Yeah, she's nowhere near as important as some loon nobody has heard of who happens to call himself a Tea Party member making a nutball statement that's then taken as the definitive example of what Tea Partiers, conservatives, libertarians, and Fox News are like.

Impeachment is not a part of this. What is at the core is a culture of corruption in this part of the country. In other parts as well, but it seems to ooze from all levels here and on a very much regular basis. This story is just the indictment du jour. Tomorrow, it will be a white guy, the next day some Muslim and don't think the Wiccans will be left out either. I am sure there is some witch brewing a theft of public money somewhere in Illinois.

I have to say one thing about Chicagoland corruption - it does not discriminate against who can be part of the club.

Frank N Stein: Why is everyone getting so defensive?

Come on guys, be honest. This is only news because of the connection of Obama to Wright.

I really don't mind when people are snarky and play the low card in political arguments, but it drives me up the wall when they play dumb about it.

"blah blah democrat party blah blah Barak HUSSEIN Obama"
"Why do you keep saying democrat party, it's usually referred to as the Democratic Party.  Are you making a critique about the party? Why do you keep throwing out his middle name?  Are you making a claim about his politics or religion or something?"
"No. whatever do you mean? I always call it the democrat party, and it's just his middle name, why is it weird to use his middle name?"

it's really only news because of Wright's past relationship to BO in that otherwise no one would have ever heard of him. However, that relationship made him a bit of a household name so therefore, this is more of a story because it the daughter of someone who is known than it would be if she was just the daughter of someone no one ever heard of.

It has nothing whatsoever to do with BO and not even much to do with Wright. However, the fact that Wright is famous makes this more of a national story than it would have been otherwise.

Saying Chicago is a haven for corruption is like saying NYC is a haven for crime; you're taking the distilled media reports from a population of 10million+ and comparing it to that of much smaller populations, when the reality is, statistically, you're much more likely to be victimized on any small-town mainstreet than in the middle of Times Square.

Per capita, Chicago corruption doesn't come close to places like the gulf states or the Dakotas.  In fact, when you rank all states by per-capita corruption, Illinois isn't even in the top 50%.

I realize that. But for me, I only clicked on the link because it's about a person in Chicago - where I live. I realize that some people (or many people) will make the Obama -Wright connection on this. But (as a conservative), my initial thought was that the connection was pretty weak. I go into this thread however, and I immediately see people on the defensive. I understand being defensive about it, because as I've admitted people will draw conclusions about Obama. But the way people on this site counter an argument (that hasn't even really been made yet, it should be noted) does nothing stroke their own ego hoping we all find funny the usual sarcastic Fark.com Stewart/Colbert hackjob impersonation trope. The meme spouting is at best not clever. At worst, it kills any chance of reasonable discourse.

And playing it dumb goes both ways. I don't know how many times I've seen people, in one thread, smugly inform someone that "you know, you really shouldn't say 'liberals' as if we're all just one block that blah blah blah it does not but cause divisiveness blah blah " and in another thread talk about how conservatives all all backwards white hicks from Alabama or some such thing.

Sorry for the rant. Now bring on the welcome_to_fark.jpgs.

ftfa:
The rankings were compiled by local reporters in each state, who researched 330 indicators of "Corruption Risk" across 14 categories of government. Those categories included access to information; campaign finance; accountability across the executive, legislative and judicial branches; budgeting; civil service management; procurement; internal auditing; lobbying disclosure; pension fund management; ethics enforcement; insurance commissions; and redistricting.

Without further knowing the method and numbers, this doesn't seem like a very good measurement.

What metric of corruption do you need that is not provided right there in the description of it's methodology?  It sounds like you don't think it's a good measurement because it fails to confirm your prejudices.

FWIW, I haven't found a single source that ranks states by corruption that puts Illinois in the even the top %50.  If you have one, please, by all means share it.

What other connection does it have to politics?

Wright is a household name because of his connection in the past with BO. That does not in any way mean that this story is meant to imply that this reflects badly on BO.

If tomorrow there's a story about Monica Lewinsky starting a new health food company and it appears on the politics tab, are you gonna fret that it was meant to imply the Bill Clinton is suddenly into ginkoba?

It's related to politics because of Wright and his relatively well known presence in recent American politics.

Frank N Stein: nocturnal001: Come on guys, be honest. This is only news because of the connection of Obama to Wright.

Well, when you see dumb shiat like that point it out, and I'd be happy to agree.

I think it's a stretch saying that Wright is a household name.  You may have a point if this was Emmanuel or somebody like that.  Wright had 15 mintues of fame when Obama was attacked for belonging to some crazy black church, since then we have heard nothing. That's fine really, if the charge is that Obama is shady because he was associated with Wright (he really wasn't that associated IIRC) and Wright's daughter looks dirty then etc.
