museamused: El Farko: You ever do that thing where you sing Amazing Grace to the music of the Giliigan's Island theme song?

Ever do that thing where you sing The Rime of the Ancient Mariner to Gilligan's Island theme song?

Ever do that thing where you sing the Gilligan's Island theme song to the tune of The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald?

So many good ones mentioned here.  Agree that best Bass line is Barney Miller.
For a newer theme, I like Mad Men.  It matches the graphics which matches the theme of the show perfectly.  Falling, out of control, Don Draper that ends up on a couch, coolly smoking a cigarette.

Honorable mention:

It really picked up during the closing credits.

I see no one has mentioned the Dick Van Dyke Show theme.  Or Fame.

And the same guy who wrote the original Star Trek theme wrote the just as memorable theme to The Waltons.

And how embarrassing is it I forgot to mentioned Frasier earlier?  Scrambled eggs all over my face.  What is a boy to do?

Current shows I think are Park & Rec and Justified.  Good theme music.

There's no kind of atmosphere
I'm all alone, more or less
Let me fly far away from here
Fun, Fun, Fun, in the Sun, Sun, Sun

I want to lie, Shipwrecked and comatosed
Drinking fresh mango juice
Goldfish shoals, nibbling on my toes
Fun, Fun, Fun in the Sun, Sun, Sun
Fun, Fun, Fun in the Sun, Sun, Sun

Keep movin', movin', movin',
Though they're disapprovin',
Keep them doggies movin' Rawhide!
Don't try to understand 'em,
Just rope and throw and grab 'em,
Soon we'll be living high and wide.
Boy my heart's calculatin'
My true love will be waitin', be waiting at the end of my ride.

Move 'em on, head 'em up,
Head 'em up, move 'em out,
Move 'em on, head 'em out Rawhide!
Set 'em out, ride 'em in
Ride 'em in, let 'em out,
Cut 'em out, ride 'em in Rawhide.

catchow: I was channel surfing not long ago and landed on a classic TV network (not TV Land, but another one lurking in the digital sub-channel realm) showing a Beverly Hillbillies marathon. What struck me as odd is that the shows did NOT feature the classic "Ballad of Jed Clampett" for the openers/closers, just some very generic-sounding banjo bluegrass. The only thing I could think of was, maybe the estates of Flatt and/orScruggs didn't give their permission for re-release? But why? Anyway, for me it made the old shows slightly less fun, esp. the closing credits sequence...I fondly remember "waving back" to Granny etc. when I was just a tot and always feel the urge to do it again every time I see it.

Whatever station that was airing it was probably showing some of the episodes that fell into public domain. When a myriad of companies released those episodes on DVD, the opening music was changed due to "The Ballad of Jed Clampett" still being under copyright. The MPI and CBS/Paramount DVDs and the current airings on MeTV have the original theme intact. Think RTV airs the public domain episodes.

My list of top 3 old tv show tunes to have dirty pr0n sex to:
Gilligan's Island theme
I Dream of Genie theme
the fight theme music from original Trek

Seriously, you're all doing hip thrusts to those themes right now and tell me they don't make awesome pr0n music...
:-)

Snarfangel: How could I forget the theme from Stellvia,  Asu e No Brilliant Road, and the theme to Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Inner Universe.

/What do you mean, anime series don't count?

Rassekali ternii i mlechnye puti
Ne znaet schast'ya tol'ko tot,
Kto ego zova ponyat' ne smog...{one transcription, Russian is a bit difficult.}

You sir, are an Oregoinian and a kick-ass anime theme lover and I consider my new 2nd best friend!
I enjoyed the opening and end themes from Dai-Guard, I highly recommend you scope that out.

victrin: How was Game of Thrones not even a contender?

The theme alone is what caused my husband to watch the show. I had read the books years ago and was very excited about watching the show, but he hadn't read them and had no interest. He's more space ships than swords and dragons. Anyway, the show started, I'm watching in the living room and turn the sound up and bam, that awesome music starts. Halfway through the theme he comes in from the other room where he was playing and said:
"Is this that Throne show?"
"Yup"
"With a theme like this, it has to be epic!"
He's been a fan ever since and is now part way through Book 3 - where Jamie has his unfortunate "accident".

While I really like the Game of Thrones opening theme, they're stretching the melody way too much recently in order to cram all of the major plot locations in the intro.

2013-04-12 07:10:38 PM
I was recently watching a rerun of King of Queens and there was a montage of Doug doing something while the theme song of Mr. Belvedere played in the background. I hadn't heard it in years and was instantly reminded of how much I loved that theme song.

Streaks on the china,

never mattered before,
who cares.

When you dropped kicked your jacket
As you came through the door,
No one glared.

But sometimes things get turned around
And no one's spared.

All hands look out below
There's a change in the status quo.
Gonna need all the help that we can get.

According to our new arrival
Life is more than mere survival
We just might live the good life yet.

HopScotchNSoda: My favourite version of the Doctor Who theme was either the one from 2007 or the one from 2008

Ayup. I watched a Tennant episode the other night and found that I like that version better than the new one. I think they took out the violins.

I'd also nominate the theme from Stargate: SG-1

Probably not the best, but still memorable:
Alice (notable for three different themes as the show aged, all sung by the lead actress)
Baretta
Happy Days
Dead Like Me   (for using a toy piano (or synth version therof)
Patty Duke Show (for backstory)
Partridge Family (backstory)
Scooby Doo
S.W.A.T. (martial but funky)
Tonight Show Theme (Carson era)
Twin Peaks (opening bass line)
Woody Woodpecker (earworm factor)
X Files (earworm factor)
