The "best".... according to the kind of people who post comments on Yahoo articles.

If not for that, I might wonder why this wasn't even among the contestants.

I was going to post something disparaging about your age, but the fact that you're military (hence volunteer for my lazy ass), and more importantly, having to live in Florida, has caused me to reconsider. Instead I'll just say "thanks for your service and don't hate your country for making you be in Florida."

Sherwood Schwartz wanted the theme song to give a first time viewer the complete back story of the show.  In about a minute, you know exactly what's going on.

40 years later, people still remember all the words, too.  I suppose that makes it the greatest theme song ever.

I would agree. Mike Post and Pete Carpenter were the kings of TV themes. They wrote some great ones....althought Lalo Schifrin (Mission Impossible) and Richard Markowitz (Wild, Wild West) are contenders.

2013-04-12 10:42:27 AM
Boy, did it.

"The popular theme song, "Welcome Back", written and recorded by former Lovin' Spoonful frontman John Sebastian, became a No. 1 hit in the spring of 1976. The show was originally going to be called Kotter, but that was changed because of the theme song lyrics. Sebastian has said he tried to find a more general theme for the song after being unable to find any reasonable rhymes for Kotter.

Sebastian performed the song on Saturday Night Live (April 24, 1976 - Season 1, Episode 18), and memorably flubbed the opening lyrics."

Staying home sick from school watching Gilligan's Island was a treat.  Theme song is good but there are better, Barney Miller, Hawaii 5-0 and the original Battle Star Galactica.

Gilligan's Island was full of veteran actors who seem to exactly fit the role, including Bob Denver as Gilligan.

Which reminds me..I've always wanted to spoof the show and have the character Gilligan killed in fourth episode.  Maybe a guy in the gorilla suit could take Gilligan's place, or one a robot.

browntimmy: So many bad suggestions in this thread (but a few good ones too). Again I ask:

browntimmy: Why is the criteria, "What sticks in your head the best?" instead of, "Which is actually the best piece of music"? Do we still hold respect for "Who Let the Dogs Out?"

Come on, Rossini's  William Tell Overture from the Lone Ranger has stood the test of time!

Meh.  In that era it would have to be the themes from "Get Smart" and "The Munsters" for just the sheer surf-funk.  The "Addams Family" was way better than Gilligan's too.  For a true ear worm, look to the old "Batman" theme.

Henry Kaiser Band covered the Andy Griffith theme ("The Fishing Hole") about 25 years ago; the vocals are such that you're convinced it's summertime and when you get home, there'll be a fresh pie waiting for dessert, but instead of Aunt Bee, the gal with the pie is a Malibu 9.

This live version will make you look at Mayberry in a whole new light.

Alan Thicke had a way of writing theme songs that could bore into your head and stay there... forever.  I haven't seen an episode of Diff'rent Strokes in 20+ years, but I can still hear that one in my head word for word.

Amusement: Staying home sick from school watching Gilligan's Island was a treat.

[s22.postimg.org image 636x360]

In Mediocre Korea Jong-Un plays Gilligan.  He doesn't last after threatening to nuke Yankee Imperialists.

I LIKE this... instead of Gilligan's Island it could be Lil Kim's Island...  Lil Kim convinces the professor to make weapons instead of silly gadgets to make life more comfortable on the island or things to help them get rescued... he takes the Howell's money... let's them starve in a work camp...  Ginger obviously represents the frivolities of the American lifestyle (fame and money for being attractive, not for hard work)... the skipper probably represents China, always trying to control best Korea .. eventually they all get blown up by a foreign power... with a laugh track...

Retrocrush lists the "Gilligan's Island theme" at tied for second in the top 100 (http://www.retrocrush.com/tvthemes/1-25.html). They have a point that telling the complete back story (it tied with "Brady Bunch" which also managed it) in a short intro put them so high.

From memory, notables missing from the thread are "Taxi" and "The Young and the Restless (Nadia's Theme)".

CSS...I was channel surfing not long ago and landed on a classic TV network (not TV Land, but another one lurking in the digital sub-channel realm) showing a Beverly Hillbillies marathon. What struck me as odd is that the shows did NOT feature the classic "Ballad of Jed Clampett" for the openers/closers, just some very generic-sounding banjo bluegrass. The only thing I could think of was, maybe the estates of Flatt and/orScruggs didn't give their permission for re-release? But why? Anyway, for me it made the old shows slightly less fun, esp. the closing credits sequence...I fondly remember "waving back" to Granny etc. when I was just a tot and always feel the urge to do it again every time I see it.

