Well yeah, if you're talking about a completely different situation. The issue there was illegal surveilance and child pornography.

On the other hand, this is the same situation as if you had a laptop that belonged to your corporation, or if you were on a work PC. Your files and usage are subject to the terms of your employer's IT policy. And if that policy says your work and web usage can be audited, then so be it.

I loved this related story on the sidebar:

Should backyard slaughtering be allowed in Burlington?
Updated: Backyard slaughter may be coming to the Queen City. The board of health is drafting an ordinance that would let you kill what you keep.

Back in the dey I made a MUD of my school and city and filled it with all sorts of real people and places.  Of course I had lots of notes I made during school while I was building it. I'm pretty sure I'd be put in jail if I had done that today.

Most people are not calling for the Second Amendment to be "killed."  They want certain restrictions placed on it.  There are already restrictions: in some states it is illegal to own a butterfly knife.  Knives are "arms."  You also can't just go out and buy a shoulder-mounted rocket launcher, at least not legally.

There are also restrictions on the First Amendment.  Slander and libel are illegal.  So is inciting violence.  So is threatening to kill someone.

All freedoms in America are restricted to one degree or another.

Skipping over the fact that every other Amendment in the Bill of Rights is an individual right, the Supreme Court disagrees with you, not to mention all of the supporting documentation from the original authors that say that the Second is an individual right to own firearms.

And as far as your 'well-regulated militia', at the time the Second was written, 'well-regulated' meant 'properly equipped and functioning' and 'militia' was basically everyone (that had rights to vote and own land and such).

Also, before you go off on a tangent about 'why can't I own nuclear weapons', that's a whole different class of weaponry, destructive devices have always been strictly controlled.

A "well-regulated militia" is the only justification for the right to bear arms cited in the 2nd.  But that does not mean it's the only one or even the fundamental one.

What is the purpose of a militia?  "The security of a free state," according to the 2nd.

What is the purpose  of securing a free state?   The welfare of its people.

What else secures the welfare of the people?  Self-defense (including defense from a tyrannical government), hunting for food; these are also justifications for the right to bear arms.  Target practice is necessary to be good at self-defense, hunting, or defending the security of the free state.

"Just messin' around" isn't a justification for the right to bear arms.

Try again illiterate hippy.

http://www.virginiainstitute.org/publications/primer_on_const.php#c4

absolute: "A well regulated Militia "
absolute: "being necessary to the security of a free State "
absolute: "the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. "

Obviously those rednecks have a better grasp of grammar than you do.
The right to keep and bear arms is applied to the people, not the militia.
Second 'a well regulated Militia' is something that we no longer have,
if the government becomes any more tyrannical than it already is we have
very few 'well regulated militias" that aren't already under federal investigation.
This leaves the protection of the state up to the people in lieu of a well regulated
militia provided by their state.

I will never understand how people are willing to give up rights out of fear.
OMG terrorists!! We have to restrict speech and privacy.
OMG unstable teenagers! We have to get rid of self protection!!

How about some farking education and personal responsibility?

In what i think was grade 10, me and a friend were bored in class and made a plan for how we'd take over the school. Using crossbows to eliminate the staff silently, starting in the main office. And ending with using the welding equipment in the shop to weld all the doors shut before police arrived. Had diagrams and everything drawn up, and all the different times to do different things. We were not remotely serious, of course. And it was a couple years before columbine happened, so we weren't even worried about doing it. I imagine these kids were doing the same thing, only were stupider for doing it after all the school shootings, and extremely stupid for doing it on Facebook.

And, boy do the cops and other nosy officials just love these cases where they get to snoop around in computers - make them feel all technologically relevant.

My kids school had a case about 15 years supposedly about "cyber-bullying", and the cops in their gung-ho investigation decided to go to all the student's houses, without a warrant, and snoop on every computer.

My clueless wife let the bastards in, not understanding that without a warrant they have no right to intrude on one's privacy like this (I blame her parents for this.) They took away away a floppy disk with something they found on it. Fortunately, nothing came of it.

Pretty sure y'all just got trolled hard...

Two things bother me about this article:

1: why the fark did the parents consent to searches? You never do that.

2: prosecution will likely have a hard time justifying the jail time for this. Making threats is enough for restrictions to be placed, etc, but I don't think it will be enough to result in jail time. If the kids have a history of making threats and then making good on them (article mentions assault charges), then they might win that argument. There's also the fact that the "access to firearms" was completely legal as long as all of the parent's firearms were legally obtained. I'm glad the prosecution is bringing such tough charges, it will send a message, I just think it's going to be hard to justify them in the end.

This isn't a case of 'boys being boys'.  These two farkwads are already involved in the legal system for other crimes against human beings (assault and robbery).  Exactly what in this story makes you think this is just a couple of kids blowing off steam?

Fine but why do we have to preface gun conversations with "no one's saying we should ban all guns."  That statement just isn't true.  I think we should and I've met other people that agree with me so I know it's not "no one" saying it.  It's just some phrase used that waters down your own argument to make it more appealing to the masses.

Well there's people out there that think all kinds of things, but I think repealing the 2nd Amendment is a pretty fringe view in this country. You never know though, you guys can end up being the prohibitionists of our time. I'll be fighting you every step of the way if you actually want to ban guns (as opposed to reasonable gun control and restrictions, ie treating Americans like adults).
