I can't help but lose a little bit of respect for someone when I see them using an iPhone.

How odd... I can't help but feel sorry for the poor bastards with their Android devices and the even poorer bastards with their Lumia 920's going...but the camera!

What about the camera? I've got on on my desk right here...any photo taken without the flash and it's greener than a stoned leprechaun after a rollercoaster ride.

Wow you sound like an awesome person.

I honestly don't know why the continue the cat-and-mouse thing. It seems like the kind of people (end users) who want to jailbreak will do it anyway, regardless of whether or not you're making it harder for the devs doing the work. I don't expect that JB rates would suddenly increased if they stopped fighting it.

The typical geek who uses Apple products views Apple as a stuffy company which takes itself too seriously and is trying to take away all the geek fun in the process

(twitch)

I know This Is Fark but for our daily Apple headline this is the best that we can get?  Ugh.

Don't feed the trolls.

Also, i agree. I'm not sure what they are protecting. Some people like the hardware, but don't like the software. Some like both. You're still making a sale.

It just occurred to me that it COULD be justified, at least internally, by the fact that you can pirate apps if JB'd. Perhaps that's enough reason?

I've always seen Apple as super-conservative. With their attitude of 'Apple knows best, the users are idiots' ideaology, it's no wonder Apple is getting miffed. I've always found their software 'dumbed down' for the modern user and their super 'control freak' midset will eventually make Apple into Microsoft.

The only way it would result in "less money to apple" is: Ad Blockers, and Pirated Apps.

Which actually now that I say them both together seems to fully explain why they fight jailbreaking, those are two huge revenue streams they want to keep intact.

2013-04-11 09:29:47 AM
I like this spin people take to these things.  Yep, Apple's just out to stop the jailbreakers.
Jailbreaks work by exploiting security vulnerabilities.  If they go unpatched, hackers could use those same bugs to compromise your phone.  Then you'd all be complaining about how unsecure Apple is.

2013-04-11 09:29:55 AM
Apple hates ANYONE who attempts to use their products in a manner that they don't permit.

2013-04-11 09:30:04 AM
Why would someone who has tech knowledge jailbreak the phone of someone else who has no idea how a smart phone works. I call bs. Apple doesn't like jail broken phone because it cuts out revenue. Doesn't a jailbroken iPhone void the warranty, why would the genius bar even touch these phones.

2013-04-11 09:30:53 AM
I expect, deep down, that Apple appreciates the free security bug finding. Granted jailbreak exploits may or may not have been used in the wild to hack devices for nefarious purposes, but it's possible. This gives Apple a great help in finding and fixing these kind of bugs.

It's probably to Apple's benefit to continue their current strategy. If they added an official "Jailbreak Enable" option they'd lose that security screening. Meanwhile they likely don't lose a lot of sales (by percentage) to people who would buy an iPhone only if they jailbreak it.

Alot of apps only exist on jailbroken phones because they are a type that apple does not allow on the app store. I have an old iphone dedicated to emulators. I only jb'd the thing so i could get those on there. If apple allowed emulators, i would not have jailbroken it.

Apple doesn't like this because they make a product and are legally bound to support it for a year, even tho someone's jailbreaking it can be the problem. They sought to make it illegal so they wouldn't have to support user broken shiat.

Piracy mouse? Wut? Well, it doesn't scan. There's a surprising amount of piracy in the AppStore. I think the stats are heavily inflated, but many developers track activations of their applications, and they see many more activations than they have sales.

For Apple, these are the same things.

It is to keep folks locked into Apple's market and ecosystem.  This is the main reason that I never went to for any iDevices.  Sure Apple makes some nice hardware and software, but I don't like being locked into a specific vendor.  I have friends now that want to jump ship and move to Android or whatever, but they always reconsider as they don't want to lose their iTunes media they have purchased over the years.   The walled garden has worked well for Apple.

Ignorance of operating something doesn't make them an idiot.  That's like saying all people in end-user support live in their mom's basement.

If they allowed adblocking and tethering, I would have no reason to jailbreak. I paid a shiatload of money for my iPhone, and I don't appreciate being spammed with ads constantly. Every now and then, I want to tether my laptop to my cell phone so I can get internet access and do work when I'm in a location without wifi. It's my data plan, I should be able to use it as I see fit.

Piracy never enters the picture, for me at least.

I think both of those are due to pressure from the carriers, although interestingly contradictory pressure. The sales people hate adblocking, because they want you to run through your data plan faster downloading 5MB of animated ads for every page. The data people hate tethering because you can use more bandwidth.

Now I'm not sure I understand your larger point. Apple is bad for offering a Genius bar because it "treats customers like idiots," but users aren't idiots, they just... don't know how to use the OS? So they would need help?

Or is it just because of the word Genius? If that's the case, man, take a pill of chill. Reading wayyyy too much into that.

After using Android phones for the past few years, I recently switched to an iPhone 5.
I no longer felt like f*cking around with my phone. I just want a phone mostly to use as a phone, and have a few apps that I use from time to time. The iPhone fit the bill. No carrier bloatware, and updates come directly from Apple.

If I have some serious work to be done, it's not going to be happen on a cell phone.

iPhone does allow adblocking, and tethering. Some carriers don't, tho. I'm on ATT with a 3gs and I can do both.

s2s2s2: adblocking

You may be using a third-party ad-blocking browser, but there is no system-wide ad-blocking, and all third-party browsers use a more restricted JavaScript engine with significantly poorer performance.

Think about it from the side of an app developer too.  They start getting bad reviews and crash reports from end users and then spend hours or days trying to track down the "bug", only to find it's just happening on jailbroken phones that have some shiat-hacked app on them.

I look at them with envy because they've got one device which does things you'd normally need to haul around two or three devices for.

While you're all smug playing Angry Birds on your iPhone, they're reading on a comfortably-sized screen, creating digital art or taking notes in Calculus class, or doing one of a myriad of other things that your piece of crap iPhone can't.

Apple doesn't hate jailbreakers. They could be doing a lot more to crack down. They just don't do anything to support them. They have actually hired some jailbreakers. The problem comes from the fact that jailbreaking exploits security holes in order to work. Apple is obligated to plug those holes. They just don't do anything to try to preserve the jailbreaks.

Apple likely gets a good amount of R&D from jailbreakers. What better way to see what UI tweeks will work well?

You misunderstand, I don't have an Iphone. I have a Nexus 4 and am very happy with it despite it not being perfect. I just think phones with 6 inch screens are ridiculously too large. I read my phone about 5% of the time I'm carrying it. I spend more time taking it in and out of my pocket than I do anything else. So, for me, "comfortably-sized" means easy to carry.

Now that I think about it, I live in Seattle and usually wear a coat of some sort eight months out of the year, which has an inside breast pocket big enough to fit a Note (if I had one).  If I lived in TX or FL, I'd probably be more mindful about things fitting in pockets.

Still, we all have to make decisions about these things.  And, for some people, what the device can do is worth having to figure out how to carry it around.

Well for one (and I know this because I know people in their support), jailbreakers break their phones and then demand that Apple support them, fix their self-inflicted software issues, and/or replace their phones for specious reasons.

"So I changed the software on my phone and now it doesn't work the way it should.  I need you to fix it for me."

I think it has a lot to do with the size of the user too. I have a first gen Note. I have no problem fitting it comfortably in my pocket--except in lightweight dress pants. But I am 6'2. For shorter people, I could see the size being an issue.

/Still looks a little funny when I use it as an actual phone