Even Three's company is one that stuck due to it's tackiness.

Then you have the memorable tunes that just a couple of notes and most people knows what it is..

Knight Rider, The Bob Newhart show, Airwolf, and who can listen to Frank Sinatra's Love and Marriage without Al and Peggy jumping to mind.  Heck even The Facts of Life should be on this list.

Oh, as I said, nothing really negative to say about Elizabeth, she is quite attractive, but let's not compare her to Barbara, they are completely different styles in many ways, and while one would probably claim to crawl through broken glass for Elizabeth in her prime, she still had more of a girl next door beauty.

Barbara was the nymph, a height in beauty that even today, few women could dare claim such of level of pure perfection of beauty.

We've got nothing better to do
Than watch T.V. and have a couple of brews

Wait a minute! My T.V. set doesn't work!

What are we gonna do tonight? This isn't fair!

Best ever (EVAR!) has to be Tom Waits singing Way Down in the Hole for The Wire, season 2.

From the 60's, I would pick the Mission Impossible theme. Do the themes from My Three Sons and I Dream of Jeannie have the same chord progressions? Maybe others too, is it a do-wop turnaround? The theme from The Odd Couple is catchy.

Here's an annoying earworm: sing the lyrics to Amazing Grace to the Gilligan's Island tune.

So many good ones mentioned here.  Agree that best Bass line is Barney Miller.

catchow: I was channel surfing not long ago and landed on a classic TV network (not TV Land, but another one lurking in the digital sub-channel realm) showing a Beverly Hillbillies marathon.

Whatever station that was airing it was probably showing some of the episodes that fell into public domain. When a myriad of companies released those episodes on DVD, the opening music was changed due to "The Ballad of Jed Clampett" still being under copyright. The MPI and CBS/Paramount DVDs and the current airings on MeTV have the original theme intact. Think RTV airs the public domain episodes.

victrin: How was Game of Thrones not even a contender?

The theme alone is what caused my husband to watch the show. I had read the books years ago and was very excited about watching the show, but he hadn't read them and had no interest. He's more space ships than swords and dragons. Anyway, the show started, I'm watching in the living room and turn the sound up and bam, that awesome music starts. Halfway through the theme he comes in from the other room where he was playing and said:
"Is this that Throne show?"
"Yup"
"With a theme like this, it has to be epic!"
He's been a fan ever since and is now part way through Book 3 - where Jamie has his unfortunate "accident".

2013-04-12 07:03:08 PM
While I really like the Game of Thrones opening theme, they're stretching the melody way too much recently in order to cram all of the major plot locations in the intro.

2013-04-12 07:10:38 PM
I was recently watching a rerun of King of Queens and there was a montage of Doug doing something while the theme song of Mr. Belvedere played in the background. I hadn't heard it in years and was instantly reminded of how much I loved that theme song.

Streaks on the china,

never mattered before,
who cares.

When you dropped kicked your jacket
As you came through the door,
No one glared.

But sometimes things get turned around
And no one's spared.

All hands look out below
There's a change in the status quo.
Gonna need all the help that we can get.

According to our new arrival
Life is more than mere survival
We just might live the good life yet.

StrandedInAZ: I was recently watching a rerun of King of Queens and there was a montage of Doug doing something while the theme song of Mr. Belvedere played in the background. I hadn't heard it in years and was instantly reminded of how much I loved that theme song.

Streaks on the china,

never mattered before,
who cares.

When you dropped kicked your jacket
As you came through the door,
No one glared.

But sometimes things get turned around
And no one's spared.

All hands look out below
There's a change in the status quo.
Gonna need all the help that we can get.

According to our new arrival
Life is more than mere survival
We just might live the good life yet.

I should want to cook Brocktoon a simple meal, but I shouldn't want to cut into him, to tear the flesh, to wear the flesh, to be born unto new worlds where his flesh becomes my key.

I was always partial to the Underdog song.  Here covered by The Blanks (Ted's band from scrubs).   Skip ahead to 0:53 to get to the theme proper:   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RNiGeKzc-98

peterthx: MOGGEE: Wellon Dowd: Dastardly Scoundrel: IMHO, Dawn Wells was just about the most insanely cute, girl-next-door type to ever grace our living rooms.

Innocent, girl-next-door.
