By far the most logical explanation is that one of the meeting attendees recorded the meeting.  Therefore, I can only assume that the turtle is using the FBI as a free means of figuring out which one of his staffers is disloyal.

The kind of planning and execution it would take for a Dem operative to secretly record an election strategy meeting just doesn't match up to the value of the soundbite that was generated.

Basically the turtle is either woefully stupid if he thinks the "left" did it or wasting taxpayer dollars if he believes that one of his staffers did it.

FBI: Do you guys really think Ashley Judd was a threat?

Staffers: Yes we did.

FBI: I see... *Scribbles on notepad* 'McConnell staffers very stupid. Must refrain from laughing.'

That's not true. McConnell will raise thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, from the deRp who will actually fall for this ruse.

Write all the dramedy you want, but Judd was polling pretty close to McConnell and that was without even campaigning a single day or officially entering the race.  One of the reasons the GOP finds it so hard to get an outright majority in the Senate these days is that you can't gerrymander a state-wide election.

I want to know this staffer. I want them to come out, publicly, and tell us why they recorded their boss and his staff being such pricks, risking their job and reputation in the process.

I want him not to come to the Blue side, but to say all this to the Reds - "If we need to use dirty tricks to beat the libs, we've already lost. We need to win on ideas, not on innuendo."

Undoubtedly.  If the "left" had the kind of access where they could record any turtle-approved meeting why would they blow their cover by releasing this recording?  Use that access to monitor his strategy during the ACTUAL election or see if you can uncover some legitimate criminal activity.  It makes no sense for it to be an outside job.

Wasn't this the entire basis for Ms. Judd's run? No chance of winning, but keep those tapes* running with exactly what Republicans think a woman's place is.

It wasn't possible for her to leave early enough for this strategy to fail.

Which one? The independent one that showed Judd trailing by 9 points, or the internal McConnell polled that showed Judd trailing by 4 points so the democrats would be more apt to pick her. How about this one that shows Grimes, the best democratic candidate in the race, is within the margin of error. It also shows that 24% of democrats show support for McConnell showing that the person that will beat McConnell needs to win over Republicans, not democrats. Something Judd can't do and Grimes has already done at a statewide level.

First of all, polling 9 pts behind against an incumbent who also happens to be the leader of his party in the Senate is a pretty impressive starting point.  The question wasn't whether Grimes was a better candidate than Judd, it was "was Judd a threat?"  Clearly she was.

Secondly, Kentucky Dems likely have a fairly blueish canine cast to their Demminess.  24% Dem support for a GOP candidate in California would be troubling, 24% in the south seems not nearly as unthinkable.

McConnell is, by a wide margin, the most unpopular Senator up for reelection in 2014.  He's so unpopular that Ed Marksberry, a failed 2012 Congressional candidate who lost that bid 68% to 32% is only 11 points behind McConnell. Right now a slab of drift wood would be polling within 15 points of Mitch McConnell.

That's what I'm thinking.  Either the FBI rats out his disloyal, but non-law breaking staffer, or they find out it really was a crime and his office was bugged (much less likely).  I can see why he wanted to get them involved.  Unless, of course, they uncover other crimes of his while investigating..

I suspect that since Mitch is well aware that his political opponents on both sides smell blood in the water, he will be ginning up stories of his abuse by "The Left" fairly regularly.

I hope when the FBI finds that it was one of his employees that recorded the audio that Reid demands an apology from McConell on the Senate floor.

Don't digital audio recordings have embedded device identification: LG phone model X, serial number Y, etc? From there it should be trivial to finger the culprit.

Or am I talking out my ass?

I'm not sure if the device type is recorded, but they might be able to analyze it by the codec used. Of course, any audio or video file can be redone in a different codec with editing software, so the forensics on that might be pretty murky.

Don't you need evidence of a crime before you can investigate something?  At minimum a statement from all the parties present that they did not record the meeting.

Which would be interesting because recording the meeting if you were invited to be there wouldn't be illegal, but lying to the FBI would be.

Codec chips are mass produced and put into all the different brands.  The audio signature of the microphone would be more useful (narrow the brand better) but better yet would be easier to determine where the person was sitting in relation to the other speakers assuming they had the recording device on their person.

Maybe, but in this case the FBI have been formally requested to look into it. And since the recording is out in the open now, they could simply run it through their forensic programs, CSI style, and finger the recorder. Or not, if it's not that simple. Heck, the FBI might have explained this already to McConnell's staff, and is letting them stew over the implications before making any public statements.
