Not a bad investment, actually.  Considering that (if you actual RTFA) it sounds like it's more of a publicity piece than an actual police car.
1. Make a show of law and order, coolness, and extravagance for the tourists and international meda
2. Attract more tourists and trade by helping enhance the country's image to Westerners.
3 Profit.

I saw an Aventador crashing over uneven pavement in a lane barely wide enough to accommodate it on Ponce in Atlanta a few weeks ago  I suppose when you've got enough money for an Aventador you don't care if you jam a $10,000 wheel into a rough granite curb, but it seemed like kind of a lousy way to get around town.  That and it's the first car to attract panhandlers at the light in front of the Murder Kroger.

This is what the curbs look like in most of Atlanta.  Even my neighborhood that was built in the 60s has them.  They're hell on low-profile rims.

Sports cars aren't "supposed to get bad gas mileage". A good sports car will get good gas mileage, because gas is weight, and time spent refueling is time spent not racing. The two things aren't mutually exclusive: an Ariel Atom sips its way around a track at more like 33mpg, and it's a *proper* sports car, not a road car that happens to look a bit sporty.

Yes, that 5mpg is a crucial bit of evidence, from which the opposing viewpoint will never recover.  After all, that bit of engineering gives the 10 gallon tank of your comparison car a whopping 330 range, while the terrible mileage and engineering of a Corvette makes it suffer with a scant 490 range, due to all that extra fuel they are forced to carry to compensate for their marginal reduction in fuel efficiency.

Typed a reply and somehow it vanished instead of posting. Ah well.

I'll race you for any number of laps you care to choose, around any proper track of your choosing (ie. not a Nascar oval, and not a drag strip -- something with turns in both directions, closed loop or rally-style point-to-point), any surface, any climatic conditions (with appropriate tyres for both cars), and you can drive any Corvette model you like (stock, against a stock Ariel Atom 500 V8).

No matter what you choose, I will take your ass and hand it to you on a platter.

In real racing, small, light, and nimble is far more important than the typical American formula of "jam a huge, heavy, inefficient engine in there and live with the shiat handling". There's a reason that the Atom beats the Corvette hands-down in every single on-track comparison I've ever seen, despite having barely half the horsepower. It has superb handling and it weighs 1/3 as much.

2013-04-11 05:39:55 PM
Oh, and here's a citation:

http://fastestlaps.com/tracks/top_gear_track.html

Note the Atom 500 V8 (481 horsepower) beats the fastest Corvette they've tested, the ZR1 (647 horsepower) by 5.3 seconds on a 75.1 second lap. That's 7% faster on a quarter less horsepower, and even the original Atom (303 horsepower) beats the Corvette with 53% less power.

Now, I'll grant you that's on a damp track, however the Stig reckons that's worth two seconds at best, so the Atom 500 V8 still wins by over three seconds with a quarter less power, and the original Atom loses by at most one second on less than half the power.

So, how many of the police there know how to drive at over 150mph?  Are the highways there that clear of other cars that they can open it up anyway? There is no way in hell that they would pursue another exotic at the top speeds.  Helicopters are more effective at following triple digit numb sculls before they crash.
