WhoopAssWayne: FARK rebel soldier:  Do not want.

The weird thing is that he looks *exactly* like the dude I bought a mattress from yesterday - I keed you not.

A foam mattress?

Gyrfalcon: bextraordinary: Treygreen13: bextraordinary: Ugh, shocked this made Fark. This is my friend's dad. :/ Seriously, mental health? Not a damn joke. We need to do better.

Who is "we" and what would you have done differently in this situation?

We, as a country. The guy had a documented history of mental illness AND a documented history of domestic violence, and yet still managed to get a gun and put multiple lives at risk. It's unacceptable to me. As a country, we need to take a long, hard look at the failure of our mental health system AND our failure to enforce existing gun control laws.

But THE SECOND AMENDMENT says we don't have to. Because that means that only criminals would have gunz.

Ah yes, every argument must go to its illogical conclusion.

CruiserTwelve: BarkingUnicorn: hard to parse this cop-speak:

"The decision was made to deploy the Bearcat and establish an entry into the home through the garage," Arnold explained. "This caused Mr. Cowger to finally to begin communicating with our negotiators."

"They drove an armored car through his garage door which scared the shiat out of him and he started talking to the cops."

OOOOhhhh ... THAT kind of Bearcat. I was picturing this kind:

I still say mine would've been cooler.

It's going to go there anyway, I figured I'd just cut to the chase.

I want the Mass Effect "N7"-styled painted version someone made of that for shooting people at the office.  We have Nerf wars sometimes.

Mega Steve: If you want to die that bad, just shoot yourself. Don't lay it off on someone else.

Step 1: Buy Gun
Step 2:Rent boat
Step 3: Get some drugs and booze.
Step 4: Go out in the middle of nowhere on your boat, drink, smoke, shoot up or whatever
Step 5: If you didn't enjoy your trip enough to justify living till you can do it again, shoot yourself as you sit with your back to the water.  Fall in and die.

Pros:
No chance of accidentally living and being all farked up with a hole in your head.
Last chance to survival - if you can't enjoy a peaceful artificial happiness on the water when you have zero cares because the plan is suicide, then, well, suicide is probably the answer.
Doesn't hurt anyone else.
If you do it right, you get eaten by sharks and you don't even leave a clean up for others.
Hell, you can anchor the boat and call who you rented it from that it is waiting for them - minor inconvenience really.

Cons: doesn't work for hydrophobes and people with sea-sickness

It would be easier if all police were corrupt and evil.

Instead you sometimes see good apples doing the right thing described here, including not necessarily piling on charges just because, and saving people's lives through what looks like the proper use of force.  Bonus points for using newer technology correctly.

Then you have cops in LA shooting at random targets in blue pickups because they are 'tense'.

Might I suggest a short vacation from FARK, then? Perhaps to another thread? Things are going to get ugly in here fast.

brandent: Generally I think the SWAT people are way better than regular cops.

The best response to that is that "it depends." In a COALEA accredited department which holds itsself up to a high standard, you are expected to see the cream of the crop, ex-military able to drill a hole in a board from 75 feet with an iron sighted 1911 type guy.

In a rural department, you might find JoeBob who ordered a patch off of EBAY that says SWAT and sewed it on his uniform (I'm not even joking)

CALEA is a waste of money and is only meant to employ retired admin types.

^^^^^^

I've known a few SWAT wannabes that couldn't even pass a DPD shooting course that were on rural County SWAT teams or SRTs. If you ever get into a hostage situation, pray to god it's in a major and liberal city. Or you might as well figure you're dead, fight the fark back.

brandent: Ni: In my city they would've driven a tank into the building, shot the man a few times, found his dog and shot that, then charged his wife, impounded his vehicles, and lit the house on fire.

Generally I think the SWAT people are way better than regular cops.

They're better trained, and prepared to handle this kind of situation.

pjbreeze: How does throwing a suicidal person in jail make them less suicidal?

Do you suggest letting the six counts of reckless endangerment just slide?

StoPPeRmobile: Well we are going to need a way to safely round up all the Gen-Xers when they start realizing how farked they are.

LOLWUT?

I'd be impressed if even 1 out of every 5 SWAT or SRT departments outside of the Federal Branch Offices in this country had a budget that covered enough specialized training for their officers. At best they get some more range time and MAYBE get to run some drills at a muni building with some of the senior ex military guys. At best.

It takes a massive budget to provide the constant training needed to maintain even a half assed team, let alone a good one. Most LEO agencies and departments in this country simply do not have the budget.

Like I said, hope to god if you have to have a sniper taking out the guy with a pistol to your head that you're in a major and at least somewhat liberal city or one of its suburbs. Otherwise you're just as likely to be shot by the sniper as the hostage taker.

Awesome T-Shirt: CALEA is a waste of money and is only meant to employ retired admin types.

Funny how those departments tend to have less problems with the public than non CoALEA departments, isn't it?

It's almost as if holding ones self up to a higher standard tends to mean you attract better candidates and people to the job.

For all it's stupidity, NYPD has a supurb SRT - NYPD Rescue. Not only are they SWAT, but also Paramedics, Firefighters, and Rescue Technicians.

Our guys in Shelby County are pretty good, but they tend to go less up against crazies, and more up against bangers with the firepower of a third world nation.

I know this is unlikely to get a response from you, but meh.

CALEA, with no o, has the Seattle Police Department as one of the departments accredited by them. You want to talk about an agency with problems?

Second of all, NYPD ESU personnel are not firefighters and most of them aren't paramedics either.
