ha-ha-guy: Some dipshiat sovereign citizen type that jumped the firefighters because they were "government agents" and came onto his property?

I should mention, USA Today says the house this guy was in was a bank owned repo.  Could just be a guy who got screwed out of his house, but could also be sovereign citizens or someone's grow op.

/although I'm not sure why grow op people would call 911

I've been in Atlanta for work every week for the past month.

That's because if God wanted that guy to have money, He would have made him the owner of a bank, not a poor guy who lost his home. The people who have money only have it because God wants it. He looks into our souls and gives us the lives we deserve.

/some people actually believe this

Spray and pray on the floor that houses the executives of BoA or Countrywide is one side, firefighter hostages is a whole different game.  What's the worst firefighters do?  Screw hookers while on the clock due to boredom?

/well aside from those who get into arson because they're bored
//really we should build all fire stations next to a strip club and thus reduce the odds arson happens

I just heard a woman say 'we reported the foreclosure already.' Sounds like another greedy bank trying to kick someone out of their home. The firefighters tried to lie to him, tell him his house was on fire. The owner said 'Na-uh!'

They picked a house that belonged to an armed Murican!

No I'm not going to blame the f*cking bank, you idiot. Sure, it's possible (even likely) this guy's beef has to do with the foreclosure of his home but the bank did not take any hostages. He did.

Regardless of what drove him to them, his actions are his own. Hell, we don't even know why the bank foreclosed on him. You know sometimes they do that because you didn't pay for your f*cking house, not just out of spite or because they had the wrong lot number on some forms.

I do have to say, I wish the media would tape delay this stuff a bit.  For all we know this guy is in the McMansion jerking off to the fact he's finally getting attention for the first time in his miserable life.  There is really no reason I need to see reporters asking questions the cops can't answer due to OPSEC or the fact they just don't know the answer.

I think there are lots of places like that, however most of the time a police unit responds as well in case crowd control or anything is needed.  The plus just happen to get there first normally since you have more police cruisers and thus better odds of a police cruiser being closer than an ambulance.

The agency I volunteer for is probably the oddest. Police always respond to EMS calls because each ambulance is staffed by 1 medic, so when it comes time to transport the officer has to drive the ambulance.

This agency covers an area which has over a million people, too.

From The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Link

Firefighters responded to a medical call at the home and shortly after arrival, around 3:10 p.m., they were taken hostage
A Gwinnett County Sheriff's deputy at the scene said that the gunman had faked a heart attack to elicit fire department response, and that he was upset because his house was being foreclosed upon.

WTF

Awesome T-Shirt: The agency I volunteer for is probably the oddest. Police always respond to EMS calls because each ambulance is staffed by 1 medic, so when it comes time to transport the officer has to drive the ambulance.

So what you're saying is I whack some old lady on the back of the head, call 911, act like I'm a good citizen calling in a woman having a heart attack, and wait for my free unattended police cruiser to appear?

That show isnt real.  You're watching actors working from a script.

I thought so too; but, then they'd have to have a ridiculously high location budget. I'd like to think people aren't that dumb; but, people constantly prove that assumption wrong.

Thisbymaster: A Shambling Mound: Thisbymaster: I bet he was the former owner of the house.  But no one is going to blame the banks, nope not one person.

Do you remember to big to fail?  The banks took the whole USA hostage, all of it.  And no one even went to jail.

Which has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with this guy taking a bunch of firefighters hostage. You're tilting at windmills and if we're assuming the foreclosure is a point of contention here, so is he.

Depends on the agency. Some cars are doubled up depending on how bad the area is, but most ride solo.

I was figuring the place that is so broke they can't field ambulance drivers, likely can't afford to field police in pairs.  One of the first things broke departments seem to do is send people out solo since it halves the payroll costs.

They have those records. Some places; police officers can act as process servers, so they put up notices of intent and whatnot. The fire departments tend to use the same database that the police use, so they'd see it was an foreclosed home.

Talk to firefighters; they see some shiat. I know a guy that had to break into a window to do a check on a person. He was lucky he couldn't get the door opened; as it was boobie trapped. The guy had constructed a Rambo-esk man trap.

