Barnstormer: Didn't the theme to Welcome Back Kotter actually hit the charts fro John Sebastian?

Love that one, too - so many good ones, which makes me all the sadder that now-a-days most shows are foregoing the 'theme song' altogether. Kudos to the new Hawaii 5-0 and the new Dallas for keeping (for the most part) their respective themes intact.

I am disappointed in the lack of cartoon themes on that list.  The Flintstones?  Jonny Quest?  Scooby Doo?

I've always thought Sanford and Son was the best.   Gilligan is a silly choice, though.

The theme to Garry's show.
Garry called me up and asked if I would right his theme song.
I'm almost halfway finished,
How do you like it so far,
How do you like the theme to Garry's Show.

This is the theme to Garry's Show,
The opening theme to Garry's show.
This is the music that you hear as you watch the credits.
We're almost to the part of where I start to whistle.
Then we'll watch "It's Garry Shandling's Show".

This was the theme to Garry Shandling's show.

The original Battlestar Galactica had a nice powerful, big production theme to it for television show.  Hawaii Five-0 did as well.

Is there any kudos for the ending of The Hulk?  Some bad guy gets his after crossing the wrong green guy, his car is flipped over, revenge-like justice is served and everything is set to normal, yet the piano music comes in and David Banner is stealing clothes from clotheslines and leaving money and then hitch hiking onto the next town and we're all reduced to tears.  That's worth something.  Right?

It's been decades since I've seen an episode but The Facts of Life is still stuck in my brain.

I would throw "Hill Street Blues" into the mix.

I think Gilligan's Island is good as it sets up the show.  You wouldn't have to have seen any episode to understand the plot once you have listened to the theme song.

Sanford and Son has been my ringtone for a long time! People always crack up when they hear it. I'm not sure if the song is just that silly sounding or if it makes them think of the show, but it always gets a laugh.

Hardcastle and McCormick had the best theme song, too bad most people don't remember the show.  Gummy Bears, Inspector Gadget, Dukes of Hazard, Greatest American Hero were all great as well.

That also has the virtue of giving the show's backstory, like Gilligan's Island and The Brady Bunch.

I loved the 30 Rock where Tracy pays the NY Philharmonic to play it for 3 hours.

Long ago when I was in basic training we were marching. Marching. marching, and one day the cadre calls for a jody so I bust the Gilligan's Island them. Of course, EVERYONE knows the lyrics so all I said was, "Just sit right back..." and immediately the whole squadron was loud and thunderous and in time. The cadre was pleased with the unity and enthusiasm so no asses were kicked.

For most people the Peter Gunn theme is a Video Game theme not a TV theme.  The show only ran for 3 seasons and was largly forgotten until Spy Hunter came out.

I've always loved Gilligan's Island theme.  But it's a three-way tie for me.  Sesame Street, Courtship of Eddies Father and Gilligan's Island.  Yep... can't choose a favorite.

For original instrumentals:
Dragnet

For adaptation of a classical piece:
Theme from the Huntley-Brikinkley Report

For songs that had lyrics but never used them:
Star Trek
I Love Lucy (though Desi does sing it in one episode)

For those with Lyrics:
All in the Family

For those who explain what is going on in the show:
Gilligan's Island
The Brady Bunch
Beverly Hillbillies

When Danger Man was re-broadcast in the US, they used Johnny Rivers' "Secret Agent Man" as the theme song.  If it is not THEbest TV show theme song, it's definitely one of the best.

No, for most people the Peter Gunn theme is incidental music during The Blues Brothers.

Of the 32 examples of mostly trite nonsense they pulled outta their ass to vote on, Taxi is my favorite. But the television theme I love best is:

Jument: It's been decades since I've seen an episode but The Facts of Life is still stuck in my brain.

Alan Thicke had a way of writing theme songs that could bore into your head and stay there... forever.  I haven't seen an episode of Diff'rent Strokes in 20+ years, but I can still hear that one in my head word for word.

Staying home sick from school watching Gilligan's Island was a treat.  Theme song is good but there are better, Barney Miller, Hawaii 5-0 and the original Battle Star Galactica.

Gilligan's Island was full of veteran actors who seem to exactly fit the role, including Bob Denver as Gilligan.

Which reminds me..I've always wanted to spoof the show and have the character Gilligan killed in fourth episode.  Maybe a guy in the gorilla suit could take Gilligan's place, or one a robot.

In Mediocre Korea Jong-Un plays Gilligan.  He doesn't last after threatening to nuke Yankee Imperialists.

Not if you were only 5 years old when the movie came and you did not have HBO in 81 and 82 then your first exposure to the Peter Gunn theme was at the bowling alley video arcade at age 7.

So many bad suggestions in this thread (but a few good ones too). Again I ask:

browntimmy: Why is the criteria, "What sticks in your head the best?" instead of, "Which is actually the best piece of music"? Do we still hold respect for "Who Let the Dogs Out?"
