I think Fred will make the cut, and I wouldn't put it past him to be in the top 5 when all is said and done.

My office runs a pool where a snake draft occurs and you draw a position on the Masters.org leaderboard after the second round is over. This year, I have the players listed at #3 and #34 -- after that, it's unlikely a winner will emerge.

If I end up with Sergio after today, I'd rather be flayed.

I'm just here to see the Tiger haters recite their dwindling list...

Tiger is done!

Tiger won't win another tournament
!

Tiger has Phil in his head, he won't be able to win with Phil in the field!

Tiger won't win a lot!

Tiger is ok again, but he's not a top ten golfer anymore!

Tiger will never be number one again!

Tiger will never win another major!

Tiger won't break Jack's record!

So, we're down to two now. Maybe not this week but I'd bet my left nut he wins another major at some point. Whether or not he breaks Jack's record is sort of immaterial now. No one is gonna break Cy Young's record either, but he wasn't the greatest pitcher of all time. Different eras. Tiger's place in history is pretty secure at this point. But he really should be a better tipper. That's shameful.

PowerSlacker: Will Sergio melt down?

I used to actively root against Sergio because he was suuuuuuch a poor sport. His blaming everyone but himself at the British was just horrible and the way he used to go on and on about how he was younger than Tiger so hadn't won as much yet, etc. just reeked of sour grapes. But now that he's matured a bit and developed some humility I'm kind of rooting for him. Dude has put up some spectacular rounds at Augusta before. i wouldn't count him out.

I don't think so.  That is the record Tiger has wanted since he started.  It's really THE record to beat.  If he doesn't beat Jack's record, then it's not set in stone he's the best of all time.

Bullshiat. On both counts. And you know it. You've been involved in more than one schadenfreudish "tiger is done' - 'he'll never win again' threads.

same here.  How awesome would it be to see sergio and tiger in the last pair on sunday?  as much as i want tiger to get the majors record, it'd be hard to pull against sergio.  especially since he's not all whiny anymore.

Absolutely.

Oh maybe not, not that I think it matters that much. Jack had some great foils but the bottom half of his fields were a bunch of trunk slammers. If you apply any sabermetrics to the full fields at all no sane person would tell you that Tiger's fourteen aren't a tougher achievement than Jack's eighteen. Frankly, I don't think he gets there - he missed some key years and I think he'll tweak the knee again eventually. I also think if Jack had played in this era he wouldn't have gotten there either. It's just a silly what if anyway. I'm a huge Jack fan and have been forever.

I have a masters party every year and grill some steaks while the tivo is paused and then start the golf orgy just as the leaders tee off for the last round. Waaaaay more fun than the super bowl. I have no idea what will happen, I just hope there's some interesting names up there. the masters rarely disappoints. No one's leaderboard has as much movement on the sunday back nine. I'm just gidddy even thinking about it.

I have to agree with this. Fields are much deeper these days and it seems like everyone hits it 300+ from the tee. Not the case is Jack's heyday. Still love Jack, Arnie, and Gary though.

I've been way too excited about this year's Masters, for whatever reason I feel like we're due for an absolute classic.

And fark Martin Laird, 2nd year in a row he's been part of my lineup for the Masters, and watching him hit the same tree twice just now on 15 was a real kick in the knickers.

Same here. Fact is when you throw in Tiger's obscene 17 WGC championships that Jack didn't have the opportunity to play and frankly it's not even close. Jack was absolutely amazing and he played who he could and kicked their asses. But those WGC events tiger won include all the tours and often have fields as strong or stronger than the majors. That said, I love the old dudes too. Gary player is a mensch. I love the story of his first British Open.

It's difficult enough to win one tournament on the PGA tour. To win with the regularity that he has is mind boggling. I could care less about his personal failings. Fact is, the sport is much more fun to watch when he's in contention.

My Sunday menu includes steak, shrimp, and plenty of ice cold beer. Then I'll fire up the Xbox after the tourney and play a drunken round at Augusta. ;-)

Their almost zero commercials beats the hell out of funny SB commercials for tv sports. I even watch the whole Butler cabin thing. It used to crack me up listening to Hootie say, "Oh look, heah they ah now", as if the golfers just walked up to the door. Always love the low amateur's deer in the headlights, sunburn, hat-head look.

27.4%. That's just hardly believable against the fields he played. More than one out of four. Old Sam Snead's was 10%. jack's was 16% (I'd love to look that up and see what it was say at the time he won his last tourney to see if it creeps up some). That easily settles greatest golfer of all time for me. he played against the toughest fields and won a higher percentage than anyone in history. If we want to say Jack was the greatest majors player of all time - fine. I think Tiger would agree. But there are more than four tournaments every year. All that said I think Woods most unbreakable record is the cut streak.

That's funny. You're the king of vegas. Vegas has Tiger at 4/5 this week. Frankly I think golf odds to win a given tournament is farking crazy. Anyway... I think I'll just go ahead and disclose that I will not really cut off my left nut. Intentionally. For any reason. It's a figure of speech.

I root for most people that are really, really good and spend nearly two decades hearing about how they aren't that good because they don't win "when it counts."

If I hadn't heard a couple decades of how Tiger's not only a great golfer, but a great human being and how he walks on water and is so charming and interesting even when he clearly wasn't, I'd probably be rooting for him now. But IMO he's had quite enough success.

But you concede Jack's foils at the top were great, right? That's what it sounds like. Which makes Jack's 19 second-place finishes in Majors pretty amazing as well. Versus Tiger with 6 second-place finishes.

Jack during the 1970's was crazy dominant. In addition to 8 majors that decade, he finished in the top 10 in 35 of the 40 majors. Which is obscene if you think about it. Tiger during the 2000's won more majors, but did not have near the same consistency threatening basically every single tournament.

At some point it just turns into sports math for me. It's all about the plays and shots and sporting achievements. I'm old and I learned long ago that all your heroes will disappoint you if you look close enough. So I don't really have any. I've really reached the point where I honestly don't care what they do in their private lives. If they are still at the point where the police won't arrest them as they walk by then the rest of that shiat is none of my business. It's nice when they aren't jerks in real life. But if they are I don't let it interrupt my enjoyment of the athletic accomplishments. I'm not having them over for dinner. I eat dinner with real morally bankrupt people who routinely disappoint the hell out of me and suck at sports.

Fair enough; I also dislike Woods because he got all the limelight.

/pops went to ASU, so that's basically the reason I liked Mickelson
//if I were to choose players now, I probably wouldn't care about either of 'em
