(BBC)   British humor is more dry and subtle than American humor. For instance, this British police officer Tweeted on Margaret Thatcher's death: "87 years too late," "marvelous stuff," "the world was a better place". Cheeky bugger   (bbc.co.uk) divider line 29

What do you want to bet that he is eligible to draw his entire salary notwithstanding his resignation.  Welfare state.

Wonder if he managed to keep his pension?

As for Cameron saying "I think the overwhelming sense across the country - and you can see it yesterday in the House of Commons - is that we are mourning the loss of someone who gave a huge amount to this country, an extraordinary leader.", er, no, not at all overwhelming. Just the Tories really. Labour and the Libs are just being polite.

Thatcher was awful. Just because we've decided to rewrite history and pretend that Reagan wasn't a piece of garbage, doesn't mean the Brits have to do the same to their leaders.

I'm no expert but...: Wonder if he managed to keep his pension?

Wonder no more; yes, he kept it by resigning before he was sacked.

Can you really be fired for saying negative things about a politician you don't like there?  Or is there more to the story, like using an official account or something?

Stay classy, dude!

You know, the funny thing is that people like this get erections and such thinking about how "shocking" they are to normal, sane, civilized people, but that's really not the case. After 50+ years of such derp, normal, sane, civilized people now expect people like this to act/talk/write like this. Ho hum. Yawn.

You're gonna have to find a new act, Alice. Setting yourself on fire might work....

It would fall in to the same category as slagging of your employer if you work for a private company.

When they reported that she died in a hotel, I pictured a sleazy, run down 'pay by the month' place. They found her on a soiled mattress with an empty bottle of cheap wine, some pills from a Mexican pharmacy, a Bugger's Monthly magazine and Hitachi super vibrator with custom 'turbo' appointments.
Just like the way they found Reagan.

Wait until all the hippies die off, and we can correct the books about Nixon to show what a great president he was.  Shame that such an awesome president was taken down over a meaningless campaign prank.

I have my doubts that 'dry-subtle' humour is what he was aiming for. Odd to see a police officer so opposed to Thatcher, given the myriad opportunities she provided for beating the shiat out of the working classes. Prior, of course, to rendering the notion of a working class utterly moot.

No, I don't think so.  It isn't a private company and Thatcher isn't the PM.  I suspect it was the statements about Cameron and the other current officials, unless there was something more to it.

Being glad an ex-politicians is dead doesn't seem like a legitimate reason to sack someone, unless it was doing it while on duty or using an official account, or something like that.

Sgt Scott had reportedly described news of the death as "marvellous stuff" and expressed a wish that the current prime minister, chancellor and home secretary were next.

That's probably what tipped this over the line from "offending certain sensibilities" to "fireable offense".

I'm not going to dance on anyone's grave. And saying stuff like what this cop tweeted is in pretty poor taste (though by itself I don't think it should be something that you can lose your job over). But I'm also not going to pretend that Margaret Thatcher doesn't have a pretty destructive legacy to answer for.

Ummm what's this now? I'm not what most would term a 'leftie' at least not politically.  And I don't recall a leftist push to correct the record about Nixon.

So...is that the joke?

It breaks my heart to see-and I cannot interfere-what is happening in our country today. This terrible strike, by the best men in the world, who beat the Kaiser's and  Hitler's armies and never gave in. It is pointless and we cannot afford that kind of thing. Then there is the growing division of Conservative prosperity in the south and the ailing north and  Midlands. We used to have battles and rows but they were quarrels. Now there is a new kind of wicked hatred that has been brought in by different types of people.

This, along with the generational spite-slagging that is well underway and will assume steamroller-potent proportions. Remember kids, the Beatles were a manufactured boy-band. Everyone was a hippie who eventually owned an oil company. There is not a single living adult born between 45 and 65 who did not compromise every whacked out value they ever held dear, for the sake of a new Beemer and some cool sneakers.

Who says the winners always write history?

I know, its not like the NUM bussed people around the country to beat those who were just trying to feed their families.

And people like subby continue to believe that the small snippet of stuff we get on PBS and BBC America is representative of everything Britain has to offer, and not the cream of the crop.

Thatcher was nasty, vicious and mean.  Blair learned much from her.
