She pointed out how the Miss America Pageant has long been a leading source for college scholarships for women in America. "That's ridiculous," Steinem said.

Citation please?   Maybe in the 50s, but, she makes it sound like that is still the case.   I find it hard to believe that Miss America scholarships are the majority of women's scholarships, or even the plurality, although, I guess maybe that might still be true.

That's what the Miss America organization claims.  However, since they only handed out 45 million last year, it probably means they are just the largest single source of scholarships dedicated to women, not the majority of them.

Of course, in Gloria Steinem's world, scholarships that aren't based on sex don't count.

I think the only people that care about Kim putting on the pounds during her pregnancy are E! and the gossip rags. The rest of us could probably give a single fark. My take on it is that Kim is trying to make a non issue an issue just because her AW nature thinks it should be.

"My overwhelming response is this is not newsworthy," Steinem said before adding, "It's certainly true that women's bodies are not public property for comment."

But this is Kardashian, I pointed out. Hadn't she brought all the hyperscrutiny upon herself by flaunting her body around the way she's made a career of doing?

"That's probably true," Steinem agreed, then pointed out, "If men were rewarded in the same way for flaunting their bodies, they'd be flaunting them, too."

Right, that's why Ryan Gosling and Magic Mike bag groceries for a living and commentary on Chris Christie is confined to his policy positions.

All in all I thought her responses were pretty good.

When the author pointed out that Kim K had sought out attention, Steinem didn't say "She didn't ask to have the dreaded Male Gaze forced upon her by the Patriarchy!" or some such crap, she agreed with the point.

She didn't call Obama a rape-enabler for complementing Kamala Harris, but correctly pointed out it was an error, and pretty minor in the grand scheme of offenses.

As prominent feminists go, she's pretty damn reasonable.

Gloria Steinem is one of the good ones. She's intelligent, reasonable, and isn't prone to histrionic fits when things don't go exactly her way. She supports women without vilifying men, a rare trait among the current third-wave feminists of today.

"I think the reason she got some criticism is because she's successful. In order to be loved and appreciated, women have to fail." As an example, she pointed out how Clinton's likability ratings improved after she failed to get the Democratic presidential nomination in 2008. "In the classic sense of masculinity and feminity, women are not supposed to be successful," Steinem said."

What a load.  So if Clinton was reduced to living in a trailer park, everyone would like her even more?

If Kim Kardashian didn't make her career to be on as many mag covers as possible I might feel an iota of sympathy. If Kim really wanted to avoid the publicity and the press don't you think she could do it?  Does Gloria really think that Kim, and her agent, has no idea what's going on? Wait until after the kid is born and then the magazines will be full of "Kim's new body!" and "You too can go on Kim's after-baby diet!" and the inevitable books that will follow.

Also Gloria seems to have develop some memory loss about Hilary Clinton's campaign. People didn't like her because her campaign first had a smug aura of inevitably. Then when it seemed that Barack should be and was going to be the nominee she kept fighting past the point where everyone not named Clinton said give it up. The totally unnecessary fight for superdelegates nearly up until the convention.

Yesterday it looked like pretty much all the supermarket rags were rippin' her good.

Just from the covers the consensus is that she's gaining as much weight as she can in order to get the maximum payday from whatever weight loss program is selected.  Not that I give an ounce of credence to any of these publications, but in this case it's probably pretty close to the truth, if not dead on.

Cue the inevitable "don't rag on her, she's pregnant" replies. (And that's assuming anyone here notices this post, which is rare)

You know, what Steinham said wasn't quite as stupid as I thought it would be, but you made some excellent points. Actually a few people have in this thread.

And the whole Hillary is more popular because she "failed" line of reasoning I find specious as well. Hillary is popular because she's perceived as tough, smart and effective - the opposite of what Gloria is suggesting. Her public opinion polling jumping around during the primary isn't something you can base the kind of inference Gloria did on it - those polls will wax and wane on any given day due to a jillion different factors. There's a lot of noise when elections are ongoing...

From Miss America's website : "The Miss America Organization is one of the nation's leading achievement programs and the world's largest provider of scholarship assistance for young women. Last year, the Miss America Organization and its state and local organizations made available more than $45 million in cash and scholarship assistance. "

Steinem might say that's "ridiculous", but it's pretty impressive to me.

Also impressive is that they have $45 million to give, despite as of late having issues with even keeping the main event telecast from dropping on to some unknown cable channels (I think it was on CMTV for a few years or something like that).

Hillary's campaign ran on being a coronation parade. My first actual post after years of lurking on fark was the explosion of the Death Star when Hillary had to face the music on SuperTuesday. It was glorious. Every piece of shiat this Tracy Flick had to put up with to make the presidency something that she DESERVED, dammit, made her bitter tears taste so sweet. Does anyone else remember her talking about estates that count, and it amounted to only the states she won? Still trying to get her minions to dump Obama on any technicality? Saying, black knight style, that Obama, winning, should agree to be her VP?

I imagined she would hop on her feminist soap box and start being all anti-male hostility of raging PMS, but instead she was indeed reasonable, making it difficult to be against her.  Okay so she wins the battle.  I have to say her responses were pretty damned reasonable.

Actually, I recall most of us ended up bashing Kim not because she was pregnant, but because...well, she's Kim Kardashian.

I don't know what the tabloids are doing, and I don't care. I do know that it's a shame such a beautiful body is attached to a Defcon 1 grade AW.

I'm deeply disappointed that Steinem's hardcore (pardon the pun) anti-pornography views weren't a part of the dialog.  After all, Kim Kardashian began her sex-object career via XXX porn.

I assumed that anyone white knighting this AW on Fark is just trolling, or at best playing some sort of twisted, poorly communicated, devils advocate.

Do I think it's wrong to make fun of a pregnant woman who puts on excessive weight?  Of course!
Do I think that the delicious irony of an AW being trashed in tabloids supersedes such an injustice?  You better farking believe I do!

/I love chubby girls.  Some guys get way too rilled up when you make fun of the type of girl they like.  That might explain the KK whiteknighting in previous threads as well.
