"Relevant to said mission is the following query I now put forth to you. Said query concerning matters strictly spatial in nature... Wherein this most streamlined and backseat-less of transports, boner-inspiring though it may be, wherein are we to reposit our recently busted cargo?"

Yeah, I was going to point out that if you wanted to get away from the cops driving that car, just speed off and let them wreck themselves when they punch the accelerator.

Fissile: Gulf Arabs are morons. They squander their money on childish BS like this. When the oil wells dry up, they'll go right back to being what they always were, flee-bitten goat farkers

I think you're confusing them with the Saudis.  The Emirates can see that they don't have oil like the Saudis, the Iranians, or even the Venezuelans.  They've been working pretty hard at becoming the center of finance in the area, and the spot where people can conduct business like civilized people.  And it works.  I'll meet our Afghani guys in Dubai every time rather than schlep to Kabul.

I thought the same, and looked it up. The Lenco BEAR and BearCat are not as expensive. $180,000 - $300,000. The Aventador is closer to $500,000.

Ugly car. Looks like a wireless mouse.

There's 3 guys in the UK who disagree with you:

That's the thing about looks. They're high subjective.

The car is an engineering marvel. I just find it looks like ass.

/don't like the R8's looks either, which are somewhat similar

The MRAP is $600,000.  I found the Aventador around $375,000.

gweilo8888: Mr Guy: What's sad is they are doing it for literally no reason.  I've heard of cops having luxury sports cars like corvettes in the US, but it's to try and catch unloaded logging trucks in the Pacific NW flying through the mountains at ludicrous speed.

You've misspelled "sporty-looking, rolling piece of shiat that drinks gas like it's going out of fashion, and doesn't handle or steer worth a damn."

/never let an American build a sports car

I'd agree that it isn't a luxury car, but it discredits your post when you call it out on a gas mileage.  One - it's a sports car, it's supposed to get bad gas mileage.  Two - it's a sports car that gets 26 mpg (2014 model).  That compares to 13-15 for Ferrari models, 16-18 for Porsche, etc...

You are right there.  Not that it matters that much to me, since the chances of me having an extra $1M to buy a Veyron are about 175,000,000 to 1.

Deputy police director Gen Khamis Matter al-Muzaina boasted the Italian-built Lamborghini would illustrate 'how classy Dubai is'

If you're buying things specifically to show "how classy" you are, you are not classy. You are trashy but rich.

Dubai is still a thing? Thought it basically became a very expensive ghost town after the recession hit.

Dubai always reminded me of a likely setting for a Bioshock game, this time in a desert.

Yeah, a friend of my uncles was a statie in Montana before they had speed limits, he drove a porche.

But in this case...

"But they are unlikely to risk using it in car chases, instead using it mainly for show in popular tourist areas. "

Pointless.

If you're going to insult a country, you might want to make sure it's actually a country before you call it one.

Or else you might look foolish.

Sports cars aren't "supposed to get bad gas mileage". A good sports car will get good gas mileage, because gas is weight, and time spent refueling is time spent not racing. The two things aren't mutually exclusive: an Ariel Atom sips its way around a track at more like 33mpg, and it's a *proper* sports car, not a road car that happens to look a bit sporty.

Yes, that 5mpg is a crucial bit of evidence, from which the opposing viewpoint will never recover.  After all, that bit of engineering gives the 10 gallon tank of your comparison car a whopping 330 range, while the terrible mileage and engineering of a Corvette makes it suffer with a scant 490 range, due to all that extra fuel they are forced to carry to compensate for their marginal reduction in fuel efficiency.

Typed a reply and somehow it vanished instead of posting. Ah well.

I'll race you for any number of laps you care to choose, around any proper track of your choosing (ie. not a Nascar oval, and not a drag strip -- something with turns in both directions, closed loop or rally-style point-to-point), any surface, any climatic conditions (with appropriate tyres for both cars), and you can drive any Corvette model you like (stock, against a stock Ariel Atom 500 V8).

No matter what you choose, I will take your ass and hand it to you on a platter.

In real racing, small, light, and nimble is far more important than the typical American formula of "jam a huge, heavy, inefficient engine in there and live with the shiat handling". There's a reason that the Atom beats the Corvette hands-down in every single on-track comparison I've ever seen, despite having barely half the horsepower. It has superb handling and it weighs 1/3 as much.

2013-04-11 05:39:55 PM
Oh, and here's a citation:

http://fastestlaps.com/tracks/top_gear_track.html

Note the Atom 500 V8 (481 horsepower) beats the fastest Corvette they've tested, the ZR1 (647 horsepower) by 5.3 seconds on a 75.1 second lap. That's 7% faster on a quarter less horsepower, and even the original Atom (303 horsepower) beats the Corvette with 53% less power.

Now, I'll grant you that's on a damp track, however the Stig reckons that's worth two seconds at best, so the Atom 500 V8 still wins by over three seconds with a quarter less power, and the original Atom loses by at most one second on less than half the power.

So, how many of the police there know how to drive at over 150mph?  Are the highways there that clear of other cars that they can open it up anyway? There is no way in hell that they would pursue another exotic at the top speeds.  Helicopters are more effective at following triple digit numb sculls before they crash.
