The real question here is...why the fark is Iron Man opening earlier in the UK than here in the states? We farking INVENTED Iron Man! but the limeys get to see it first?! Not cool, I can understand them getting James Bond or Harry Potter Movies first, but Iron Man?

Well, it's happened before. JFK's death actually delayed the debut of Doctor Who by one day. Just like in the US, the BBC cancelled all programming to follow the story, and DW was supposed to premiere that night.

This, so much this.

An American Character, based in an American City, staring American actors, made by an American Company, and the UK gets it first. It would be like running the new Doctor Who episodes on BBC America three weeks before anyone in the UK gets to see them.

The US Market is no longer the only market that matters in the world.  These movies are made for a worldwide audience, filmed overseas, etc.  Overseas audiences are more likely to download if it doesn't get released there early.  A big overseas run just fuels hype for the US as well.

The overseas audience is also less discriminating.  Why do movies like Battleship and Die Hard 5 get released?  They make 500 million and 300 million dollars overseas.

The US is no longer important, just another country.

Given that your metrics are "US" and "other" when discussing revenue, I'd say that it's still quite important.

No Time To Explain: How would delaying the movie make anyone care more about Thatcher?

/and more importantly, why the 1/2 month gap from UK to North American release?

The studios are planning on embedding a deadly virus that kills torrent downloaders and the two week delay is the best way to ensure people keep at it even after the deaths become apparent.

This is also the plot of this week's episode of Doctor Who.

If only there was a movie that could prove your hypothesis wrong....maybe one with puppets...

Does GMT have any bearing on your thought process in this matter?

GMT does not account for TWO WEEKS difference.

so, what I'm hearing is that I'll be able to download it before it premieres in the US.  Ai-ight.
