RembrandtQEinstein: From the story: "None of the contacts were threatening but were unwanted and annoying and Purfield would often use vile language," according to the news release.

Does that mean I can have Jennifer from card member services arrested? Because those calls are unwanted and annoying and I consider marketing-speak to be vile language. Oh wait I'm not a politically sympathetic individual so the full weight of government won't come down on the people who annoy me.

The guy is an asshole but unless you want to live in Demolition Man then you need to agree that the government needs to draw a bright line between actions that cause HARM and actions that OFFEND.

Yeah, actually, you can have Jennifer arrested (or least get her company jacked up on civil charges). Free speech isn't unlimited; there are rules for things like broadcasting or making phone calls that are different from standing on a street corner talking.

Just like the people who claim 9-11 was an inside job are taunting the victims families right? Should we arrest and execute the morons who made Loose Change?

I've never seen Loose Change, but does it actually accuse the victims of being part of the conspiracy, and that they're not really dead?  Does it accuse the next-of-kin of being part of the cover-up?

/Serious question, I've never seen it, and have no desire to.

I haven't really seen it either. People are entitled to their opinions, freedom of speech and freedom of thought. Thought policing people for believing in government conspiracies is not part of a free, ethical or moral society.

It is however part of a communist/socialist/dictatorship. Just like the Nazi/Soviets/Maoists/etc

Right. Because harassment is not a chargeable offense.

Calling someone on the telephone is not harassment.

If what he says to them on the phone is so harassing, why did they answer the phone to begin with? Why not hang up? Maybe the victims families should be arrested for enabling harassment by not hanging up the phone when he calls.

Police in Portland, Ore., have arrested a man suspected of making harassing phone calls and sending upsetting e-mails to the families of those killed in the Aurora theater shooting.

I'd say it was because he was doing things that were already considered illegal to begin with.

Would rather we arrest people who complain about this sort of thing. The first time he calls, you block his number via your phone carrier. Problem solved.

But WAAAAAAHHHH I'm so helpless the government has to do it for meeeeeee. I can't handle calling the phone company?!?!? Instead we must pay for him to be in jail and give him free food and tv and heat and shelter. WAAAAHHHH.

Not really, no.

There is a difference between calling someone repeatedly, and posting online.

My posting my disagrements does not prevent other people from posting (tying up your phone line). It does not force you to not-use your computer to get away from the noise (If he's calling them repeatedly, the only way to get the phone to stop ringing/interrupting their lives would be unplug the phone).

Posting online is, really, kind of fundamentally different from calling someone on the phone.

Now, if I dig up your email or IM name, and constantly bombarded you with how you suck and are an idiot, followed you to every messaging service you used, flooded your inbox?

Or, if, say, I tracked down your real name and address, and started posting it in these threads going "LOL, this is where that dumbass lives, this is what he does! Let's call his boss and show them he doesn't think harassment is real!" (Note: I have no intention of doing this. This is not a threat. It is an example. I likely lack the skills to do so anyways)

THAT would be the internet analogue of harassment. Not disagreeing with you in my post. Going out to intrude in your life, constantly dogging your steps-THAT'S harassment.

Of course, you don't really believe harassment is a 'thing', so I can understand why this must be a difficult concept for you to grasp.

I'm kinda worried the really crazy ones will move down I-5 to where I live in Eugene.

We don't fluoridate here (yet... that will be a fun fight), but that doesn't stop a segment of the population from thinking we do it secretly and they take measures to protect from and "cure" themselves of fluoride poisoning.
