Simcity had one of the worst Beta testing sessions I've ever seen.  People only got to Beta test it for an hour at a time, so their city never really got to a large enough size where all the big problems started to pop up.

As of now, once your city matures, traffic problems are so widescale, most people just abandon the city and start a new one.  Also, having non-renewable resources is one of the stupidest ideas I've seen.  Once your city runs out of water, it's borked.  and regional trading is screwed up as well.

/Maybe EA will buy out Activision/Blizzard so we only have one huge corporation of suckatude

Well, the 4 or 5 gamers on Macs probably won't overload the servers, anyway.

FTFA: They're bringing back cheetah speed after disabling it because of the strain (perceived or actual) put on the servers.

Hmm. What else could have alleviated that issue for a predominantly single-player sandbox game?

Bueller?

Bueller?

Oh, yeah. Having a true single-player mode that runs and saves client side rather than server side. Frakin' idiots.

aevorea: What else could have alleviated that issue for a predominantly single-player sandbox game?

Ah, well, there's your confusion. This isn't a predominantly single-player game, according to EA, hence no reason to include a single-player mode.

Mind you, it also means there's no reason to buy it, but hey, can't have everything.

It shouldn't be too surprising that much of Texas is based on non-renewable wells.

/couldn't happen to a better company
//hope gog.com is making bank for having the best SimCity available (should be better than a cracked/pirated current version).

Really?  Me neither.  Mainly because EA can EABOD and I didn't buy it.  Loyal SimCity player since the 90s too.  Shame.

Never had any server issues. Doubt I ever will.

Probably since I won't get any EA game that requires a connection to their servers. Mercenaries 2 on PS3 is unplayable ae long as you have an active internet connection. Game crash trying to connect to their servers that discontinued hosting. Even for single player games. The game crashes before the menu loads.

/Plus achievements tied to multiplayer are now impossible to get.

I'm not normally a completionist but man those bothered me in Burnout paradise city. I love that game so much I would marry it. I got everything in that game but do you think I could wrangle 7 friends to pay attention long enough to get the 8 play achievements?

Still an awesome game, in fact it made NFS most wanted enjoyable because any time I got frustrated I saw something clearly influenced by Burnout Paradise that I gave it another shot.

Or, after PC users have endured a four-month beta test and EA has fixed the servers and gotten the game nicely patched up, Mac users will have smooth sailing.

I'm pretty sure that was deliberate.  If they didn't know about traffic and pathing problems before the beta weekends, not even the developers were playing their own game.
The short play time was designed to hide how quickly the simulation breaks down.

Your optimism is misplaced with EA. They have a track record with this sort of thing, and they generally follow the rule of screwing over their loyal customers. Don't expect to enjoy SimCity (Online) more than a couple of years, because they WILL shut down the server, and in effect, the game, to force you to buy the next version.

It's never been about piracy, and the tacked-on multiplayer 'resource interaction' could easily be simulated for single players. It's about being able to pull the plug when the time is right for EA and making this version of SimCity go away forever when they release 'SimCity 2015'

Simple.  They sell you older hardware at above new hardware pricing.  You're not paying for a new, quality machine.  You're paying for a Mac.  The occasional free hardware replacement doesn't even make a dent in the markup.  Not to mention they save tons as a Chinese company, especially when their government sees no distinction between raising worker quality of life, or suicide nets.

Eh, let's face it.  Apple isn't a computer company.  It's a marketing company.  A damned effective one, at that.  They've built their own little cult that'll buy every new version of whatever, so long as it has the proper label.  Pavlov had nothing on Steve Jobs.

I had more respect for the company back in the old days, when they were decrying how meglomoniacal Microsoft had become.  Somewhere along the way, they forgot those roots, and became the company they originally abhored.  They even go so far as to tell their own customers what it is they want or need.  That's the genius of Apple, really.   Some companies spend lots of time and effort and treasure figuring out what their customers want.  Apple instead just dictates.  And it appears to be a very effective model.

Poe's Law applied to tech. The unfortunate fact is that there are far too many people out there who legitimately believe this.

And since the new SimCity is apparently written entirely in JavaScript and runs through a stripped-down web browser, there was never any technical reason for them not to release on both platforms simultaneously.

Heck, Notch even turned down Valve when they just wanted to put Minecraft on Steam.  Valve was classy, though, and gave him a one-of-a-kind TF2 hat as a "no hard feelings" jesture.

Fark em.

After a week and a half of SimCity not working, and after their own Global Community Leader said players could request refunds, I gave a call to EA to ask if there was a timetable for resolution. The response I got was "you people need to be more patient." At that point, I was pretty mad about the response, so I asked for a refund. The lady on the phone said "the statement was we'll give refunds AT OUR DISCRETION." She seemed pretty intransigent about issuing the refund, so I hung up.

I called my bank, asked for a chargeback. The woman on the phone asked why, I told her that I ordered a product from them, and it simply didn't work... I assured her that the problem was not simply my ability to use the game, but a problem on EA's end, and directed her to news stories about it. EA challenged the chargeback, and won. They pointed to their TOS for Origin including the no refund provision, and argued that there was "no reasonable expectation of functionality." So, once again, EA had my 80 bucks for the pre-order (game plus heroes and villains set).

I wrote to the BBB, who in turn wrote to EA. So far it has been 3 weeks, and EA representatives ("Solenn","Elaine", and "Catherine") have each simply copy pastad the TOS to me. To be clear, when I wrote to the BBB, I said I would either like a refund OR someone at the policy making level that made the no refund policy to write me and explain the rationale in applying the policy to customers who did not receive a functional game (I indicated I understand the necessity of a no refund policy to prevent people from effectively renting games for free). Nobody (so far) has even touched on the reasonability or rationale of this policy, and frankly, I can't even be sure that I'm dealing with different people, real people, or just a crappy knockoff of CleverBot.

Nice to see you're doing the usual dance in these threads fluffy.  I figure in firefly's position I'd be expending some time trying to get my money back too and I'd make it a goal to at minimum ensure I've made EA waste at least $80 worth of employee time dealing with my attempts.  I commend the perseverance, its one thing for those of us who knew it was going to flop to not buy in, its another to actively grind EA's bottom line into a negative state after mistakenly purchasing one of their products.

but again, thanks for your positive enthusiasm and communal respect fluffy, you are a gem among the rough here on Fark.

/yah yah, welcometofark.jpg to you too asshole :P

EA doesn't even need to respond to the BBB, and probably will just stop doing so.

The BBB has no legal authority. At all. You are a utter fool to think otherwise.

They are in the business of trying to mediate disputes.

EA has no interest in mediation, they have mandatory binding arbitration.

So EA gets your 80 bucks, the BBB can't help and he learns once again to stop pre ordering games.

But he's probably already got all the games for the year Pre-Ordered, and won't learn a thing from this.

/BBB being able to help you.
//Oh man that's still funny!
