-Video recording in public is a perfectly legal, period. Recording cops performing their duties is almost a public responsibility nowadays; remind them constantly that they're being watched, just like everyone else with all the surveillance cameras around...

NutWrench: H31N0US: The cop was within his rights to ask not to be filmed

No he wasn't. He was in a public place and had no expectation of privacy.
Just like the rest of us.

It depends what state you are in. Some states require consent of all parties before you can film them. If this was in CA - as it seems to be - cop may had the right to refuse to be filmed.

It's irrelevant though. Cop is an idiot for claiming a cellphone can be weapon and escalating the situation and the guy is a douche for filming the cops during a citation.

Every patriot has a duty to squeal. Bad cops undermine the vital role of law enforcement. There are two kinds of bad cops- those who deny the civil liberties of US residents, and those who keep quiet when they encounter type number 1.

The only good cop is a cop who enforces the law regardless of who's breaking it- the guy who steals a Snickers does FAR less damage to the USA and civil society than the cop who illegally subverts the civil liberties of US residents.

Without those who videotape these lawbreakers, we will proceed into this corruption until it is not tolerable, at which point the angriest among us will burn everything down and start over. This process is expensive and bloody. The alternative is to reform over time by exposing malfeasance so that it can be dealt with and the structures of government can undergo continuous improvement. Ironically, it is the reformers the government cracks down on now, even though the alternative is expensive, bloody, disastrous revolt.

Government is made by fools and short sighted beaurocrats, and this is why we can't have nice things.

Perhaps if cops weren't attacking citizens for no reason, they would be less hated.  Something about "serve and protect" comes to mind.

I'm sure you are a member of some group - race, religion, profession? - that also does bad things.
Should I paint all members of your group with the same brush?

jaybeezey: I'm usually a pro-lawandorder kind of guy, but cops have been doing some real dicey shiat when to comes to being video recorded.

Yup.

And you know who REALLY hates douchey cops? Non douchey cops. You know who REALLY hates authority-abusing cops? Non-authority-abusing cops. A single incident like this makes it that much harder for real cops, good cops to do their jobs.

You know why "Stop snitchin'" is so effective? Because if you live in "that (kind of) neighborhood" and you call the cops, they may shoot you as they walk up because you have a WEAPON! phone in your hand (with the 911 dispatch on the other end). This scenario almost happened to me - in broad daylight - in PG County (thankfully, she holstered her weapon). The cynic in me wonders, if I was a few shades darker, would the cop have aerated me just to be sure?

Law enforcement should start policing themselves. Qui custodat ipsos custodies? Nofarkingone, unless you do.

Suckmaster Burstingfoam: The real reason that cops hate cameras is that all cops lie all the time and have done so forever.

Now that everyone has a video camera on their smartphone, the police have to constantly smash them to ensure that evidence of their constant lying never gets out.

The courts will support the police who do this, because if it gets out that all cops are liars, they'll never be able to convict anyone of a crime based on police testimony again.

You sound like an insane person.
But typical of Fark.

San Diego cops are geniuses. Some years ago a local TV news cameraman spotted a couple of them ragging on a well-known football player and started taping it from a reasonable distance. One of the cops charged up to him, grabbed the camera, shoved the videographer over a low railing and down a hillside, then put the camera, still running, in the back of his patrol car. I never heard what happened to the cop, but he should have been fired and charged with assault under color of authority. I hope the city had to pay out a ton of money to the video guy. Looks like no lesson was learned, however.

The supreme court disagrees.

Shocking this happened in a liberal state. This would never happen in mew york, chicago, philly, baltimore, oakland...

Except that the courts have rules that the cop WAS NOT WITHIN HIS rights. If he is in public with no expectation of privacy you can film him.

This cop is just a douchebag with an attitude and a badge. Apparently a common combination.

Cops treat people the same way. You have one black guy steal a slice of pizza, they treat every black person as dangerous thieving criminals.

You have one Hispanic man caught with a joint, they treat all Hispanics as dangerous drug users and possible cartel kingpins.

They profile. Why can't we?

If it's wrong when they do it, how is it any righter when you do? In both cases they say it's "because safety". Now the real question is, if your house is broken into or a family member is assaulted, who ya gonna call?

Fight fire, with fire. Cops are people first.

They change who they are when they put on that uniform. Most of the time, the change isn't very good.

the phone could be "converted into a weapon"

According to Snopes, this is actually true. But even so, in the other link from TFA, in the follow-up video, the cop says that all he needed to do was take a look at the phone. If that was the case, he did a pretty farking shiatty job of explaining that to the guy during the first video.

moved into my new (to me) house in the burbs & on the very first night the cops block off the neighborhood in response to a drunk guy.
granted, i don't know what dude did or said, but the response of no less than 15 cops with those long rifles with the scary black bits seemed a bit much.

you could almost taste the disappointment in their faces as they packed up all their artillery without a shot fired 10 minutes later  & a drunk and loud man stood cuffed in the front lawn.  he didn't have a shirt on.

/did not feel safer

Neither my "race, religion or profession" is supposed to be there for the service of my fellow citizens.  You seem to think that posting an article about cops being assholes and violating someone rights is a "daily cop hate thread"... and my comment is that there would be fewer of these threads if these incidents weren't so common.  If there were daily examples of white people attacking black people, as there were in the south in the 50's and 60's, then I'd expect daily articles about that.  And I would also expect that people would say, "Damn, those white folks in the south are a bunch of assholes," which is not only what happened then, but the "same brush" they're painted with even to today.
