The "best".... according to the kind of people who post comments on Yahoo articles.

If not for that, I might wonder why this wasn't even among the contestants.

/some say those Yahoo commenters have the collective intellectual prowess of a bowl of cole slaw
//and that they're lamer and weaker than a heavy metal band going to group therapy

That's like the equivalent of voting for the Bee Gees' "Stayin' Alive" as greatest song of all time. Good job, Yahoo TV users.

What book is that? Things that Suck?

Gilligan's Island a decent choice, but I would choose Beverly Hillbillies and Hawaii Five-0.  Kind of surprised that neither was even in the poll.

I was going to post something disparaging about your age, but the fact that you're military (hence volunteer for my lazy ass), and more importantly, having to live in Florida, has caused me to reconsider. Instead I'll just say "thanks for your service and don't hate your country for making you be in Florida."

Sherwood Schwartz wanted the theme song to give a first time viewer the complete back story of the show.  In about a minute, you know exactly what's going on.

40 years later, people still remember all the words, too.  I suppose that makes it the greatest theme song ever.

This is the theme to Garry's Show,
The theme to Garry's show.
Garry called me up and asked if I would right his theme song.
I'm almost halfway finished,
How do you like it so far,
How do you like the theme to Garry's Show.

This is the theme to Garry's Show,
The opening theme to Garry's show.
This is the music that you hear as you watch the credits.
We're almost to the part of where I start to whistle.
Then we'll watch "It's Garry Shandling's Show".

This was the theme to Garry Shandling's show.

I liked the themes to M*A*S*H, Cheers, Bosom Buddies ("My Life") and Grand  better (though Grand is too short).

/with the words, of course, not the instrumental versions.
//I'll probably think of other songs in a minute.

The only virtue of the Gilligan's Island theme is that it makes Emily Dickinson poems sound really, really silly. And even that grows tiresome real damn quick.

Best version of this (IMHO - and I was a regular viewer) was when the Turtles guested: "We're almost to the part; where we begin to bah-bah" and then "Bah, bah, bah, bah, bah ... (from Happy Together)."

Can't believe I found this :http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mcdy9CjZ6B8. I guess they really do have everything...

Why is the criteria, "What sticks in your head the best?" instead of, "Which is actually the best piece of music"? Do we still hold respect for "Who Let the Dogs Out?"

I'm still trying to decide which show's theme had the best bass line. It's down to Barney Miller versus Seinfeld.

Didn't the theme to Welcome Back Kotter actually hit the charts fro John Sebastian?

BBT is s pretty good one (even better if you listen to the whole song).  Shooting for something a little older, I'd go with Fresh Prince.  I've watched maybe 5 episodes of that show, and I still catch myself singing the theme song to this day.

I would agree. Mike Post and Pete Carpenter were the kings of TV themes. They wrote some great ones....althought Lalo Schifrin (Mission Impossible) and Richard Markowitz (Wild, Wild West) are contenders.

2013-04-12 10:42:27 AM
Boy, did it.

"The popular theme song, "Welcome Back", written and recorded by former Lovin' Spoonful frontman John Sebastian, became a No. 1 hit in the spring of 1976. The show was originally going to be called Kotter, but that was changed because of the theme song lyrics. Sebastian has said he tried to find a more general theme for the song after being unable to find any reasonable rhymes for Kotter.

Sebastian performed the song on Saturday Night Live (April 24, 1976 - Season 1, Episode 18), and memorably flubbed the opening lyrics."

El Farko: You ever do that thing where you sing Amazing Grace to the music of the Giliigan's Island theme song?

Yes! I even posted that on the yahoo article. All you yahoo-poster-bashers: yeah I post on yahoo but I still agree with your basic opinion. As soon as I saw the winner was "Gilligan" I said to myself, "Yeah but this is yahoo..."

Reading all these comments is starting a BUNCH of those endless tape recordings in the brain where you can't stop hearing a certain song....I'm reliving all of the 1970's. Too much of a good thing.

Pshaw.
The best is the intro to '60 Minutes'.

// tick, tick, tick

Fun fact, that was not the original theme.

/and how can "The Fall Guy" not be in the best 32 of all time

Greatest American Hero
The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
MASH
Doctor Who
Deep Space Nine
Mystery Science Theater 3000
Firefly

All better than the theme to Gilligan's Island

...also, Hawaii 5-0, and  any "Quinn Martin Production" (Barnaby Jones, Mannix, Cannon, etc.) All had great themes.
