Ugh. Yeah, the football coaches in my HS were always the biggest dicks. They all taught PE.  Especially since I was an anti-social, nerdy, skinny dude that was bad at everything but basketball.

/Because I was tall, not athletic.

I played four years of varsity high school football in Oklahoma and had coaches that would question your lineage, shove you around in practice, and call you names that would make a Marine drill instructor blush, but they never took a swing at us, much less knocked us out cold from behind.

The PE teacher/coach at the high school I attended was a huge asshole, but I never heard of him striking a student. Yell and scream at them, yes, but not quite at the level of a Marine DI. Of course this was in a small town and he would have been fired for using strong language. Can't imagine what would have happened if he struck a student.

The fact that it has taken nearly a year for this to come out is just twisted

I wouldn't even call my high school coaches, in retrospect, assholes.  They were tough bastards from another time, but they only criticized you on your performance, not anything personal.   I hold them all in this day to high respect, even though they were tough as hell in a way that would probably get them fired today.    Their verbal abuse wasn't about breaking you down like the military, it was about making you work harder as an individual, and that ended up teaching me an incredible amount about what I was capable of accomplishing.  It hurt at the time and I wanted to tell them to f*ck off, but ultimately I respected them for the way they pushed me.

There is nothing like that in this story.

I live in NorCal and word is that those Oregon football camps are HARD CORE. Because they are done out of state and outside the jurisdiction of the National Federation of High School Athletics, coaches can get away with just about anything they want with respect to training. I think some of the coaches do it right, but some of them do it oh so wrong.

In order to graduate and complete my teaching license requirements I had to observe/teach at a school for a few weeks. I soon realized that one of these students of mine was also a student that I was teaching kickboxing to.

So I taught him history in the day and taught him how to fight at night. I sparred with him once or twice during the same period I was teaching him, but as always due to his age and experience the worst thing he ever got was a slap with the back of my (gloved) hand.

Still is a fun story to tell other teachers :P "I've hit my students legally"

It was on YouTube, placed there by the father, but got pulled due to their "ant-bullying' policy..  The father was making statements in the comments of the local paper, but has since been advised by his attorney to keep quiet.

I remember that fateful day when Coach took me aside. I knew what was coming. "You don't have to tell me," I said. "I'm off the team, aren't I?" "Well," said Coach, "you were never were really ON the team. You made that uniform you're wearing out of rags and towels, and your helmet is a toy space helmet. You show up at practice and then either steal the ball and make us chase you to get it back or you try to tackle people at inappropriate times." It was all true what he was saying. And yet, I thought something is brewing inside the head of this Coach. He sees something in me, some kind of raw talent that he can mold. But that's when i felt the handcuffs go on.