If only he had to undergo 2 cat scans, multiple psychological exams,$50/year licensing, fingerprinting, purchase a drill proof, fire proof safe, undergo police academy training, be embedded with the Army for 6 months, get written references from 15 neighbors, and fill out a 20 page life history dossier, none of those would have happened.

You'll find throughout most of the country, even in some metro areas that police officers often ride solo. Only in big cities or high crime areas are they usually doubled up.

In this day and age, everybody's spouse and children seem to be at risk of becoming victims of a deranged person 24/7.

Three weeks ago a young girl was shot in the leg with an arrow on the exact play structure my daughter had been playing on only a few days before.

Two days later I was out having dinner with my family when cops pulled over a car across the street, and suddenly they all had their guns drawn because the passanger hand apparently brandished a handgun.

I never imagined myself hiding between parked cars, holding my 2-year-old daugther and trying to pretend we were just playing a game.

That was wrapped up quickly. Sorry to see the guy go... but... well... that's what happens when you take public servants hostage.

Yeah. The suspect sounded desperate. I'm sure he knew it would end this way...

According to the debriefing - an officer was injured by cross fire.
A firefighter was injured by the flash bomb used to gain entry to the home.

The debriefing was weird - the guy would speak and then wanted to walk back on what he said when the reporters were pressing for more info.

Yeah - from what I could gather - the injuries weren't life-threatening. He thought one officer was shot in either the hand or the shoulder and the firefighter had minor wounds from the flash bomb. The remaining officers were being treated for the superficial wounds from the flash bomb, too (but at the scene).

So maybe some debris or minor burns sustained by the firefighter?

Ahh, okay. Makes sense, thanks.

On the other hand, it might be more cost-effective to send a pair of officers in the event of an ambulance run, than to abandon a car somewhere, to be picked up later (which would also require two drivers, one of whom would drop the other off at the scene.)

It makes sense that we're looking at passing more federal gun control, supposedly increased background checks, etc. -- because if we had only done that then maybe Adam Lanza wouldn't have been able to take firearms from someone who could pass one of these background checks.

Right?  That makes perfect sense.  Thats the solution!

England is a perfect example of how Gun Control prevents people from being killed:

So, maybe we have a cultural difference and should look closer to the United States.   Such as Chicago, President Obama's home:

Number of people shot in Chicago in 2011:  2,217
Number of people shot in Chicago in 2012:  2,670
Number of people shot in Chicago as of March 25th, 2013:   369

The point is that our non-firearm homicide rate is higher than most countries total homicide rate.  The US is a violent country with and without guns, ie., the issue goes far beyond guns.

Some gun control happy countries have moderate to high non-firearm violence and/or murder rates.

why do i say that?

brazil has 3 times the gun murders as the US every year.

and they have strict gun ownership restrictions and fees (less than 1.5m licensed owners)

most of the guns are owned by criminals. law abiding citizens are helpless to defend themselves, against criminals or corrupt government.

If the charts were compared with one another, your objection would be meaningful. However, as each chart was intended to illustrate the apparent impact of the imposition of a firearm regulation, and not intended to compare data common to both charts, you are objecting to irrelevant information.

And that our homicide rate is more than 10 times theirs? A good bit of that is cultural difference, but the rest is the availability of guns.

United Kingdom homicide rate per 100,000 inhabitants: 1.2.

1.2 per 100,000 * 10 = 12 per 100,000.

United States homicide rate per 100,000 inhabitants: 4.8.

4.8 (United States homicide rate per 100,000)
You may wish to re-examine your premises, though I suspect that you will not do so.

my point is, legal availability to guns is not the biggest factor in the numbers.
there are far more legally owned guns in the US.
mostly criminals in brazil own guns, so the criminals are free to kill without fear of a homeowner defending himself.

Dude, re-read my statement. Just because ONE country has more gun violence than the US does not mean that the US has less gun violence than MOST countries. Especially ones that have comparable economies and levels of industrialization. This should not be a difficult concept. Just because you've managed to provide one example does not mean that I'm wrong.
