Now teetotal for ten months she has returned to university and has found love with boyfriend Matthew, 26, an IT technician, who she met online.

And right on cue, the code monkey comes in to pay for what everyone else had for the price of a bottle of vodka.

Uchiha_Cycliste: Just 2 liters alone, that's about 60 ounces, or 40 shots "drinks". If we give her 120 lbs, that's a bac of 1.24!

You have to divide by the time it took her to drink it. Say 16 hours, and you get .08. You can drive when you're that drunk.

Also, just take a look at dear old mum to see what you'd be getting in about 25 years.

Uchiha_Cycliste: FTFA: "These daily binges included two litres of vodka, a bottle of wine, a litre of cider and six cans of lager."
Holy crap! Even I can't drink that much... at best I can (used to be able to) drink a fifth of rum of bourbon in a couple hours, or a handle of Jack over two days. that's incredible.

\or bullshiat.

Yeah, that's more than I thought the body could tolerate.  The normal standard is the liver metabolizes 1 drink/hour.  That's well over that amount.

antidisestablishmentarianism: People who drink regularly need to drink more than light drinkers or non-drinkers to get the same effects because their bodies adapt to deal with alcohol. If she'd been a heavy drinker since 15 she must have built up one hell of a tolerance. I'm not saying she didn't inflate the quantities but I don't think she is exaggerating that much. If anything I think she is inflating the vodak claim or it was some weak-ass stuff.

Tolerance to higher levels of intoxication, yes, but does the body's ability to metabolize it also speed up?

Uchiha_Cycliste: Well 2 liters of vodka, plus a bottle of wine and a liter of cider and 6 lagers. I'd say that's approx another liter of vodka (hence the initial guesstimate of approx 3 liters). I've drunken a fifth of makers in a day too. But I'm damn sure two handles of Makers mark would be fatal. I guess my initial point was (as we discussed) her list of what she drank must be inflated, otherwise I don't see how she'd survive, much less to do that every day. 8 hours of sleep surely isn't enough to bring her BAC back to zero, so if she did that every day she'd be ratcheting up her BAC higher and higher. 8 hours should only be enough time to rid her body of less than a half liter of vodka.

The previously linked Wikipedia article says the eliminate rate in some people is 3x normal.  That would have put her at the edge of being able to survive it.

JavaGuy: syrynxx: Uchiha_Cycliste: Well 2 liters of vodka, plus a bottle of wine and a liter of cider and 6 lagers. I'd say that's approx another liter of vodka (hence the initial guesstimate of approx 3 liters).

They're Imperial liters which are much smaller than the American liter.

Nope.

American Liter == 16 fl oz.
Imperial Liter == 20 fl oz.

That's a American pint, not a liter.  The only liter I'm aware of is metric and is ~33oz.

Both of these. I'd have to work pretty hard to finish half a handle of vodka in one go, and that's less than a liter. I don't see any way that someone who looks like they weigh about half what I do doubling that.

Wtf is a handle? That's as confusing as a unit.

NobleHam: How could you possibly drink that much without getting fat?

Most severe alcoholics are very malnourished. Most of their calories for the day come from the alcohol with minimal fat and protein intake. You wind up with vitamin deficiencies (See Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome) that play havoc on your body.

Sorry, I really don't know what else to call it. It's like a double fifth. Though it's commonly more than that. My vodka "handles" are 1.75 liters and it usually takes me 3-4 sessions to polish one off. And that's without drinking anything else alcoholic with it.

Wow, that's a big bottle. I'm not sure how many ml are in what we call a 40, but i think it's closer to 1.25 L than 1.75L. The texas mickeys are the ones that you often have to have a pump on, or have it on a stand that tilts so you can pour it. I'm guessing those are close to 3L, maybe 4.

I divided by 16, because I'm drunk. I'm calling bullshiat on this. Anything over .5 is death by alcohol poisoning, and if a 100-pound girl drank two liters of booze, she'd be about 1.5 (and still at 1.25 16 hours later).

Beer isn't sold in handles. Liquor is. 1.75L is my standard purchase for liquor. Costs about $35-$40 for JD or Bombay Sapphire. A fifth is one-fifth of a U.S. gallon (25.6 fluid ounces), and since liquor bottles were standardized at 750 ml, it's more a nickname than an accurate description. A real old-timey, pre-metric fifth would be 757 ml, and a 12-ounce can (which is actually 350 ml these days) would be 354 ml.

That's weird that they would call a 750 ml a quart. An Imperial quart is 1.13 liters, and an American quart is 946 ml. A 40 is almost exactly an Imperial quart (1.18 liters). I'm assuming your pints are 20-ounce Imperial pints and not 16-ounce American ones; either way, you're getting ripped off on your quarts.
