You can forget about anything any President says in his State of the Union address. It's more a wish list/pep rally for the country than actual things that will happen.

It's safe to say that if Barack Obama has not implemented all of his agenda items by now, a full two months after his State of the Union address, he will never implement them. He's basically a lame duck president from this point on and all anybody will care about within the coming days is the upcoming presidential election. Way to blow your window of opportunity, Barry.

First he has to ram a new constitutional amendment down the GOP's throat until they swallow it.

Jesus, when I was president I was able to institute minimum wage increases and fix the climate in 6 weeks.  What is this guy's farking problem?

2013-04-10 02:35:21 PM
Judy Conti of the National Employment Law Project told Salon the barriers are especially high because Republican opposition to a minimum wage hike has never been greater. "It's absolute universal, uniform opposition by every Republican," she said.

This is such crap. If he can raise the price of gas to $4/gallon then he can raise the minimum wage.

There was never a chance of anything from Obama's agenda passing. Ever. Except maybe slashing Social Security and that's only if Republicans can quench their hatred of Obama for 15 minutes to vote Aye so they can run against the Obama Social Security cuts in 2014.

sure, he's a corporate centrist but after the '14 elections he'll be more interested in 'legacy' than anything. probably try to try the old israeli-palestine-can't we just all get along schtick. i'm still hoping for normalization with cuba. and end the war on drugs, barry, as an expensive boondoggle. you know it's what's right, man

Well, when he was elected, it was the day that the planet began to heal and the seas began to recede.  You'd think 4 years and 4 months later he'd at least be able to show SOME progress.  Thanks a lot Obama.

serial_crusher: This is not a repeat from Obama's first term...

This is totally a repeat from Obama's first term. The exact same complaints were made exactly the same amount of time after his inauguration. "Obama hasn't done any of the things he promised! Waah! He's an empty suit!" Cut the guy some slack, he has to simultaneously shepherd his policies through the legislative process and deal with the back-stabbing traitors of the repub Party.

Hey, remember when George Bush promised us we were sending astronauts to Mars and he totally followed through on that promise?  That was awesome.

2013-04-10 02:54:22 PM
Even if Obama can do certain things with pure executive power, why do them do early and risk destroying any remote possibility of working with the Republicans in Congress?  Or well to more specifically risk alienating moderate Republicans who might break with Boehner and help the Dems get a bill through Congress (see the tax hikes)?  No sense in pissing them off until it is clear you can't win them no matter what.  Obama can afford to wait until 2014 on some issues when the midterm election plays out.

Obama has done a good job of picking which agenda items to let the Republicans filibuster.  The gun control debate seems to be a good choice to run against the Republicans in 2014.

I wish the SoTU would go back to being a letter with a breakdown of the, you know, state of the union.  Instead we get this, "Hey, I'm the temporary King Guy sitting in the White House, and you know, over the past 60 years or so that has meant I and only I get to decide what policies the US should pursue, and you, Congress get to decide whether to look foolish or not. So, uh, look I brought guests up there on the balcony."

You mean the announcement in 2004 about the 10 year goal?

He was criticized for that. (Hint. He wasn't in office for the last 4 years and it isn't 2014)

But of course 0bama said the same thing in 2010 and he was praised.

What I should have seen is happy republicans and pissed of democrats.

"Obama is destroying our country with his policies" "Obama is a lame duck and can't do anything"  Which is it?

But by all means run on that in 2014. God knows you can't run on the economy or jobs.

Don't you really mean great at appearing to be terrible at governing?  I mean, with his dastardly effective implementation of his secret America-destroying plan while giving the outward appearance of an empty-suit buffoon... Gutting Medicare is partly necessary to make Obamacare work.  Which, frankly, why not just have one, instead of many, government plans for insurance as the public option?  Why Medicare for some, Medicaid for others, tiny American flags for still others...

I think the main issue is that we are so polarized that without a president, our political system is in a perpetual tie.  Neither side can beat the other on any single issue.  But the president is the emotional tie breaker.  During the W years, he was hated by the left.  During the O years, he is hated by the right.  But its not because he's black.

I do agree that the procedural blocks are increasing but they would be just as bad if it were Hillary or Biden as president.
