Queensowntalia: I've only ever heard about her because every time I turn on HLN, Nancy Grace seems to be going on extensively about the trial. She seems a little obsessed.

Regardless of the woman's guilt or innocence, harassing an expert like this is revolting. Huzzah for the internet's anonymity helping to unleash the true depths of humanity's innate incivility and cruelty, I suppose.

Yeah, and apparently people lap right up whatever gets shoved in their faces. Is the interest in the case just because no white girls have gone missing lately and ratings were slipping?

The Internet is Lord of the Flies, and I hope judges realize that before someone gets seriously hurt over it.

/I wouldn't even shed crocodile tears if Nancy Grace had the tables turned on her, though.

Yeah pretty girl is nutso and likes buttsex and gangbangs.  This has Nancy Grace gushing all over her panties right now.  And apparently all the housewives who have had empty existences since the Casey Anthony verdict.

So this is another one of those cases where the public thinks that the "truly" guilty shouldn't have lawyers.

So, I'm guessing the Travis Alexander lynch mob are a) emo mean girls who are mad that their fake boyfriend is dead. b) racists who don't like Arias because she's a Latina who killed her white boyfriend or c) trolls piling on because there's a hate pile just sitting there.

I just heard about this yesterday. It seems to be mainly Twitter-based. Which is a great reason to stay away right there.

What Nancy Grace deserves is to be falsely accused of murdering a child, and have the investigation drag on for 5-10 years. The fact nothing like that has or will happen to her exposes a serious flaw in belief in karma.

I think you hit the nail on the head with B).  It's not her changing her stories, calling his house after she killed him in order to feign ignorance about his death, or the defense characterizing the guy as a wife-beating double-secret-pederast using little more than her word.  It's because she's a Latina.  Boom, case closed, everyone go home.

She's a murderer who tried to set up alibis after the fact, or possibly she's a murderer who tried to set up alibis after the fact... but it's excused because she was a battered woman who finally struck back.  I don't see the term 'Latina' in either of those two descriptions.  In fact, I find it really strange you'd go to the Race pool before the Misogyny pool.

She's a psycho who stabbed, cut the throat, and shot in the head her ex boyfriend.

Then claimed it was self defense.

so, the problem is that she was very good at self defense... too good, perhaps... just put CSI on the case, it'll be solved in 42 minutes.

UNC_Samurai: I feel no pity for CNN. They dug their own hole, then decided the best way to get out of it was to hire Jeff Zucker.

Indeed, but this has been going on far longer than Zucker's presence at CNN and its affiliated outlets like HLN. The funny thing is, after this trial if there  aren't enough defamation suits flying at CNN Worldwide to reduce them to a financial cinder,  somebody somewhere done farked it way worse than CNN themselves did.

Seriously, the HLN coverage of this trial makes Sean Hannity look like Walter Cronkite. It's the single worst, most bilious, exemplar of the notion that for-profit journalism should be now and forever outlawed, I have ever seen on cable television, and I have seen a  lot of Fox News over the years. The sad thing is, I already know they're not merely trying to convict Arias in the court of public opinion, anyone who knows the remotest thing about criminal procedure and trials will readily admit the trial's blown, they're setting up their own audience to be outraged when the inevitable acquittal is being handed down to pull  more ratings in the long run.

The only people that know watch CNN, so we'll have to wait for the twenty or so lone souls to wander past this thread

The other media outlets covered it briefly, but I guess she wasn't hot enough to go on and on with it. She's no Casey Anthony.

HLN is completely obsessed with this trial.  I tried to watch the news the other morning and had to turn it off because they wouldn't stfu about Arias.

ransack.: Who is Jodi Arias?

She's the reason John Galt went AWOL.

