Why asinine, exactly?  Bars should be able to choose how late they stay open.

I live in New York City, where some bars do not close at all, so this is slightly amusing.

My hometown of Louisville has had a closing time of 4 am for as long as I can remember, and not many people make it to last call, by that point they've all gone to Dennys, Waffle House, or White Castle and continue the party there while they sober up.

In other words, treat people like grown-ups?

4am closing time is not a problem to me. The bigger cities such as Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Francisco should support this measure as they have great nightlife and adequate public transportation systems. California is doing a disservice to its residents by making their bars close at 2am.

I heard that in the UK they abolished closing time because if everyone trickles out when they're done drinking rather than leaving in a mass there are fewer fights in the streets afterwards.  Could be urban legend, though.

closing time has not been abolished. only bars that have "late night" licenses can stay open at all hours.

most bars in London close before 1am, as that is when the trains stop running.

makes sense.

The stupidest place has to be DC.  Last call is at 1:30, the Metro closes at 2, you have to be on your train by 1:30, no transfers, if you hope to get where you want to be.   It encourages drunk driving IMO, and the cabbies in downtown DC charge so much that it is cheaper to drive down, pay for parking, and then drive home drunk.

Stupid stupid farking system.   Whats even worse is that the DC Metro has a record number of riders yet they're losing money due to their incompetence.

Further, in places with the 2AM closing time a lot of places all but shutdown a little after 1:30 to make sure everyone is out by 2.

It used to be that pubs had to close at 11.  You get off of work at 5.  Decompress, shower, dinner, pregame.  At the club by 9, pound shots until 11 and stumble into the streets and fight over a taxi.  They then changed it to "24 hours".  People were up in arms like people were going to be drinking at all hours.  The reality was you still had to get permission from the township and most must pubs in towns and smaller cities kept the pubs open till around 12 or 1 and clubs stayed open till around 2.  People still crowd out at the same time and fight in the line at the kebab shop.

The only asinine thing is that the bars had to close a 2 AM in the first place. Chicago figured it out nicely. Yeah 4 AM (5 AM on/into satuday) is a good time, but you've gotta buy the "Special" license. Yeah that's the ticket.

2013-04-11 12:44:13 PM
I'm all for 24 bars or at least letting them and the neighborhood choose.

However I've stumbled out of a few bars in New Orleans at 6 or 7am thinking to myself "Oh shiat, I've really screwed this day up."

Chicago calls your drinking habits AMATEUR!
We've had 4AM bars forever...

Yeah when I drink in DC I keep an eye on the clock and usually it's at a bar near a metro stop. Pain in the butt.

For all the propaganda about drink driving, the government really loves more alcohol revenue better.

Some places have extended bar hours to 4am but still stop alcohol sales at 2am.
Some silly idea that people will stay for two hours drinking sodas and will gradually filter out onto the streets and get hit by a car being driven by a sober driver.
madd biatches will scream thats a driving/alcohol related death.

/32% of deaths from driving are drunk drivers.
//the rest are sober.
///your grandparents are so hopped up on pharmaceuticals, they don't even need alcohol.

I believe it.  In Chicago, most bars are forced to close at 2am.  And many are packed together in the same area.  Indeed, there is a mass exodus at 2am.  When I was there last, I didn't see any fights... but I bet they're common... because a lot of those kids could not handle their liquor at all.

You have to get a special late night operators license to stay open that late.

Hmmm.  Well, its been 6 years since I lived there, and rarely partied in Chicago proper.

I'm just basing this on one trip back to visit my sister.  Seemed like- and maybe it was just the area we were in- the sheer majority of bars closed at 2.

There was like one or two that had the 4am thing, and crowds of people were flocking to them at 2am.

Anyway- all of this is anecdotal.

So they're cutting our sober up time in half, from four to two hours? I'm not sure how well that will work.

Why should bars have to close at all? Just because this country was founded by puritans doesn't mean we have to preserve their boring way of life forever.

People binge-drink specifically because of 1:30 last call.

I'm hopeful it will change to 4:00 ... but not very optimistic.
