Yeah, and she got biatch-slapped in court on day two of the trial when they asked her if she understood that fancy part in the "terms of service" that she agreed to where it stated that all information she submit be accurate.

Revealing her age damaged her chances of movie stardom? Well too damn bad, my tiny penis ruined my chances of becoming a porn star, you don't see me suing my Dad and Grandfathers for passing on shrimp-dicked genes to me.

The Houston native hoped to take advantage of the site by logging on under a friend's account and putting up a bogus birth date that was seven years younger than her true birth date of July 16, 1971.
But when Hoang later signed up for the paid service of IMDb Pro, the Web site used her credit-card information to track down her real age and post it to her profile in 2011, she claims.

Whether or not they ought to post her age in place of a blank field, I think IMDB is right to correct a lie.

Honey, there are tons of older actors and actresses currently in Hollywood. The difference is they have actual talent, which is what most studios are looking for.

Age is nothing but a number

Who?

Looks her up on IMDB...

Who?

Hoang has the backing of her actors union, which has long criticized IMDb for posting accurate ages.

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go clean up.

Hot and stupid.  What's not to like?

2013-04-11 02:03:01 PM
No matter how hot and young you are- or are pretending to be- its a 1 in 100,000 chance of "making it big" in Hollywood.

That being said, how is age really a big deal?  Most movies have parts for 40-50 year olds.  Maybe not staring roles, but certainly bigger roles than "Woman in diner #3".

From another article with a little more detail on the union statements.

Two heavyweight unions, the 200,000-member Screen Actors Guild (SAG) and the 80,000-member American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) came to the then-unnamed actress's defence in October, denouncing IMDb's policy: "An actor's actual age is irrelevant to casting. What matters is the age range that an actor can portray. For the entire history of professional acting, this has been true, but that reality has been upended by the development of IMDb as an industry standard used in casting offices across America."

Last Friday, SAG issued another statement praising Hoang for her courage in "standing up to fight the unfair and abusive practice of publishing actors' private information online without their consent." The organization says thousands of actors have been hurt by IMDb's unauthorized publication of their ages, particularly women. According to the union, women over 40 make up 24.3 per cent of the U.S. population, but actresses over 40 get just 12.5 per cent of movie and television roles, while men are proportionally represented.

Interesting.  But I still fail to see why that's IMDB's problem.  The "problem" is with the studios and casting agents.

I read her quote about being "Up and coming" as she approached 40, and was taking a sip.

It's a double reverse Streisand effect?

She's going nowhere, and now has a pretty cute pic and her name in the New York Post.  All she had to give up was a DOB that everyone knew already anyway.

You couldn't buy that publicity for the amount it would cost to file claim papers, then immediately drop the suit after a few days of milking the publicity.

It sounds crazy, so we shouldn't rule it out.

In her defense, anyone who starred in Gingerdead Man 3: Saturday Night Cleaver and Hoodrats 2: Hoodrat Warriors could very well be on the cusp of a creative collaboration with the likes of Scorsese, Spielberg and David Lean.

So, in her mind, having been in b-movies for TWO DECADES makes her an "up and coming actress"?

Yeah...no...just no...

Not to mention she admitted to trying to circumvent the TOS of the site in the first place.

Is the truth a positive defense here?

Couldn't IMDB just say "As part of a standard profile, we require fields X, Y and Z - we can and will gladly remove Ms Butthurt's profile, for a partial refund of her registration fee"?

Also, if a studio signs you up for a job, won't your real DOB need to be on that paperwork anyway, giving Hollywood more than enough time to "move in a different direction"?

Furthermore, don't people rely on IMDB for factual information - IMDB could be said to be "protecting their product" in this case?

Think of the cases where an actress was hired despite being underage, though. Two I can think of off the top of my head are Mila Kunis(Jackie on That 70's Show) and, most damning, Traci Lords...

People don't check ages as closely as they should sometimes.

Just start doing MILF porn already.  There's a big market for that these days, and you're in the right demographic for it.

Is it bad that I knew who the headline was referring to as soon as I saw the Followup tag?

I don't think this woman's difficulties with finding work have anything to do with age.

/Exhibit A: every high-school sitcom ever

2013-04-11 04:20:14 PM
I'm always checking IMDB to see who people are and (apparently) correct ages are extremely common, even on up-and-coming actresses.  So, yes, I know that Hollywood has an ageist element, but I call bullshiat on this case and its $1m damage claim.

Nezu Chiza: Two I can think of off the top of my head are Mila Kunis(Jackie on That 70's Show) and, most damning, Traci Lords...

They changed the law to prevent future Traci Lordseses (including strengthening penalties for people who - knowingly or not - put underage models in porn), and Mila Kunis was 15 at that audition; old enough to legally kiss Ashton Kutcher (IIRC, she's said that was her first kiss).

Besides which, Mila lied about her age (or her mom did) to get the audition. Once she got the part, I'm guessing they suddenly took a stronger interest in her papers. For porn, you now have to file legal paperwork showing that everyone involved is legal (those 18-USC-whatever notices all over your favorite porn site).

// actually, I seem to recall that part of the Traci Lords brouhaha was over her foreign paperwork (which was itself likely either forged/altered or unavailable during the Soviet early-80s)

Yeah 20 years your not up and coming anymore. Seems she is just cast in the background a lot.

Okay, she's referred to as a Houston native... But where does she live? Nobody shoots in Houston, nobody casts in Houston. She'd have a better career in Dallas due to the film companies in Las Colinas. Heck, if I went into it I could have a halfway decent film career in Las Colinas.
