My wife and I have traveled to many places in all our years together, both posh and... not so posh. Flying certainly sucks the big one but it's a temporary thing. We just have NEVER been able to understand why folks would embark on a cruise.

I see the words "sneeze guard" and I'm OUT.

I would have to throw away a bunch of stuff that I have cooked INSIDE my house. Hell, you get flies inside from time to time and they're going to land on your food.

I wonder if these inspectors have ever been camping? They would probably get an ulcer from all the dirty things touching their food.

I think you are missing the point of cruising.  You can do things you can't do on a land locked vacation like shopping in stores, going to a casino, seeing a show, choosing from several different mediocre restaurants, or going swimming, but get this....wait for it....you're on a boat!!!   And when you go back to your room...the towel....the towel on your bed....might be shaped like a monkey or an elephant!!!

Oh and all the norovirus you wish to inhale, it's free.

Why isn't there a course that these MBA weasels take that says skimping on health and safety is a bad idea?  That superfluous cutting costs is good, but basic sanitation isn't one of those.  I mean, it seems like basic common sense, yet we see disaster after disaster where a corporation failed to maintain basic health, safety and maintenance and then had it blow up in their face.

i'm not what you would call a "learned man" by any stretch. but I know this, if there is one cockroach nymph, it's mom and 1000's of it's relatives are also booked for the cruise.

When you're some guy with his boss breathing down his neck and you have the work of two or three people to do, guess what? shiat gets half-assed, because even the idea of having the time to get all of that work done is completely laughable. Thus food related surfaces and equipment don't get cleaned correctly, machines don't get proper maintenance, etc. The result of bean counters who've never done a days work on the ground floor of whatever business they're involved in.

I really don't think consumers care about the health safety as long as nobody is dying and the cost of the cruise is cheao.

In NYC nobody stops eating at restaurants that have the big B an C health inspection letter grade on their front door, and I know for a fact that some restaurants don't even bother cleaning up their act and getting regraded because they've concluded they're not losing any business with the B or C.

Right. It's rare that anyone ever goes to jail, let alone loses their own money.

Pretty much all that happens is that the company pays a fine to the company and loses some money in a civil suit -- and the losses pail in comparison to all the money that was saved through cutting corners. And the person who made the decision to cut corners, resulting in the death? They're never punished. So there's little disincentive not to endanger people's lives to maximize profits.

Sounds like those neckties back at Carnival HQ need to have their contracts ripped up, and thrown in a high voltage incinerator.  It's unimaginable how they can get away with these dirty deeds.

I haven't seen a cockroach in my condo in years, but I get the occasional mosquito, and yes, that red dot on the floor is dried food waste from last night's pizza.  I guess I'd fail this test too.

I know, I'm not serving people food for money, but I seriously doubt the deficiencies in this report are what's causing all these accidents, engine breakdowns, toilet breakdowns, viral attacks, etc.

Anyone who's ever been at a barbecue has seen flies near the raw beef.  Not a cluster of flies crawling over it in throngs, I hope, but a fly or two is surely a routine guest at an outdoor grilling event.

OK I'll add that to my list of why I never want to go on a large cruise ship.

In no particular order:

1) Rapey/thievey crewmembers who never get investigated because international waters
2) Mysteriously disappearing passengers (see #1)
3) Norovirus
4) Engine failure
5) Poseidon Adventure
6) Overly macho captains who slam the boat into undersea obstacles in a misguided attempt to impress somebody
7) Trapped on the same ship with a bunch of other idiots for days on end
8) Buffet food
9) Pirates, none of whom are Johnny Depp

10) Roaches - I lived in the big city, I've been there, done that, don't want to go back.

Blech, I'm over cruises.  We did two because they were super cheap in FL.

First one was ok, second one was horrible. Our room filled up with cigarette smoke overnight (was literally fuzzy and could barely see).  The staff acted like I was being a huge pain and that I was making this up.  Finally wound up with a crappier room and only got a refund for the difference in price. Just horrible.  Nothing like changing rooms at 2AM and having your clothes reek like smoke.

One was carnival one was royal caribbean.  I think carnival was the smoking one, not 100% sure though.

We took a cruise to Mexico two years ago and it was pretty fun. But it's a been there, done that kind of thing. I can't come up with a good reason to go again.