Jodi Arias planned and carried out a murder. She killed her lover Travis Alexander when she conned him into posing for pictures as he was taking a shower after they had sex. She had stolen her grandfather's gun, and she also had a kitchen knife. When he was sitting on the floor of the shower as she was taking pictures, she began stabbing him. He fought back as best he could, getting many hand cuts as he fought her off. She stabbed him at one point directly in the chest, and he stood over the sink after fighting his way out of the shower, breathing and spraying blood over it. She saw he wasn't dying fast enough so she shot him in the forehead. It missed vital parts of the brain so he was able to run down the hall out of the bathroom before collapsing from the chest wound. She then lifted his head and slit his throat from ear to ear almost to the spine and let him bleed out. She then dragged his body back into the shower and made a completely inept attempt to clean up the crime scene. Then she drove away and threw the weapons she'd used into the desert where they have never been found.

She pretended she hadn't been in the state, and she had bought gas cans to use for part of the trip so no security cameras or credit card receipts for gas could place her in the state. However, her prints in blood were in the bathroom where Travis was found rotting in the June Arizona heat for five days, so she said two "ninjas," a man and woman, had killed Travis, and for some inexplicable reason let her go. Somehow, that story wasn't believed either, I can't imagine why, so then she said she killed him in self defense when he attacked her because she dropped his new $1500 dollar camera on the bathroom floor as she was taking the shower pictures.

Alyce LaViolette is testifying on behalf of Jodi's abuse defense as an expert on battered women, and she is doing a great job and I've not found anything she's said to be wrong or unbelieveable, until she starts talking about Jodi. Jodi may have been mistreated by Travis, especially emotionally, but that does not excuse what she did to him. The pre-planning aspect of the murder alone would make her guilty of capital murder.

All that said, this expert witness being trashed in the media and in social media is repugnant. She should not be subjected to having her career ruined because of this trial. No matter what you think of Jodi, and I think she is a self-absorbed, selfish, murdering biatch, LaViolette is none of those things and she should be left alone both during and after this trial. How much protection Arizona can provide for her is a big question, and I wonder what's going to happen to her after the trial is over, especially if Jodi doesn't get convicted of capital murder. Interesting that this female expert witness is being treated this way when the male expert witness on the stand before her was not...

/Travis was another Mitt Romney in the making, somewhat of a douchebag in a fake smile, glad handing, "I'm a Morman 'virgin' but I bang anything that moves in secret" kind of way, but he didn't deserve to be butchered, just basically slaughtered and left to rot

She is destroying her own credibility. The backlash on the internet is just a side-effect.

she *should*, that should say.

Jodi Arias, 32, admits killing Alexander, 30, but she claims she did so in self-defense. He was found in June 2008 in the shower of his Mesa home, with nearly 30 stab wounds, a bullet in the head and a slit throat.

So, her plea is "innocent by means of the bastard had it coming to him"?

silvervial: Jodi Arias planned and carried out a murder...

See, emotional appeals aside which is what these bloviating "accounts" of what happened are, the problem is the bar for conviction of a criminal act (especially capital offenses) is "beyond reasonable doubt".

Arias' counsel tried to plea down to second-degree murder, and Martinez refused thinking this was a first-degree murder conviction in the bag. The problem is, demonstrating a history of domestic abuse introduces reasonable doubt, since it renders as  plausible the defense's argument he attacked her and she snapped. First-degree murder must demonstrate beyond reasonable doubt  both willful intent  and premeditation, and acting in self-defense, regardless how disproportionate the act was, .is  not willful intent.

In short, Martinez farked it, big time, when he didn't take the plea bargain for second-degree murder. I'm fairly certain the jury won't convict, since there's reasonable doubt that Arias did not act with willful intent.

If he attacked her and she snapped, why did she have a knife and a gun with her in the bathroom?

Yup, and bought the gas cans so she would not have to buy gas in AZ.

And no, the witness does not deserve to have her career ruined. She's helped a lot of people. She's a compassionate and kind person who happens to have been taken in by a sociopath (Jodi). When this trial is over, hopefully she can go back to helping battered women.

Neither of you really get the "reasonable doubt" thing, in regards to establishing willful intent  and premeditation, do you. There must be  no alternative scenario, that would be regarded as plausible by a reasonable person, to her having gone there with the intent to kill him, planned  how she would kill him, and killed him in the way she had planned. If that is not the case, then she is not guilty of first-degree murder.
