Paul Newman and George Carlin finished out their careers as cartoon characters, Why not Jonathan Winters?   I can see it now.  Eddy Murphy dies two weeks before Shrek 12 is released.  Tim Allen dies after production is finished on Toy Story 4.  (they spaced the sequels out further than the Shrek series)

Hot and Holy Hell! When did Johnny Winters become one of the undead?!? That is the most unhealthy live, human body I've ever seen. His farking hands are purple, his face red and he is skeletal and freaky looking. The years have not been kind... o.O
