(Denver Post)   Portland man arrested for harassing Aurora shooting survivors, using vile language and asking about the "moon base" where still-living "victims" were taken. He's also made friends in Newtown   (denverpost.com) divider line 180

He should be safe then. All the mass shooting gun crazies have been ON meds, which CAUSE homicidal and suicidal thoughts.

czei: Bullseyed: the lord god: RembrandtQEinstein: From the story: "None of the contacts were threatening but were unwanted and annoying and Purfield would often use vile language," according to the news release.

Does that mean I can have Jennifer from card member services arrested? Because those calls are unwanted and annoying and I consider marketing-speak to be vile language. Oh wait I'm not a politically sympathetic individual so the full weight of government won't come down on the people who annoy me.

The guy is an asshole but unless you want to live in Demolition Man then you need to agree that the government needs to draw a bright line between actions that cause HARM and actions that OFFEND.

Right. Because harassment is not a chargeable offense.

Calling someone on the telephone is not harassment.

How about calling 10 times?  Calling at 3AM?  Calling a hundred times?

Please link to a reputable source listing the dates and times he called.

Oh, you're making that up. Got it.

Booface1985: The idea is that once he has disarmed the populace, he can then turn the U.S. into a dictatorship and bring us under the fold of the New World Government, run by either the Bilderberg group or the Illuminati or some conflation thereof.

So he is not pro-gun, he is anti authority and possibly anti Obama specifically.

Thank you for making my point.

Worth noting that these EXACT SAME PEOPLE are the ones who believed Bush did 9/11 so he could pass the Patriot Act and put spy chips in their teeth.

They have issues with paranoia and authority.

Why would the number of times he called mattered?

You claimed harassment isn't 'a thing'.

It shouldn't matter if he called 1 or 1,000,000 times.

Kornchex: See now this is an example of a person who should lose their right to own guns.

Ignoring the oxymoronic phrase of "lose [...] right[s]" why not extend this further? Why not restrict the right to vote from these people too?

And if we're going to restrict the right to vote from people with mental defects, we might as well just make a law that says you must have a certain IQ to vote! Perhaps some kind of poll testing can be done...

See where this is going?

The My Little Pony Killer: The My Little Pony Killer: All it takes is for them to say "please stop calling me" (in any form, they don't need to be polite about it) and for him to keep doing it in order for it to turn into harassment.  This isn't some grade school "I'm not touching you" bullshiat, this is a full-grown man harassing the bajeezus out of people who very recently lost young children.  Use your brain.

And I'm not even going to touch your bullshiat victim-blaming crap.  It's not on them to never answer their own telephone, it's on the douchebag from the article to not act like a farking douchebag.

I guess a 10 second trip to their phone carrier's web site to block his number is too much effort.

I can only imagine when these people broke up with needy girlfriends or boyfriends in the past. They probably called the cops because they got a note passed to them in class saying "please take me back".

Because holding protest signs in public is not harassment.

Marshal805: Profedius: I have a problem with his actions, but I also have a problem with his arrest. As a nation we can not just allow people to be arrested for their speech no matter how offensive it is. Sending emails to the families of victims does not constitute stalking. This is a case where emotions have replaced the rule of law and that is a dangerous precedent to set.

Sending emails and making phone calls tells when the person receiving them tells you to stop is harassment. Harassment is against the law.

Farking A.  Did ANY of this guys defenders RTFA!?!?

So you can do so to cops, bill collectors, credit agents, etc, correct?

Just like the people who claim 9-11 was an inside job are taunting the victims families right? Should we arrest and execute the morons who made Loose Change?

Yes. Yes, we should.

And everyone who denies the Kennedy assassination/grassy knoll, the moon landing, etc?

Throw in the "Clinton Kill List" and the "Bush stole the Election/War For Oil" lunatics and you might be onto something here.

War for Oil? You're offering up Obama, Pelosi and Reid for jail time? Nice. I'll take it.

If the rhetoric from Facebook crazies is any indication, "vile" is an understatement.

Everything bad that happens is a government cover-up to (do whatever).

Alex Jones should be shot for riling up the easily lead and schizos on the internet.

Bullseyed: Wadded Beef: Bullseyed: Nina_Hartley's_Ass: Bullseyed: There is no evidence this guy is even pro-gun

The whole Aurora/Newtown conspiracy thing, even the milder forms("He didn't use the AR-15!") is exclusively brought up by GUN NUTS hoping to discredit or diminish calls for increased regulation.

No one else has a reason to buy into it.

You think conspiracy theorists have "reasons"? You obviously don't understand how conspiracy theories work.

Well, at least we can all agree that moments like this are the reason we need background checks to buy guns.

Depends on what you're looking for in a background check. People who have committed felonies shouldn't own guns, but that is already in place in any gun shop that is going to obey any new law anyway.

With this guy in particular... he probably isn't OK mentally, but he has no criminal history and no public medical records relating to mental defect, so explain what good a background check would do?

Like you said, to prevent those who do have criminal/mental defect histories from acquiring guns. This guy? no idea, but the logic of criminal background checks is still sound. I'm all ears if you have ideas that go beyond criminal checks.

Harassment is against the law. It has a legal definition. Go look it up. When you violate the law you face consequences.

You trying to equate what this guy did to ignoring bill collectors is at best painfully stupid and at worst a pathetic trollish cry for attention. I'm leaning towards it being a bit of both for you.

The man is a complete psycho looney. But in unrelated news, the conspiracy theory mongers of the GOP, Tea Party and American conservatives are catching up real fast.

Hey, forget about gun control to fight lunacy. Let's just mainstream lunacy and forget about gun control--FOREVER AND  ALWAYS!

Personally I have a suspicion that loonies are encouraged by being fed support for their delusions by the media and a larger society. The GOP and other Movementaryans might want to dial it back a bit. You're only hurting yourselves. Black people don't seem to buy into these particular brands of insanity. Liberals are quite capable of manufacturing their own conspiracy theories, thank you, and don't need to borrow from the Right (although the real Left and Right meet in conspiracy theories much more often than they meet in the moderate middle on the other side of the political circle).

Repeatedly calling someone after they've asked you to leave them the fark alone is harassment. It isn't covered by free speech.

To put it another way, you can stand in the town green and tell me the shooting was a conspiracy all you want.

But you can't follow me home and continue to bother me in my living room.

This is the type of person that Gun Nuts feel should own a gun.

How about no? I'm a gun owner, and with the exception of people erroneously classified as being unfit to own guns, along with a procedure to deal with that, I think nutjobs should NOT be able to own guns.

Don't classify all gun nuts with that brush.

Maybe you shouldn't call yourself a "gun nut", perhaps your are a "weapon fancier" or "murder enthusiast"?
